One of my electric wing mirrors on my A3 has just stopped opening for some reason; it doesn’t appear to have been hit or knocked, and I just wondered if anyone has any ideas/advice/experience of things I can try to get it working again? I don’t think I should force it but I use my mirrors a lot so it’s quite inconvenient!

I tried the electric button/knob in the car to open and close the mirrors but only one works and the passenger mirror stays closed. I also tried turning the engine on and off but still no joy.

Please help!! Thank you in advance

Not only inconvenient, it’s illegal because wing mirrors are a legal requirement.
So does need fixing asap.

Door mirrors.. they are door mirrors, mirrors haven't been mounted to the wings for years. :friendly wink:

It should just open out with a bit of force, you won't break it as it's on a motor anyway so its designed to move in and out, that said it's nackered anyway so best to be able to use both mirrors than only one.

My door/wing mirror got hit by a seagull a few months back when driving on a bridge and my mirror was smashed in towards the window. No damage was done! I just pulled it out and it have workes perfectly ever since.

Give it a push and see if it starts working again.

According to the handbook you should not try to move folding mirrors manually. The fault might be a simple electrical problem, and you could do serious = expensive damage by forcing the mirror. Much As I hate to say it, I think a trip to the dealer is required.

Hiya, I tried giving a push, and although it was firmly closed it did open, and moves freely now....however unfortunately the mirror still does not open or close electronically. It doesn't even sound like it wants to , because usually I hear a whirring sound but there's no noise coming from the passenger mirror at all which makes me think there is no power getting to that part (the driver side works just fine). When using the control switches from inside the car door, I can still move the glass itself electronically (up, down, left and right), it's the actual door mirror that doesn't now work :-(

Thanks for the info but I'm afraid it's too late as I've moved it manually now - I was advised this would be OK to do so hopefully I haven't caused more damage by doing so :-(

My drivers one does not fold out when the weather is cold.
As they can't see the fault in their warm workshop they are refusing to fix it even though I have video evidence and it happened to a staff member when bringing my car round after a service.
Audi UK also say tough, pretty poor customer service.

Sorry to hear that, that sounds really unfair on you. I'm surprised at Audi.....I'm guessing your car is a fairly new car . Keep on at them and don't give up they might get bored and relent eventually! Good luck :)

It is ok to move them manually. Sometimes you have to do an open and close again for the motor to engage again. Sounds to me like a faulty motor it’s pretty rare to have a wiring problem unless it’s in the mirror or door itself. Mirror plugs right into the door module so if that was bad there would be a lot of other things not working.

Thanks for the info. Everything else seems to be working so I suspect you are right and I will need to buy a new motor (if possible)?

I’m not sure you can replace just the motor. As only striped mine down as far as the lower housing all the wires are sealed and wired into the connector so best bet is just another lower housing with motor.
