I bought my Avant partly - or perhaps mainly - for its load-lugging ability. I seem to be folding the rear seats and removing the luggage guard and rear luggage cover and then replacing them on a fairly regular basis. A few months ago I didn’t have time to put it all back together before we were off out somewhere and I drove around with the car in ‘van’ configuration. Other than folding the rear seats back up again, I’ve been driving around with it like that ever since and I’ve now got used to it.

The luggage guard and retractable cover are quite heavy items and can be tricky to replace, particularly the luggage guard and it seems to me that I’m saving a fair bit of weight. I can’t say that I’ve noticed an improvement in performance as the car flies along anyway. Security isn’t an issue either (not that I ever leave valuables in the boot) as I have privacy glass and without a torch, the contents of the rear seats and boot are not visible from outside.

Has anybody else gone minimalist like this?

I’m currently running van spec just because I’ve been too lazy to put the bits back in. Lol. I know what you mean about them being pretty heavy though!

The thing with the luggage guard is that I thought it would be a ‘nice to have’ and it was standard spec anyway. However, I’ve never used it and would happily leave it out permanently, but if you have the luggage cover in place, there’s a sizeable gap between the rear seat and the luggage cover.

I regularly carry 2 dogs in the car so have a dog guard. To make it fit the luggage guard thing has never been in and the load cover is in and out all the time. Make a helluva difference to the space in the boot tbh and heavy things to lug in and out

Dumping passengers by the kerbside is often a good source for weight saving, can always cut down on the annoying noises as well ;-)

One option I seriously would like is the 007 style 'eject front passenger's seat'.

Usually drive with both fitted & luggage guard 'up'. Certainly cuts down sun reflections during the day and headlights of high 4WDs & trucks at night.
With SWMBO (with her handbag) & I aboard the Avant is 'nigh on 2 tonnes, so the weight saving makes little difference. Having the DTUK Trilogy more than makes up, especially when handbag free ;-).

I’ve often thought about the luggage guard as an anti-dazzle, anti-glare measure, but I have privacy glass and the rear view is already considerably darkened. I think the luggage guard would give such limited rearward view I’d be worried about missing something or somebody behind me. I rarely carry anything in the boot above the rear seat level, so I could happily do without it. The next owner will have a mint condition luggage guard (once I’ve removed all the dust it’s gathering in the garage).

Mirror auto dimming is a god send. Ever other car on the road in 2018 is an SUV / 4x4 with HID / LED lights on full blast. Having ones retinas burned out aint fun.

As soon as I got the car, they came out. And the luggage netting. As well as the floor mats. Replaced by the after-market ones from my B6. Which had the originals put back in when I sold it. All up in the loft of the garage, in poly bags. Third Avant I have done this in.
As Boosted_six, mirror auto-dimming is the business. Did'nt know I had it for a couple of months.
And the roller cover, if it is extended, is just an invitation to wonder if anything worthwhile is being hidden.

The auto-dimming interior mirror was one of the items of standard spec that sold me on the car. Headlights are so bright nowadays (including my own LEDs!), I got fed up in my previous car of trying to avoid being dazzled by following cars it was a must in my next car. I also thought the self-retracting luggage cover would be useful, but as explained above, it now spends more time out of the car than in its proper place.
