Hi

I have recently purchased an ex-demo 2016MY 2.0TDi Sport and was wondering how to update the maps on the SD card to the latest version. I have read on here that you can download the latest version from myAudi but I have registered, had a look and cannot find anything useful. Any suggestions?

On the a3 with sd card based nav the only way to update the maps that's on the sd card was to purchase another and have it registered to the car, as the present one is as you cannot use the downloaded versions on myaudi. Whether this has changed with the A4 or not I don't know...

Hi,
You can update via the myaudi site, but as I found a couple of days ago, you require Java installed on your computer. Then, when you select audi connect>map update>"select map">prepare package, it downloads a small java file which then manages the download. You need a 16gB SD card I think for a full download

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I don't see map update>"select map">prepare package, in the Audi Connnect horizontal menu.

IIRC you need to have registered your car with myAudi by entering the VIN to be able to get the downloads (menu > My vehicles > add a new vehicle). Have you done that? If so it should be accessible via menu > my vehicles > click on the car > Audi connect services > map update. Depending how old the car is you might not need it, mine (albeit a MY17) was on the latest version already.

I don't have map update option either

None of the above works with a SD based nav on the A3, I am not sure but I also think it'll not work on the A4. Think about it, on the technology pack versions the maps are all on the hard drive. On the SD card based ones they are on the SD card, which is protected...

IIRC you can update the maps over the Internet from the MMI?

If so, with the MY16 if you can get it connected to your home wifi that would be one way. For MY17, you could use your data plan to accomplish it.

Actually, the SD card might be the issue: I have the tech pack on mine so the nav data is on the HD and I'm only using an SD card to get it from the computer to the car. Not sure what happens with SD-based nav though. the brochure mentions online map updates as being part of the tech pack as well, so maybe cars without that don't get them?

Correct, you cannot update the sd card maps at all because each card is licenced to the vehicles and possibly encrypted. I have not know of anyone who has been able to update their sd maps on an a3 by uploading anything to them. However, as stated, I might be wrong with the a4 but unlikely. Plus the maps are over 18gb's in size thus performing that within the car will take some time and be data expensive...

On the A4, the process is to download onto a pc and then copy to a SD card (you are correct, the size of the download is around 20gB for the full maps). The SD card can then be used to transfer the data to the car. You can also do much smaller updates if you choose a single country, eg UK

The user guide seems to only show updating by SD card method

I think there is an option to update internally on the technology pack but I would advise against it as you probably have to have the car ignition on and because of the large size of the download that might be for several hours...

I have a April 2016 manufactured A4 and have updated the maps via home WiFi but as cuke2u said, it takes a while. I did UK alone and I think it was about 75 minutes. The issue was not the speed of my broadband but the speed of the servers supplying the data (or maybe the max speed that audi's WIFI interface can work at). So its possible, make sure the battery is nice and full, switch aircon, lights etc off....and good luck!

Plus the update download runs through a java applet then has to do a verify then eventually it will copy across to what ever media you are using..

Is this update suitable for Audi Q3 also? How can I update the maps of Europe including Cyprus map?

As cuke2u has mentioned a few times, unless your MY2016 has the tech pack, you’ll have to buy the SD card from Audi (£250 if I am not mistaken... ouch) or investigate how to get a preloaded SD card to update the maps.

I had this confirmed at the Audi dealership.

I’m in the same boat. It’s a bit of a shame. In 2016, why it couldn’t support over the air updates (it’s a connected car after all). Especially as it has CarPlay to compete with. But that’s the decision they made. At least until later that year (if I understand correctly).

For now, I’m happy with CarPlay and Waze/google maps. Though having directions in the console in front of the steering wheel would be nice.

Given time, I’ll look at side losing it, as has been mentioned else where and report back.

I assume that it is the same for all cars that have the maps on a sd card instead of, as with the technology pack, hard drive based sat nav. It is unfortunate that owners do not find out this before they purchase the vehicle but it is what it is and has been so for a number of years.
There is always a black market for map updates, and they can be found on the interweb, however with the Audi version being activated by the dealership this has just about killed off that access for our cars...

@TDubYa CarPlay is all good and well but you need a data connection to start the route. Not always possible in 2018. Always good to have the backup of the built in satNav. I wouldn’t be updating it after my free period though.

Google maps supports offline maps. Once you set the area it stores the map locally (on your phone) without the need for a data connection. You can enter you destination, it will plan the route. The lot.
All you lose in that instance is live traffic. But that’s the same if you’re using the onboard sat nav.
Like I say, ideally I’d have the ability to update maps for free. But Car Play isn’t an impediment in that instance.

Oh didn’t know that, I tend to avoid everything google except for YouTube as I’ve no other choice when it comes to videos.

For sure. Other offline map apps are available for both android and iOS that will connect to your car via car play / android auto. And they’ll cost much less than Audi’s £250 per incremental update.

I don’t have virtual cockpit though. So car based maps aren’t quite as impactful.
