Hi,
I have seen Red coil packs and harness cover for sale.
Some are Audi, some are NGK and some that are probably copies.

Apart from the look, is there any improvement ? was looking at R8 coil packs.

I installed r8 coil packs over the weekend and I must say that the response is better. Maybe it’s a mental thing but I have noticed an improvement

I fitted R8 red ones a while back and there did seem to be a more crisp throttle response, was it just my imagination, allways possible ……
red harness also, from TPS.

OK you convinced me, best place to buy? was looking at ASK Tuning for coilpacks and red harness cover, unless you no better ???

Rob, like your engine cover, what paint did you use? and is that an old geko air freshener?

Cant take the credit for the engine cover chap, I snapped it up from another B7 owner that was selling up....it is nice, and a proper geko …not an air fresherner ,what are you like chap..haha
I picked up the R8 coil pack's from the same guy for a lot less than the normal price so very lucky, harness cover from TPS and not expensive.

search NGK 48041 Zündspule on amazon.de

As well as the R8, red coil packs are standard fit to the 3.2 FSI lump in my A4 and I recall reading somewhere recently they are a service item, to be replaced every 50K or so, and as I'm close to 300K I thouht it time to change mine.

So got them from amazon.de at around 25 Euros a piece which was half of what Audi wanted, and I believe NGK are the OEM manufacturer.

looking side by side, the only difference I saw between OEM and the NGKs was the presence of the NGK logo on the ones I just put in.

depends on your location as to stockist but this is the oem part number and it is readily available.

surprised to see no R8 OEM alloy effect oil cap on neither engine pictured though ;-)

If anyone wants to try some out I have 8 for sale that have done 2k in an RS 4.

£20 delivered.
COIL PACKS 50

Just ordered mine and the Red cover for the loom from ASK Tuning uk. They have a sale with a discount on them.

At the risk of sounding errrrrrrr..... stupid, is there any reason you can't take your original packs off and just carefully paint them?

Thats about right price, there just over £9.00 so if you add vat and delivery.

I guess you could paint them, something that stands up to heat.
I just bought the red ones, as it could be a bit time comsuming painting the black ones.

+1 Picked up mine from Awesome.

Just out od curiosity regarding the coul packs being a service item, ive just trawled through my service book for an answer. From what i can see coil packs aren't part of the service plan at any milage but my 06 2.0tfsi had its coil packs replaced at 50.000 miles for recall 28E9, according to a google search the recall applies to all tfsi lumps.

On the other hand my red harness cover arrived this morning from Awesome gti for £14.99.

Whats the general consensus on the r8 coil packs? Worth the money?

R8 coils used to be cheaper than OEM standard coils, that's why I bought them!

Someone actually did some bench testing:

For those of you looking for more technical data on these coil packs, here is what we've found so far with our bench ( oscilloscope ) testing:

1) These coils can be used on your FSI/TSI engine at ANY level of modification. They function just as well on a dead stock car as a highly modified one.

2) They are NOT the same coils with red housings. The secondary circuit on the R8 coils has a higher resistance (more windings) than the stock coils. In fact the secondary circuits were slightly closer to the Okadas we tested than the secondary of the stock coils.

3) We tested these between 12 and 16 volts (remember if your alternator is charging properly the input will be right around 14). We tested them between 200 and 16,000rpm. The stock coils started to misfire at a much lower rpm than the R8's with a stock spark plug gapped @ .032".

4) The spark was visibly brighter and more intense on the R8's when compared to the stock coils @ every rpm we compared in the stock rev range. We didn't compare anything under 1,000rpm.

5) We were able to open the gap on the plugs much further with the R8's than the stock plug with out misfiring at the same rpm/voltage.

6) Here is what we were finding as an AVERAGE on the secondary circuit for each of the coils.

Stock: 3.3 M ohms
5 cylinder coils: 4.75 M ohms
R8's: 5.31 M ohms
Okadas: 6.2 M ohms
