I don't know if/when my car has had its DSG oil changed, so I'm looking to do it ASAP. I called a couple of indie garages, and one of them asked whether I wanted just the DSG oil changed, or the gearbox oil too.

So what's the difference, and does the gearbox oil need to be changed? As I understand it, DSG oil needs to be changed every 40k miles, but what aboout gearbox oil? And am I likely to notice any difference if it's done?

They may be confusing it with Haldex, so best to confirm with them.
VAG group have different terminology to most other manufacturers, so it's easy to mean one thing and say another.

Unless they mean the gear lever mechanism? They're a VAG specialist, so should know what they're talking about!

The other place quoted £180. Does that seem reasonable? Unless anyone can recommend somewhere in particular in North London?

Which engine?

Gearbox oil generally would include or be dsg oil.

For something crucial like DSG oil change I’d go straight to Audi or VW.

Audi will charge £230 and VW maybe 10/20 less.

As you are in N London, AMD are at West Thurrock round the M25. They are an all round VAG specialist. They also run a BTTC touring car so know they are screwed together.
If yer car has done big mileage, best to have the DSG, Haldex & Diff oils changed together.
