Difference between the S8 & S6 5.2 V10 (C6)

Does anyone know what the differences are between the C6 S6 and S8 V10 engines?
They appear to be slightly different in power although technically the same.
Is it simply the ECU?
 
I would say so.
I have an A6 with the B8 s4 v6 engine. It use to have 40 bhp less than the S4 even though it's exactly the same. The only difference is the ECU . S4's use a simos 8.4 but I run the 8.3.
