I have a 2016 1.4 manual. Occasionally, I’m finding first gear is hard to engage. I feel it’s mostly when the car is cold(er). But it has certainly happened when everything is warm too.

It just feels like I need to push extra hard to engage the gear. I had thought of taking it to the dealer. But as I say, it’s occasional. So I don’t want to waste my time or theirs if there’s a simple explanation.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

The wife's manual car did this. She selects second before first and she has said it's better.

It’s good to know it’s not just me. I’ll give that a go.

But I’ve never had a car that I’ve had to use a work on something as critical as the gearbox though.

My question; is this a defect Audi will remedy under warranty or is it something I’ll just have to live with?

Like all issues mate the dealer will plug it up to a Laptop to see if there is a fault (that's their default by the way), however I would ask them to look at the selector as this may need a slight adjustment. My wife is happy to do what I suggested earlier, she's not a big fan of the dealers.

Could be the clutch not full clearing/disengaging or adjustment of the shift linkage is required?

I have the same issue on my SEAT Leon mk2 6 speed manual (1.4 TSI).

It started when the Mrs. accidentally downshifted from 2nd gear to 1st instead of shifting up to 3rd leading to a sound no motoring enthusiast should hear!

Initially 1st gear could not be selected at all, but after a couple of hours spent moving the gear shifter around with the car off, ever so slowly it would start easing up and eventually 1st could be selected.

1st gear is still, now 5 years later, more difficult to select (still works fine, only a little bit more force is needed). Never brought it to a mechanic as didn’t have the cash at the time and the problem never really persisted.

You have a different gearbox though and the gearlever will be linked to it by a different mechanism..

Interesting, sounds like the "issue" I have with mine... https://r.tapatalk.com/shareLink?ur...&share_tid=384349&share_fid=2376&share_type=t

Yeah - having a read through that thread, it does sound familiar. Question - they noted the high bite point - is that something you feel is wrong too?

I can’t say I have that issue. What I can certainly relate to is the intermittent toughness of engaging first. And it does seem to have aligned with the cold weather.

I guess I’ll have to take it in and see what they say.

I've never really noticed the bite point as high, no.
