Morning all,

Currently I have got Pirelli P Zero(AO) on all four corners. After a recent first service they told me the front's are down to 3mm and the rear at 5mm.

Should I replace the front two like for like or replace all four with Goodyear Eagle Assymetric F3? The Goodyear has a better fuel rating and grip rating.

Thanks in advance.

I went from the Pirelli to eagles and really happy with them. Much better wear and just as quiet and still glue to the road. If anything seem better in bad weather.

You don't state what model you have but there are already some threads on tyres that might prove useful:

For price, quality, longevity, rolling resistance it’s very hard to pass on the Goodyear Eagle f1 asymmetrical 3. I would have to agree with the earlier post. What size do you run on your car?

If you are only two wheel driven then certainly you can put on two new ones and get a few months out of the other set. I would agree at 3mm is much safer to change at than the legal 1.6mm or whatever it is.

I am currently running 245/35 R19(RS alloys). I have been disappointed with the Pirelli's. They have worn really quickly.

What sort of mileage are you getting from the Pirelli tyres? I got the same engine and it has a fare amount of torque which will contribute to wear.

Also you should replace the back first. Move the old tyres to the front if you’re only getting two.

I have only had around 9k on the Pirelli's. I haven't driven the car with a heavy right foot. You are perhaps spot on regarding the torque. So you reckon put the new Goodyears on the rear and then wear down the last two Pirelli's from the rear with 5mm on the front?

That is pretty shocking. Would expect that mileage from the S4. Indeed. The thinking goes it’s safer to have more tread on the back than the front. It’s been proven over and over that’s its best practice to replace rears first. To avoid fishtailing etc. Search the internet.

“The two new tires should always be placed on the rear axle and the older tires moved to the front.” The reasoning has been proven on test tracks and in labs. It’s all about oversteering, understeering and the physics of a vehicle’s center of gravity. While the explanation requires an understanding of hydroplaning, it also applies to a loss of traction caused by snow or ice. Hydroplaning crops up when water can’t be channeled through a tire’s tread pattern, and the tire doesn’t maintain contact with the road. Worn tires will hydroplane more readily than tires with deeper treads”

I was most shocked when the service dept at Audi advised me on the state of the fronts. Will never have Pirelli again tbh.

Different owners will have different experiences with the same tyres even with the same car and it is down to the manner in which the car is driven and the type of driving conditions. Corners and the speed they are taken will also have a variable effect. Tyres used mainly around town will wear faster than a tyre used mainly on a motorway. A diesel has greater weight over the front end, so this will have a different effect upon the wear rate as well.
By asking a question in a forum you will only get replies based upon owners own experiences. It's up to you which advice you take.

I'd recommend the hankooks evo ventus that came with a lot of these Audis from new. I can't fault them for grip and wearing.

I'll happily second that, even though I originally turned my nose up at them! Worn really well on the S4 and never had an issue with grip, even launching multiple times at the drag strip, and they still have 6mm tread.

Pirelli’s are never the best wearing tyres it seems, but work very well for many. Wife has them in her JCW, and currently on 3500 miles so will see how they perform. I had Goodyear Asymmetric F1’s on 2.0 diesel A6, bit sold car before they could wear out but did seem very good...grip, noise, economy etc

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 s are very good if a bit pricey. They have been fitted to my car for around 2 weeks and i have found them very impressive . Decent in the snow today as well

Gonna stick a 3rd on that, have had two sets of hankook's on my S4, lasted about 17k a set, pretty good grip in most conditions. Due for another set soon as it's down to 3mm on the front, but am looking at changing so will risk it for a while longer

I also have the 2.0tdi 190 engine in 2WD with 18" wheels and have the Bridgestone Potenza S001. They seem to be wearing really well. Done 24K+ on them so far and the rears still have +5mm on them, fronts are a bit low now and will need changing soon though. I do quite a lot of motorway driving, so may give the Goodyear F1 a try as they are about the same price as the Bridgestone but may be a bit quieter? I think the Bridgestones are a little on the noisy side.

I have a pair of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S on the rear of my 2.0TDi Quattro, but I have the original Hankooks on the front which have covered almost 28k miles. I can't fault them and wonder at times if the Michelins were really necessary.

I have had Contis and Michellin PS3s on my S4 (B8.5) and Contis and Michellin PS4s (not 4S) on my A3 (1.4 tfsi) and I fully agree with @cuke2u re: the kind of mileage and driving style. Although I don't like Contis, the wear on them was consistent with PS3s on my S4. When I bought the S4 it had Contis on it and I did around 10kmiles before changing them to PS3s. The tread at the time I bought was 6.5 compared to 5 after 10k miles when they were taken off. PS3s on the other hand I have done nearly 10k miles and the tread is sat at healthy 6.2-6.5mm 90% of which is motorway driving.

On the A3, PS4s have been rather disappointing. The grip both in wet and dry is outstanding especially cornering however they are ****** noisy and the wear is ridiculous. All corners are currently sat at 4mm after 10k miles 80% of which is local/town mileage.

I have recently bought a set of 18s for the A3 and planning on going either PS4S or Hankooks.

+1 on the Hankooks. Lasted around 19,000 on mine and on my third set.

My S5 came on these and they're Ok - got 17000 miles out of them, but now on PS4Ss all round - sharper turn in, much, much better in the cold and wet, plus a bit quieter. Mileage? Have to wait and see - 2k on them so far.

edit: Should add: only got the Michelins as they were doing £100 cash back on 4 tyres end of last year, making them the same price as everything else.

Reviving an old thread rather than starting a new one... my front tyres need replacing after 8k miles (the Pirelli's that came with the car from new - not impressed).

I have the S4 with 245 35 R19's.

My plan is to get 2 new tyres and put these on the rear, and put the slightly warn Pirelli's from the rear onto the front.

Looking at BlackCircles, I can get Hankook Ventus S1 Evo 2's and Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric 3's for around the same price (around £140 each delivered).

The PS4S's are slightly more at around £170 each.

I've read lots of threads on here and like the sound of the Hankooks based on wear rate and performance.

Is it worth paying more for the PS4S's? Any votes for the Eagle F1's?

Is there much difference in rim protection between these options?

Thanks in advance,

Andy

The rim protector on the Hankooks is pretty good. Definitely gets my vote over the others.

Yeah, another for the Hankooks... The rim protector is extremely good (I shunted the curb in my demo car hard enough to push the tail end of the car over and there was no damage to the wheel), the wear has been good and the grip levels have left nothing to be desired. I've had them on a couple drag days and they performed well.

I'd just be careful replacing just two tyres unless the old ones aren't too badly worn because the Quattro system relies on the rolling radius. It's not going to cause you to crash or anything, it just means that it may not work out the power front/rear as well and, if you're keeping the car long term, could wear the centre diff a little more than ordinary.

Thanks for that... the car is in at Audi tomorrow so I'll get their advice on that too

I went for Michelin Pilot 4S in the end-all four corners. £177 a corner via Black Circles and fitted locally.
The ride quality is superior and much quieter compared to the Pirelli P Zero's.

Thanks for all the advice.

Good choice ;-). I agree on ride and noise.

Had my A4 2.0 TFSI Avant 2016 since Sept 2018. Came with Hankooks. I find there is a lot of torque at the front and wheel spin easily whilst pulling away even in just slightly damp/moist conditions - to the point i have to wait for a bigger gap in traffic (the delay in moving off with this auto box doesnt help either!)!! Tyres were new with the car. Still plenty of tread. Keeping an eye on everyone's opinion/feedback for when i do come to change. Cheers

Some good new tyres out including the new Nokian Powerproof, Hankook Ventus Evo 3, Goodyear f1 asymmetrical 5 & Goodyear eagle super sport range. Have a look at this video

Recent experience with the OEM Hankooks - ****** surprised and pleasantly so to be frank.
Could not fault them and if cost is an issue a definite choice.
Michelin PS4S - seem to do everything they are claimed to but are really quite noisy and harsh.
I'll stick with them on the S4 but they will be changed come the time for...
Pirelli PZ4 with NCS (Noise cancelling system) - those were on my RSQ3 and after fitting I thought that I had completely lost my hearing (getting close to that!) they are incredibly quiet and comfortable and had all the grip and turn in that I would ever need for.
Be wary of following trends like so many social media addicts - make your own mind up on what works for you/
Final comment was on the Eagle F1A3 assymetrics - on the wife's Tiguan R and a quantum beyond the Bridgestone crap that it came with - very handy choice that ticks all the boxes for us.

Right, decision time... I'm replacing all 4 tyres.

Michelin Pilot sport 4 S = £700 fully fitted
Hankook Ventus S1 Evo 2 K117 = £580 fully fitted

Are the PS4's worth the extra £120?

It’s a personal thing but I’d say not really.
I drive a new S4 B9 with the V6 motor plus tweaking and in a matter of about 3000 miles have gone from the OEM fitted Hankook to the PS4S which under normal (sane) driving provided no more grip but loads more noise, now on Conti Sport 6 and am at peace with the World. Come change time I’d go back to the Hankook that were fitted as I didn’t realise how good they were compared to the bigger names or I’d give the newer Goodyear Assymetric 5 s a try as they appear to be highly rated and my experience with the asymmetric 3 has been all good

I replaced my Hankooks with PS4S, and if I did it again I'd have stuck with the Hankooks or perhaps tried the new Goodyear Assymmetric 5s like Dingah said. That's a compliment to the Hankooks and not a criticism of the Michelins.
