What have you done to your Audi A4 B7 today?

Been a little busy with mine over the last week but got to the exciting bit today so thought I'd add a few picks for you guys. A couple of weeks ago whilst I was sat in traffic someone a couple of cars back forgot to brake and shunted the car behind me into my rear end, The car had just had a new bumper just before I bought it and now needed another plus some repair to the tailgate. I work as a panel beater so I have done the repair and also got some extra work done whilst it was in. I now owe the painter a massive favour as he's done a fantastic job on it.

I can finally get rid of the rippley door where someone has attempted to repair it. Replacement straight door is the way forward.

Also took the opportunity to fit the spoiler to the bumper better as it was too far back and flopping about in the middle and I have put the RS4 grille in there to see how it looks. Got loads of ideas what to do with this but I'm not sure on any yet. I like the black surround but will need to do something with the gutter and window mouldings and roof bars but I might see about getting all these plus my old chrome grille surround which has bubbled redone in satin chrome assuming they can strip and redo the grille surround. This will then tie in nicely with the roof bars and mirror caps. Then I have had the idea of doing the RS4 grille in grey as it ties in with the S4 rear bumper spoiler or I could do that black too but then I'm fond of the standard S4 grille which would look good with the satin surround or then AAAAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!

Sorry to hear about the incident, looks like really good job on the repair. I'll reframe from providing thoughts on colours for now as it's probably easier to suggest when seeing the whole car plus cars are a very personal thing and I'm sure some of the choice items and colours I've chosen for mine others disagree with.

The Rs4 grille with black surround looks good but kinda feel that unless you do all the other brightwork around the car it may look a tad bitty...., the satin silver would blend better with your existing trim but all down to your personal choice really, one persons choice may not be for the next person, whatever you prefer really chap.
I had the black surround and I liked it to start with but then felt it just looked out of place with my satin trim hence why I went satin surround which I feel looks better, but hey its that personal choice thing again.

good luck with it which ever way you go, eitherway it will still be great.

here is an good pic with the black surround in your body colour.

Oil & filter change. New Powerflex snub nose mount as the original had all but disintegrated. Also adjusted the front coilovers and raised the height by about 5mm. Speed bumps are feeling a little less harsh now!

Picked up the old bus a couple of months ago for what I believe was a bargin, however she did need a little bit of TLC on the outside. Got the four arches tidied up (very small bubbles of rust removed) and whilst there got the back bumper resprayed as a previous job in the past had been done poorly!

Body shop got my parking sensors flush and I decided to go with gloss black on the diffuser (£300 all in) .

Brought her home and then gave her a good wash, clay bar, and wax. Also got the fine sand paper and metal polish to those exhaust tips :)

Looks good buddy, i have a black valance that i keep swapping with the oem red one as im unsure whether it suits, i think its the satin black exhaust tips that ruins the look when the black valance is on.

Purchased a new armrest lid for the avant for the grand sum of £10.90 off the old ebay. Quality is also suprising good for a non gen part. Due to the amount these latches brake, i was unsure whether my lid was original or not so i went for a more textured grainy look the match the seats. Its just a shame it looks so good!

They pop of easy enough, re installing takes a few positive thumps however.

Sooooo, annoyingly 5 days after completely upgrading and flushing my brake system I get an ABS Error light!!!

I instantly think of the worse and thought of a knackered ABS pump from the flush, or that I may have disturbed a wheel speed sensor in the process. However my OBDeleven (I can't praise enough) came into full effect and with a code 00526 it was pointing at my brake pedal sensor.

£13.45 for a switch, fitted and cleared the code and now all is well :sunglasses: Just had to remove 3 screws on the lower drivers console to maintain access, 10 min job. I always wonder how much Audi would charge for these little jobs!

Old original on the left, and updated on the right.

Maybe i try wrapp it in situ.im sure to break something if i got thump it back on?

No dont panic, i swap mine regularly, and have no isuues, plus im a panel beater so i do it for a living! Its more a case of seating it with a little persuasion. Adding a little lube when re installing may help too.

When I swapped mine over I found it really easy , just laid underneath the bumper and pinged the retaining clips with a flat head screwdriver and off it came with no effort , went on fine aswell.

Dont sound so bad, think i will try take it off, makes for a better job?

Can you link to the part that you bought? I just bought one for my A4 B7 Cab and it doesn’t fit at all

Started making my exhaust. Still need to finish the middle section. first time and a basic inverter tig kit, but paying off.

Carried out the first oil change on the old girl today. Now at 111k and still pulling better than anything I've ever had :)

Whilst draining however, I did notice how extremely thin the oil seemed to have been! It was like water, no word of a lie. Is this normal? I've completed dozens of oil changes on various vehicles in the past and nothing quite compared. Just last week I did the wifey's Q3, which I carry out every 9k without fail, and it seemed thicker and possibly darker. The avant is my first Diesel, has this got something to do with it?

After resetting the service reminder, I used OBDeleven to change the service schedule to Fixed at 9,000 miles. Yes, I have used Long Life oil, but there is no way I will be leaving oil in her for longer than this. I just see LL3 as being a better oil than a 5W40 (504/507) if it recommended by manufactures to be "good enough" for up to 19k.

Finally got around to remapping.
Always been totally underwhelmed by the performance of the Tfsi despite being a Spec Ed 216 bhp.
It's actually my 2nd identical version (Avant Quattro Tfsi S-Line Spec Ed), the first having been written off by someone having a diabetic blackout and hitting us head-on when he drifted over the line in his Jeep Grand Cherokee. Had to have the same again as even the fire crew who attended couldn't believe both us and our dogs got out with barely a scratch. Apparently the third Audi A4/A6 of this era they had dealt with in a month which had protected the occupants in serious crashes, and everyone stood around admiring the old girl despite only having 3 legs left attached.

Anyway, I decided to try the Superchips Bluefin 'cos I wasn't looking to squeeze every last drop out of it and wanted the option to temporarily revert to standard (and Shark is sadly no more) just in case the clutch starts to show signs of struggling.

Got to say I'm pleasantly surprised. I didn't expect all that much of an improvement as on paper the increase isn't huge, but it's SO much nicer to drive. Still very well mannered pootling about below about 3000 revs, but properly wakes up once you're above that! Still not a 'pin you back in your seat' effect (I was spoilt by having a 220bhp A3 8L before moving up in the world), but no longer feel like I need to push the engine to 6000+ rpm when overtaking etc.

I think the info given on the Bluefin website is a bit misleading. Their max figures (for the 216 bhp DTM) appear lower than the std 196 bhp version gets after remapping, and their power/torque curves show the same thing. BUT.... it looks to me as though the DTM they used to produce those figures/graphs was a bit down on power to begin with.

Either way, the car feels like it's got a new lease of life and I'm currently a happy bunny. Although I'm sure I'll be used to it in a week or so and feeling the need for more....

The thing with the B7 is that it is faster than it feels , it's a lot bigger than a A3 and heavier so the speed thing is less noticeable, bit like comparing a mini cooper with a Mondeo ST , both are fast but one is a go kart instead.

My old bus is on 270 which is not really that much compared to most new kit, but it goes like stink , the b7 A4's are well built and the performance is less noticeable even though they are fast, I rather enjoy the great performance and refined driving the B7 offers and I can hear my music playing aswell..lol

Thanks Baka. All happened about 18 months ago. It was a very close thing (his front wheel smashed through my driver's side window and he rolled a couple of times). Fortunately I saw it coming and was stationary and tucked up against the nearside kerb at the moment of impact. I even had time to throw myself across my better half to try and shield her, although this just meant when the SRS deployed I took it sideways so neck was sore afterwards. Didn't drive for a couple of months afterwards (no car and then no confidence) and don't think I'll ever feel quite the same. In 25+ years of driving, it was my first road accident involving another vehicle (had a few on the track), and the only one which wasn't my own fault. Left me very aware that no matter HOW careful you might be, you can still end up ****ed!

Yeah Rob, obviously I knew when initially swapping to the A4 that the 400kg+ weight penalty without any increase in power would mean a significant drop in performance, but I think it's more to do with how it's delivered TBH. Firstly the A3 would deliver a huge shove from about 2500 rpm, but always felt breathless by about 5500, so I tended to start out any overtaking manoeuvre in a higher gear (3rd) to avoid having to shift mid way past. Whereas the BUL engine keeps pulling all the way to the redline (not that I ever do - too much mechanical sympathy), so to really take advantage of the power you have to hold the gears much longer than the A3.

The other thing is that the A4 is SO much more composed that it feels as though it NEEDS more power, because of how well it handles what it's already got.

Stupid as it seems, it's always felt a bit, well, undignified to pass someone at 6000+ rpm, lol. Especially in a car that looks SO good. (I know others may disagree, but I fell in love with the B7 Avant when it was first released and personally think it's still one of the best looking models ever produced. I've never been quite as keen on the saloons (just as well with 3 dogs), and the non-S-line saloon always looked totally out of proportion to me.)

To put it into context, we live in an area with lots of 60 limits, interspersed with 30 zones through villages. So I spend much of my time stuck behind people doing 40-45 in a 60 regardless of how perfect the weather and road conditions are. If you overtake them (even on a dead straight stretch with plenty of space) and you're at high revs, it fairly often results in being flashed and gesticulated at. That's irritating enough, but what REALLY ****s me off is that these same type of people then drive at EXACTLY the same 40-45 mph through the 30's! So they either leave me standing if they're in front, or sit an inch off my tailgate if they're behind. Sigh!

Initial feeling on the remap is that I'll probably be able to make most overtaking manoeuvres a gear higher than I used to be, which would be enough to make the car feel perfect (for now, lol).

Finally had enough of the LED drl/sidelight setup on my old bus, it all failed miserbly this morning , so just ripped it all out and went back to the oem items that at least work in the dark.
Just too much hardware going on for what it does....

Going from a FWD A4 TFSI to a quattro A4 TFSI, to me the Fwd 'feels' much faster. The quattro has this kind of refined magic carpet feeling when you boot it, it just gains speed without any fuss.

One of the fastest feeling cars I've had was a Volvo S40 T4, because when the turbo spooled about 4k, the thing went mental and tried to throw you in a hedge.

For what its worth , I found the biggest noticible change was when I fitted a larger bore down pipe and a 034 sports cat , K&N flat panel filter helps a bit aswell, but most certainly the cat and downpipe changes made a massive improvement....

I used to hear a lot of folks say the same about the A3 vs S3 (8L). Clearly the S3 is a much quicker car, but people making the step up from a FWD A3 often said it felt slower. And we all know that hasn't even got REAL Quattro... (pulls pin and waits for the transverse crowd to explode) lol.

I keep debating the 034. I've got a recurring P0420 which will stay clear for weeks if I'm getting a chance to drive her properly, but pops up after a day or two of having to crawl around in rush hour traffic (so could be the rear sensor or cat). Will probably be going for an 034 HFC if I need to replace.

Going to sound awful but I'm kind of waiting to see how well yours lasts... I was all set to buy a set of those LED/DRLs when you first posted about your Morimoto problems. A tiny bit of digging was enough to persuade me that I might regret the purchase, and then lo and behold your DRLs start failing too! Gutted for you mate, 'cos they looked great, and it's not just small change for all the stuff that has failed. Does you no good Rob, but Thanks so much for posting about your lighting woes, 'cos it's saved me from making a costly mistake.

Incidentally I've already got a brand new Milltek MSAU297 downpipe (cat to system) sat in my loft. My first Spec Ed failed it's MOT on exhaust blowing from the Y joint so I bought a Milltek cat-back system to replace it, but the cat flange bolts were seized/inaccessible so I just fitted it from the std downpipe backwards. I've kept meaning to see if it's worth anything to anyone or if I should just keep hold of it in case the need arises. Am I right in thinking it would do the job of joining an 034 to the OEM system (with a reducer)?

I had a custom down pipe fabricated for my old bus as I still use the OEM system and there are fitment issues when using the 034 cat and MSAU downpipe if not using a milltek system on quattro's otherwise i'd have used the Milltek downpipe.
yep had some expensive failures along the way but touch wood the old bus is running pretty well otherwise.

That being the case I think I'll just list the downpipe I've got as for sale then. Not going to make a swap to the full Milltek on this one. Had the downpipe back system on my first Spec Ed and really didn't like it TBH. It was a non-res (all that was available in the timeframe I needed it) and was absolutely unbearable on motorway runs. It was OK when under load, but droned REALLY badly when cruising.

Have you had any p0420 codes since fitting the HFC? (Can't remember if you've had to fit an extension on the rear O2 or had it coded out and the forum search isn't great these days...)

The HFC I bought came with the extension spacer fitted so it worked out very well, I did have an issue getting the rear cat sensor out of the factory cat and when I refitted it an error popped up, so replaced the sensor but to be honest it probably failed due to be manhandled to start with as I just couldn't get it out without getting serious with it.
Since then its been fine , well on the lambda sensor front that is, allways something that need replacing or fixing..haha
