Winter wheels

SteveMcB
All of us who have used winter tyres are sold on them for obvious reasons. The problem as us converts know, is that the outlay sometimes puts people off purchasing them. In my view (remember it is my opinion), the tyre manufacturers should phase out the making of summer tyres and only make All Season Tyres. If this was done quickly and fitted as OEM to new cars, then we would see an improvement in overall safety.

Good points Peter 123.
I ran winters on my Skoda Yeti for 3 winters, I bought steel rims and Nokian winters for just over £400. They never really saw snow but in heavy winter rain and cold temperatures they were very good. In rain you could hear them like a chamois leather wringing the water out, and last year in temperatures close to zero on the M62 near Manchester with two Mercs in the central barriers, and a Lexus on the hard shoulder [all well planished] the car felt secure and well planted. I sold them recently in anticipation of A3 arrival for £245 after about 9/10K miles so a really good result..
We have moved on though and all seasons over the last few years are now excellent. Given the choice I would have them on my new A3, but they are not available as an option. Strange as VAG give you the option on some models, eg some Skoda Octavia if 16" rims are chosen. Shame they are not consistent across the company models.

Colin

I forgot to say in my previous post. Some years ago before All Season tyres were starting to become more widespread, when the summer tyres wore out on my wife's previous car a SEAT Ibiza 1.4 SC, we went to Costco in Reading that had a special offer on Michelin winter tyres. We fitted them to all four corners and ran them all year round for 3 years. The wear rate was consistent with summer tyres and they were still on the car when we part exchanged it last year.

How are all your winter wheels/tyres holding up in this (yet another) mild winter we are having? I think I’ve had one slightly frosty morning so far, and it’s spring in 6/7 weeks time. My temp gauge for 99% of the winter so far has averaged 8/9 degrees.

As long as you all feel that the effort was worth it then that’s all that matters right:hi:

Been quite a few cold and very wet days in Scotland. Winters have been fine so far. Winter is coming.

I realise it’s geographical and my previous comments about me not thinking they are worth it have been based on where I live. Unfortunately some have taken it upon themselves to get offended by my views and opinions, hence my sarcastic post.

IF I lived in Scotland then I’d probably fit them.

Meteorologically speaking winter started on December 1st and thus far its been balmy. Absolutely no need down my way for winter wheels whatsoever, same as every winter.

Or the previous 30 years that I’ve been driving, doh!!

If I lived in a house for 30 years without having to make one claim then I doubt an insurance policy would be at the forefront of my mind.

There’s your logic mate:hi:

It’s been one of those fit and forget type things.
1 light snow day and a lot of damp cold days.
Probably would have survived without them so far but glad I fitted them as I found a nail in my summer tyres on the ****** new one as well.

Well I don’t know where you live but I can recall some winters with a foot of snow in the roads in southern England in the past decade or so

Difference is you don’t have to change them twice a year to compensate for what weather you MIGHT get. Lol.

Me too, but I just drove according to the conditions, zero accidents.

It’s all about being prepared . You clearly can predict the weather . I can not . It’s an hour to change . I really don’t see why you are so against .

You can drive as carefully as you want but if you have to drive up a steep snow covered hill covered in snow you won’t get to the top. I’ve driven in the alps when it’s been so slippy that wheels spin even with snow chains on.

I have to change the batteries for the fire I MIGHT get . Maybe I can live to the conditions.

Firstly I can’t predict the weather (who can?) and secondly I’ve never once said I was against it, I just don’t think it’s worth the effort that’s all. No need to get all offended.

Oh? On the odd occasion that we’ve had any decent snow I’ve often driven up and down steep hills. Drive according to the conditions, nothing scientific.

In that case you’re the living proof that winter tyres and snow chains are not needed and a waste of money. I wonder why the police don’t allow cars without winter tyres or snow chains to drive up alpine passes when it’s snowing?

As I have said previously the primary reason why I fit them is they are mandatory where I travel in Europe . However even if I didn’t travel to regions that require them in the winter I would still fit in the uk .
The tyres are a zero cost , the life of my summers is extended . Cost to change , or purchase of winter wheels minimal relative to cost of vehicle .
I think you are going out of your way having revived this to wind us all up . I’m not sure why .

No mate, I’m living proof that in most parts of this country where at worst we might get a few inches of snow you don’t necessarily NEED winter tyres.

IF we had proper winters like some countries then winter tyres and/or snow chains are essential.

I’m not offended that you choose to use winter tyres so don’t be offended if I choose not to.

My comment about us having yet another mild winter was just tongue in cheek. I expected one or two amusing responses, but as it turns out it seems that my decision not use use winter tyres really seems to offend those who do.

Not to self....do not express your opinions on this forum and definately don’t try and have a laugh.

Yep bored wind up merchant afoot me thinks. FWIW I hope this (and every other) winter stays mild but it's not over yet, parts of mainland Europe are seeing heavy snow and the Beast from the East didn't arrive until the end of February last year.

If it does chuck it down, and I hope it doesn't, still think I'll be able to resist the opportunity for a good gloat - probably :)

Hahaha I’m neither bored or a wind up merchant, calm yourself cupcake.

If me giving my opinions on winter wheels winds you up then that’s your problem mate, not mine.

Hmmm, last years ‘beast from the east’ was pretty horrendous I’ll admit, but me and my A3 survived unscathed:footy:

'Cupcake' - cute - but TBH I'm not remotely interested in your opinions on winter tyres and you can also rest assured that it takes an awful lot more than someone banging on endlessly about what a waste of time they are to wind me up. Bottom line is they are worth having.

Glad you survived the Beast intact, just a shame that everyone else isn't as skilled at finding traction as your good self cause then I wouldn't have got stuck in the summer tyre gridlock. Hopefully it stays mild - for you.

Don’t worry about me cupcake, I just drive according to the conditions. Luckily for me I live in the U.K., where generally the winters are mild and wet, with maybe the odd flurry here and there.

I do agree with about one thing, winter tyres are definitely needed.....if you lived somewhere that endured proper winters. Luckily most of the U.K. gets off lightly:rock:

You say that my decision not to use winter wheels/tyres doesn’t wind you up, but here you are replying AGAIN.

Comedy gold:haha:

I believe previously you have said you are a member of the fire service . I’m surprised therefore you wouldn’t be promoting anything that helped avoiding accidents that presumably you have to attend. Clearly your driving ability may exceed others but that is not the point why we were discussing it . I can’t be bothered with people that just come on here to take the other side . You revived this conversation just for conflict as you have done previously. I will not be responding to you again and hopefully I can find a way to block you from appearing again .

You are correct in that I am in the Fire Service, but you are way out when you say that I post just to provoke a reaction. Forums aren’t meant for people that agree on everything otherwise what would be the point?

When I first made a post about my decision not to use winter tyres I was met with so much abuse it was laughable. You guys think that our mild winters are worth the expense and ball ache of winter tyres.....and I don’t. The 12 tonne plus trucks that we drive aren’t fitted with winter tyres so why would I fit them to my little A3? I don’t get offended by your decision so don’t be offended by mine.

It’s such a simple concept but people like you just don’t get it....drive according to the conditions.

I’ll admit, my post yesterday was tongue in cheek, but once again some of you took offence. Why?

Mate, you crack on and block me all you like, it won’t stop me from expressing my non offensive opinions on certain things.

Ridiculous and hilarious in equal measure

If some people want the small inconvenience of fitting winter tyres and the cost.. Then so be it. Its not exactly doing any harm.. and it's a good proactive measure. And even if you drive to the conditions, maybe on a wet, cold day on the motorway something might happen and you need to brake hard...maybe having a set of winter tyres could prevent a collision.

Don't see why this topic was bumped just to wind people up....

Not doing any harm at all mate, I’ve never once said it does.

And I didn’t bump it to wind anyone up, it was a tongue in cheek comment that’s all. In my naevity I was expecting one or two amusing replies but no, just more people getting all excited and wound up

Ask yourself, why would my decision not to use winter tyres wind anyone up anyway?

I know, hilarious isn’t it.

I’m bored with this now. You think that winter tyres are worth it and I don’t, get over it

It doesn't. But the tongue in cheek post and saying how you don't think they are worth it because of x, y, z (on every post) when someone is looking for recommendations does.

I have my summer tyres on, and no plans to change to winters, but I see why people buy them. I just don't see the need for the post.... Anyway...

Erm....because that is what forums are designed for, to offer different opinions and perspectives.

Oh hang on, maybe AudiSport is different, are we all meant to share the same views?

Perhaps that’s where I’ve been going wrong then:blush:

No of course not. But that also doesn't mean bumping a thread to say the exact same thing you did on the first page months ago... It added nothing.

Sigh....
