When turning off the car I usually just press the Stop button. Sometimes, that puts the car in Park with the Parking Brake on. Sometime it just puts the car in Park. Sometimes it does neither.

I would prefer the car to go into Park with the Parking Brake on.

Does anyone know the logic the car uses and why the behaviour differs sometimes?

Charles

Certainly with my car the auto operation of the EHB when stopping the engine is completely random, even at the same parking place. As for the 'P' mode, when this randomness happens is there anything else different, such as not wearing the seatbelt, or the door is open?

There has to be a pattern to this! What that pattern is though? For me, it 100% of the time puts the 'box in P and the parking brake on when I reverse onto my drive and press the off button. But only if I get it right 1st time, if I have to go forward and then back again, I get the "please select P, car will roll away if you don't" message.

For me depends on the angle of the car. If I am on a flat service I have to press the button but if I am on a down slope the car applies automatically

Lol why don't you just press P?!

For me, it always goes into park, it is just that the handbrake isn't always engaged. I would say it works about 80% of the time, but then randomly doesn't. Note that whatever this logic is, they've copied it over into the new A6! So in nearly 3 years I have yet to work it out...

i know what you mean i park in my drive the same way every day (in, reverse, turn around and park) no change always the same way but some times i press stop it goes into park handbrake comes on all good but 80% of the time the handbrake wont come on some i have to manually do it.

my previous 2014 A6, perfect everytime. very odd

Yes iti s just weird, it cannot belocation dependant, as it happens in my drive. It isn't due to anything else either as I do the same everytime. I just have to remember to look down and see if the redlight is illuminated on the switch.
Again this random behavior has been reported before in this forum...

I didn't even know this was possible so I'll just try turning the car off from now on. Fyi if you stop in manual the paddle moves right on its own when P is engaged!

Must admit, I just reverse, stop, select P, parking brake on and press start/stop button. Works every time :tearsofjoy:

But like @terminator x , I'm going to just skip to the start/stop button from now on to see what happens.

You can code the car to auto engage the parking break when stopped.

The one that gets me (still getting used to it) is park, push P, then the ****** auto start stop kicks in grrrrrr. Push start stop button and car starts again. I look a right muppet in petrol station forecourts....like I stalled it.

Because the engine isn’t actually off the ignition remains on hence when I push the start stop button (foot not on brake) it kicks back in again, it’s just the annoying auto start stop function.

I see, I guess I am paranoid and have to turn the car completely off when filling with petrol...

Exactly this: Having coded it with OBDEleven, I only ever press the stop button - both Park and Handbrake are applied automatically 100% of the time. Why press three buttons when you can press one?

Well I only press one button and usually 9 times out of 10 the others are applied automatically. Butyou are correct and I, as well, don't understand why anyone is applying anything manually...

mine sets the the gear box to p and handbrake on when pressing the engine off button 100% of the time when going forward. but if ive just reversed maybe 10% of the time the gear and parking brake come on when pressing the engine off.

i was thinking about getting OBDEleven could you give me the instructions on how to set it as you have cheers.

Sure - you just go to Brakes / Adaptation / Automatic parking brake and set it to Yes.

Nice easy 2 minute job :)

Not really, the one in my A3 was flawless...

It worked perfectly on my A4 B9, doesn't work at all with the A7 :/

Mine 100% on forward motion, never on R.

i think it has something to do with autohold, in forward its fine 100% of the time the engine stop puts it into park and handbrake comes on.

but in reverse the autohold doesnt stay on so that why the hand brake rarely comes on when engine stop is pressed.

ive got OBDEleven coming so gonna see if i can code the autohold to stay on when in reverse.
