Hi guys

Hate to be that guy that signs up to a forum just to leech some advice
But in these snowy UK conditions my car is becoming almost un-driveable, and we uninformed are generally at the mercy of garages' knowledge and disposition towards ripping people off, so I am leaning on the good nature of those reading.

The car in question is a 2007 A6 Le Mans, 3.0 TDI. Affectionately known by those familiar as Sophie.

[contextual information, possibly not entirely necessary]

I got back from holiday early November, and my car battery was totally dead. Like totally. Jump-started it which took around 3 times as long as it normally does.
Upon driving a bunch of faults popped up - the ESP system, parking brakes and audio all started turning on and off at seemingly random intervals. But I drove around for 30-45 minutes to try and get the battery charged again.

The battery was dead again the next day. So dead that doors couldnt be locked. Again, jump started it. Again, the next morning, it was dead. I just assumed it was a dead battery (it was 5 years old) and all the faults were the result of some internal systems running out of juice and resetting or something. I procrastinated in fixing the issue.

Now, the driver of the other car in my household was incapacitated due to an operation and so I had an alternate vehicle for the next ~ 1.5 months, during which time Sophie didn't get a run out. Eventually as car driver #2 recovered from operation, the demand for vehicles in our household doubled, so I called the AA. A few hours later, there was a new battery in my car and all was well.

[up to date faults]

However, the original faults of ESP, parking brake, audio, as well as a bunch of others have not only returned but intensified. Now that it is snowy, car#2 which is RWD is all but useless so Sophie needs to be working.

The fault seem to have a progression, which is as follows;

#1 when at rest, with the engine on, car is fine
#2 first fault is that the central locking will turn itself on and off repeatedly. Maybe 20-30 times a minute at peak.
#3 Lights turns off intermittently. Indicating is similarly affected.
#4 Parking brake faults, ESP faults both pop up on screen.
#5 Windscreen wipers turn off intermittently
#6 Car seems to have marginally less power but this might just be in my head
#7 Audio system cuts out intermittently
#8 Window controls cut out intermittently
#9 I'm sure there's other stuff I'm forgetting but apparently the human brain can only remember 7 things at at a time so I'm doing well to reach 8
#10 EDIT: revering camera and sensors as well.

As you can see, Sophie is in dire straits and now verging on deathtrap. I am writing this having just come off a motorway in sleety conditions with windscreen wipers deciding to stop working for 5 seconds at a time giving me highly limited visibility. I was relieved to reach my exit on the motorway.

The closest I can find to this from Google is a thread from a5oc that I can't link to due to spam filters, which suggests something to do with ABS module, sensors or a wheel bearing.

I was wondering if any of you informed persons could offer any insight into the issues I am having.

Either way, thanks for reading.

Ideally the car needs a scan to see what is going on. Not that helpful I know.

My only experience of issues imilar to this was in my R5 got turbo when the alternator decided to pack up. The car would run, but as the battery died(because it was now powering the car, not the alternator) the wipers, lights, radio all died.

This could be what is happening to you, the alternator could be on its way out, or working intermittently and the car is shutting stuff down.

Hope you get it sorted.

Thanks. It's booked in for Friday so we'll see what they say.

Forget to add that power steering also cuts out, that's actually the second most common fault and occurs immediately after the central locking goes haywire.

Just to let everybody know, I got this problem fixed.

My battery control unit ECU (4F0915181) had become faulty due to a leaky bottle of antifreeze in my boot. I have had this replaced and my car has gone through a few long distance drives with no problems whatsoever.
