Next model A3

I've just given my Mk 7 Golf GTI PP back for an A3 1.5 tfsi! I LOVE the interior of the A3..LOVE LOVE the B&O system and Stronic but god i do miss my GTI. Different animals performance wise, the Golf was on a par with my previous car which was a Megane 275 cup handling wise, it was incredible with the LSD. I'm only seeing the A3 I have as a 'luxury' item, not a performance car and i have to be at peace with that.

Value wise, the GTI for me. The current A3 i have cost £33k! Kudos? A3 (Not S3) or GTI, GTI all day long! The Golf GTI is in it's own league really and i've often had people say they prefer the looks of the GTI to the R.

What boils my pi55 is the options you have to pay for with Audi over standard GTI items. Rear folding bench and lumbar support are just a few but hey ho...I do get amazing LCD lights and dynamic indicators lol

Dynamic sweep indicators and LED headlights are standard on the GTI...

The new BMW 340i looks really smart, 3 litre, 370bhp. 4.4 to 62, x drive, updated interior retaining some manual controls.

On the LEDS, got a new Sline ordered, due January. Are they noticeably better than the xenon's pre facelift?

To look at - yes!

To see in the dark - about the same as the Xenons tbh.

Thanks, looking forward to it. FYI the xenons came out the factory pointing to the ground, hopefully the leds are set correctly from the outset. to get back on topic, thought carefully about getting a face lift or waiting for the next model, face lift won, as like others, Im not sure about the Audi design direction, but if I like it, I'll jump on a face lifted next model.

The led lights on the Golf are as bright / effective as the FL Audi ... I think they must be the same unit just a different ‘look’ to each.

The s3 holds its money better BUT I’ve raced against my friends new s3 in my 16 plate gtipp and he couldn’t get round me also he couldn’t pull away either, on a dry twisty road I happily keep with it, on a wet road I have to seriously work hard as the s3 just fires off the corner!

Once rolling, most performance cars are pretty much the same on public roads. Corners can only be taken at certain speeds (unless you're being silly) given the widths of UK roads. Straights are not very long (unless on a dual carriageway) so any power advantage is negligible.

On a twisty backroad an S3 will keep up with an RS3. Both will take the corner at the same speed, and you'll need a long straight to open out an advantage (if the RS3 is in front) and then you have traffic to contend with. Where the RS3 will have the advantage of being able to accelerate that bit quicker past the car in front. But unless risks are taken, both car will get from A to B to the same time.

Same for the argument DSG is quicker. Quicker than what? Any road in the UK, the DSG S3 and the manual S3 will arrive at point B at the same time. So what's quicker? 0-60? Amazing !!!

To the S3 V GTI. Having owned both, the GTI is the better drivers car, and is the more fun car to drive. The S3 has a slightly nicer interior (though there's nothing wrong with the Golfs interior) but the GTI has better seats. But the S3 is the better all-year-round car given its AWD system. But then throw the Golf R into the equation ..........

Options on the Golf are just silly though. In the S3 S/S leather seats are about £800 (if I remember correctly) yet if you want leather on the Golf, it's £1750. Bonkers. The Golf is also by far the more annoying car. An overactive collision avoidance system that decides to hit the brakes when the car in front is close (but you know you're ok) which was always interesting when turning round a round-about. The sports steering setting that just weighed the steering up to stupidly fake levels. And the truly awful fake engine sound pumped through the speakers. A let to like about the GTI, but the annoyances spoil the overall experience.

Yeah I said the same about the leather next time I’d stick to plaid and get a proper retrim! I set my car to individual so that you don’t get the fake engine noise and the steering isn’t heavy and that makes it nice, also mines never slammed on the anchors but then I don’t tend to get too close

Dash is iffy... the video is the same for all the 0 - xxx tests this guy does.

I’d like to see one of these in the flesh, I’m not sure it’s any worse than what Audi are releasing.

Merc interiors just look so chintzy though. Hardly oozes class to match the badge.

I have to concur with @TYb

I don't mind the Merc interior / dash .. Yes it is minimalist but I would much prefer that to the cluttered look of the new A1 with loads of angles and vents all over the place ... & the early shots of the next platform A3/S3 suggest this may carry over a similar theme ... lets hope not :sadlike:

I know what you mean but as per above the latest offering on the new A1 isn’t any better than the Merc and that’s bound to be reflected in the next A3.

I am surprised the A35 doesn’t have a bit more power knowing a new S3 will be out 1-2 years. May be circa 300 is the balance for the new wltp tests.

If they made it more powerful then there will be less of a reason to buy the more powerful a45 when that comes out.
Similar to the s3 to rs3. Probably why they limit boost in the s3 1st and 2nd gear so the rs3 has a more noticeable better 0-60.
0-60 is a bit irrelevant nowadays. Manufacturers can easily tweak the gearing and with fast dsg or auto boxes they can achieve sub 5 second 0-60 with little effort.
To me real test is 0-100 or 60-100+.

Any news yet on when the new A3 will officially be launched next year or if there will be any special edition run out models of the current platform ?

Audi don't do special run out editions as you well know mate lol
Geneva Motor show in March will be the venue for its launch, so not long now

Isn't there some sort of "show" in March each year*? That's normally when Audi show new stuff eg the FL RS3 etc last year?

TX.

*Geneva?

Thought I’d share

I've watched a few reviews of this car the engine sound is rather weak, it looks better in darker paint colours and also without the aero kit, the optional super sport seats look okay..... BBut as always most cars in these reviews are fully loaded but to be honest it's aimed at the Ford Focus ST/RS type of peeps, the all new 1/2-series will be here soon, then the new A3 so plenty new cars to choose from for those peeps who are ready to change cars

Possibly March then.
Just all seems to have gone quiet from Audi in the news so wondred if it was delayed.
I thought they sometimes did special editions - I recall the mark 2 TT had a couple of run out models with special paint and equipment.

Could be ... I've just shod mine with brand new rubber on all 4 corners - so gotta get my use outa that before any change considered though lol

Oh look another 300 odd bhp smallish car with launch control, goes about the same speed as all the other 300 odd bhp smallish cars with launch control.
Is is the new Focus or the new A class........not sure.
Awful dash both in design and graphics, for me being a middle aged bloke the pops and bangs are ridiculous & who really likes that stuff? 4cyl engines making those noises is nonsense.
Doesn't feel long before cars will steer themselves, then what will the nice Germanic sounding glove wearing man have to do?
Gives me no reason whatsoever for changing my 3dr manual S3 stage1. Having had a play in the middle of rural France with an RS4 owning mate and his 911 GT3 owning mate I can categorically say that the only difference between the two is how far the driver is willing to push his licence/luck/talent as power isn't really so relevant when the road isn't a race track.

Rant over, been a frustrating morning :(

p.s. just looked at the Audi configurator, 'base' S3 sback now £36.3k, my S3 4yrs back with 2k of extras was £29.7k.........holy moly. Car manufacturers need to do something different.......all getting a bit boring really.

Yeah I think that was it. Special colours, extra kit, jazzy seats, fixed spoiler etc.
Was it green and orange paint ?

I'm just interested to see what the final design will be - especially inside.
Not in any rush to change at all - for the first time ever !
I'm gonna need to investigate what an MOT is come March next year lol ? :)

Or possibly The Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Mot.... At least you still really like your car .. ... Nothing worse than hanging on to a car that you don't like and besides you could possibly make a few shillings when you come to sell it on
Well like it's already been mentioned the new A3 will be very similar inside to the new Q3 fact, it'll also resemble the all new A1 in its exterior like the spy shots have hinted at Fact ... It'll be a disappointment Fact lol

I might be holding onto my car even longer than March 20 then.
Unless something comes along which really grabs my attention ... but nothing on the radar at the moment.

I thought about and test drove a few other cars BUT I ended up coming back to the S3, there is just something about the S3 that gives me the warm fuzzy feeling.

Decision time... just been offered a new S3 with 3k deposit contribution and a further 2.5k discount. £34,897. Good deal or should I go for the GTI? I’d love a GTI but something about the Audi brand keeps pulling me back, despite the GTI being plenty quick enough with much lower running costs and a lot more kit as standard.

Would fully agree with all the pops and farts from the exhaust. Just silly.

The new A-Class will brake and steer if it detects (thinks) you're either going in too hot, or thinks you'll miss the corner. We're getting closer and closer to fully autonomous cars. Yet Joe public will lap up these systems.

Most car's will keep up with anything else these days, so not surprised an RS4 kept a GT3 honest. And S3 can keep and RS3 honest. and so on and so forth. Just look at 0-60 times. Your average hot hatch is getting under 5 second. An RS3 can do it in 3.7 seconds.

Hope the exterior doesn't look like the current A1 or Q3, as both look awful.

Hope the interior doesn't look like the new A1, as that looks awful too.

From someone who has owned both, the GTI will be more fun, but the S3 is the far better car.
