Hello,

I am a beginner in the world of Audi, i had a BMW, i have today an Audi A3 8P SportBack TDI 2.0l of 2009.

I search a diagnostic tool, i saw that there is ODIS (official manufacturer ?), VCDS and VCP. I wish to be able to diagnose my car, reset the maintenance counters.
Which of these tools do you recommend ?

I know that for each tool you need the specific cable. I know that some cables can not be updated (firmware) regarding VCDS ?
Also what cable / software do you recommend that allow me software updates without damaging the cable ?

For ODIS, i discover fully, there is a lot of version E, S, etc. I do not know which one can match my vehicle.

For VCP, i don't know if it's a good tool...

More details :
- it's for personal use
- need to reset the service counters
- need to diagnose the car

ODIS, VCDS and VCP seem to meet these needs :
- VCDS would be easier to use
- ODIS would be more complicated but has a diagnostic assistant
- VCP is easier / better than these tools ?

Thanks for your responses.

See you soon.

Here a lot off the lads talking about OBD eleven and posting it's very good at doing things , but for me it's got to be the Ross-tech Hex V2 vcd's cable a little more expensive than the OBD , it comes as a 3 vin ,10vin or unlimited cable . Software is free from Ross- tech and if you register it on the site you get all the support you need , plus loads off great help in the forum's ,

You'll find Ross-Tech (Vagcom) the easier of the programs to use, its very easy to understand and there are so many guides on how to use it that you'll rarely get any issues.

Hum, another question, can i remap ECU for more power (stage 1) with VCDS ?

Thanks in advance.

Wouldn't be 100% sure if you could map by using Vcd's but a tuner I guess gas to use some kind off software . You never know ,

So if i want to remap, i must use another cable and another recognized software (WinOls) ?

You can't tune a car with VCDS, it's a diagnostic tool.
Remapping your car yourself is a terrible idea if you don't know what tools you need to do it, so either pay an expert to do it properly or leave it alone.
Tampering with things you don't understand will result in expensive mistakes, damage and more posts on forums asking how to fix the damage you caused.

I do not want to remap my ECU right away (if I did one day, I would look for each item to edit before sending the change to the car), I just wanted to know if the cable used for VCDS could also be used for programming, it was just for information.

Thanks for your responses.

its obvious youre on about counterfeit cables, as odis isnt available to the retail market, they are all updatable if you have the genuine version, and noone really outside of poland/germany/russia really uses vcp.

in that regard, the learning curve for all of them is gonna be steep. vcp isnt that easy (especially the older version which is the latest for the copied version), the whole brick your cable if you update thing with vcds is mad.

look into obdeleven. its cheap to buy genuine compared to vcp and vcds, and itll do everything you want.

I did not know this solution, thank you very much for your analysis and your additional information!

OBD Eleven is only available on Android, but IOS is in Beta testing so it should be available soon.

I have VCDS, VCP and have been using them for over a year and ODIS interface VAS6154 on order. All 3 are genuine.

VCDS is very user friendly, meets your requirements and isn’t expensive to get if you just need it for your own vehicle.

VCP is much more in depth and thus is more complicated to use in some ways but also has some guided functions. It can do more than VCDS but is only useful in those ways as a technician tool rather than personal use.

ODIS is the dealer level tool that is all singing and all dancing BUT you need an online ID with VWAG to do anything of substance. I am in the middle of getting set up with my ID and should have my interface in a week. It’s not as simple to get or set up as the other 2 by a long way.

If you just want to reset your service light and get fault codes then you can get cheap plug in tools that can do this without getting a clone interface.
