Hello all

I have a 2017 Audi A4 2.0 TDI S-Line S-Tronic. Some time ago, I noticed I could hear a 'clunking' sound the first time the gearbox switched up from 3rd to 4th gears after starting the car. Every other gear change after that, there are no unusual noises - only the first time from a parked start. It doesn't matter whether gearbox is in normal/sport/efficiency etc.

I've tried to capture the sound, two recordings:

https://vocaroo.com/i/s1guBuDCWkZ2
(the first one is probably better, about 6/7 seconds in)

I have the car booked in for it's second service next month and I've asked them to take a look, but does anyone have any ideas? Given it always (and only) happens when the gearbox switches from 3rd to 4th gears after a parked start, I'm assuming it's something related to the DSG box... but perhaps others have a better idea what it might be!

Does it happen every time without fail no matter the terrain. Sometimes if the mechatronic pre selects a higher gear but the terrain actually means it needs to go down one you can hear that especially when slowing down. The sound isn’t clear and to be honest don’t think you’ll get help on here. It’s the sort of thing that needs look at.

How does it feel since you had it? I had my gearbox replaced but it was to do with juddering. Don’t be alarmed though as mine was a edge case. Get it looked at whilst in warranty because it’s big money out of warranty.

Happens the first time I start the car from parked and it changes from 3rd to 4th, without fail - whether going uphill, downhill, still on the flat, using accelerator gently, pushing accelerator harder... After that first time it's switched up from 3rd to 4th, there are no other unusual noises and I never hear it again (until I've parked, and start the car again...)

Definitely get it looked at. It’s one for Audi though. I’ve got my money on the Mechatronic unit but that’s just a guess.

Are you sure it isn't the abs self test...

I’d guess it’s that in auto it will be changing 3/4 around the speed it does the test

A clunk from the footwell area only when the car is first started. After that it will not repeat it until the engine is turned off...

Try from first start driving in manual hold 3rd longer and see if the clunk happens without the gear change

Get it looked at asap dsg box has known problem with 3rd 4th gear my m8s went in his dsg a3 3000 quid to get fixed only 30k on clock aswell!!!!!!

That depends upon it is the same gearbox. The difference us that it is tranverse in the A3 but the A4 has a longitude one..

The ABS sounds happen everytime the car is started and running (at a straight line) and are a series of 3 or 4 "clunks", not only one.

On my two LHD B9s, it comes from the left hand side (near side for UK/Oz) foot well.

I'm pretty sure on RHD the unit is located at the same place, so it maybe harder for you to hear it if you're in the UK.

Strange you should say 3-4 clunks as mine only does one and it doesn't matter if I am in a straight line of not, it is always at the same speed.
It is in the same place and you can hear it..

Spent 10 minutes in 1/2/3rd (“joy” of traffic and 20mph zones) - no noise until clear and as soon as went up to 4th, ‘clunk’...

Hi @cuke2u it may sound like one, but it's a rapid series of several.

I would say 3 clunks in a row.

I am pretty sure it's from the LHD driver's footwell (left side of the car, so my side)

I'm pretty sure it doesn't happen until 27mph, try holding a gear until then and see what happens.

Hi there. Just bought my Audi A4 b9 2016, and noticed excactly the same Sound as you. Have you found out what it could be causing
The problem?
Thanks, that is a good idea - I’ll give it a try!

Hi there
My car (Audi A5 67 plate, 48000 miles) is doing this exact thing. From D4 to D5 but only at the start of my journey and then never again unless turned completely off and back on. I saw a transmission specialist today who said he didn’t believe it was a problem with my gear box. Did you get to the bottom of this. I’m worried it’s going to cost me a fortune. Thank you

Hi there,
I’m having this issue with my 67 plate A5. Did you find out what it was causing this sound?

Has anyone had any updates or new ideas about this as my 2017 tdi 147 a4 has started also making this sound, no jumps or slipping
