Hi all - so I have a 1996 A4 1.8 (B2 saloon body) & she has now decided to leave her Airbag warning light on after start up. I've replaced her clock spring (breaker's yard situation as FAR too expensive new!) but she still won't turn the lamp off after start up. Any other suggestions from anyone as to what might be causing this ?
Thanks !

I agree will most likely be plug contacts under passenger seat, did it on my 2000 4 1.8tqs,needed contacts sorting to fix.

unlikely to have seat airbags in a '96,

however the airbag faults latch on and require diagnostics to clear them, so even if you'd fixed the fault with a new clock spring, it wont go away until you actually reset the system.

You can buy cheap reset tools on eBay for like £15 plug it in and push a button

I've got the same problem but with my 1998 2.4. Trouble is, I bought a obd2 scanner in order to reset the code, but after plugging in the scanner, it won't connect to the car. Any suggestions to what scanner i.e. something earlier than OBD 11 that will connect?

Can’t Vag-com work on a 96? Worth a try...if it does then worth the £100 to clear the codes and much more besides.

Some of the launch tools are good. I’ve got the EasyDiag for iPhone. You can buy the Audi software for one year for 24 quid. Or I’ve got the launch CRP129 which scans engine, auto-box,abs and airbag for all makes and models. It’s easier to plug in and see what the issue is. The older launch stuff is good too like the Creader. It’s old school and just flashes a number and you have to look the code up in a book. Or you can get a cheap Delphi diagnostic tool off eBay. Pain in the **** to setup. Best option is vcds.

You can check the If any members are near you with VCDS sitemap thingy. There’s bound to be a nice person who would check it out in exchange for a couple o beers.

And obd2 scanner won’t work, obd2 only covers Engine management. Need a specific tool for SRS.

My 99 S4 had airbag light on, no comms via racscan. Lost a 12v feed. Eventually traced the fault to swollen wire under the passenger carpet. Was a bit wet. Leak from door loom seal. So fault can be anywhere.

It should work then. First thing I would do is to disconnect abs multi plug and try it again. Does it connect with the other control units?

most likely a can-bus only tool, you need a scanner that works on k-line

Not sure where the abs multiplig is. It doesn't connect with any control units. When you plug it in, it powers up, that is, the unit turns on, allowing you to choose language, metric, etc, then says waiting for vehicle, then gives message saying not connected to vehicle.

As I stated it's most likely not compatible with your car! The A4 B5 is diagnostic via k-line, were most cars these days are diagnostic via can-bus, and use a can gateway.
