I have had the oil level sensor defective warning on my dash for a couple of months. It is on permanent and stops me from using the driver info system (and stops me selecting tracks on my iPod) Of course this happened just after I got the car serviced.

Today I bought fresh long life oil, filter and a sensor from ECP and fitted them. Messy job but not the worse. Re-connected the battery and all was good oil temp was reading and no warning. I checked for leaks then put the engine undertray back on and drove along my street to turn the car and now the sensor warning is back.
Any suggestions as to what the deal is? Or any suggestions to why this has happened? Broken wire? Bad sensor?
Any advice appreciated as I want to torch the car right now!

Bonnet catch can be faulty/dirty and not resetting. or check the fuses on the end of the dashboard one of the top ones can go.
Also, check the wiring near the air con pump, that can break too

Thanks mate-The bonnet catch does that show as the bonnet is open all the time or not?
Already checked the fuses-all good.
Is it the sensor wiring that runs near to the air con pump? And can you describe where that is on the 8P

Spent the day under the car tracing wires and check and there are no obvious damage to any wiring.
I disconnected the battery and the warning goes away but only for the initial start. One the second start it’s back.

I don’t understand why when it was initially fitted it read the oil temp. but now all I get is two dashes....
The only thing I can think of is to buy a genuine Audi Sensor at £100.....which I would do if I was sure it was going to work.....but don’t want to do that in case it’s something else that’s not right.....

Any further thoughts?

Buy an OEM from Audi or TPS fit it if it works cool if it doesn't take it back telling them the problem sorted itself . Worth trying

Ha ha I’d like to see the parts boys face when I take back the sensor after it had been fitted (and covered I oil) unfitted? Of course......

Guess you've never heard off cleaning products lol.
My mate used to do it to B+Q all the time if he needed a tool for a 1 off job never was refused his money back always paid cash but he did have a fair set off :footy::footy:

I just had this as well. The brown was snapped right at the bonnet catch so replaced the whole unit. Problem solved

Can you post up a photo of where the wire is up at the bonnet catch? And what unit did you replace? The bonnet catch or the sensor?

I'd have to take the catch out to get that photo. Yes I replaced the bonnet catch. It's a kit with all wiring and clips from TPS

Ok so been running the car for a few months with the yellow oil can and the shrill Beeeeeep every time I start up the car. Had enough and sat and went through all of the fuses in both fuse boxes. Found fuse no 7 (5A) in the side of the dash to have blown! Eureka I think I’ve found it!!
New fuse and disconnect battery for 10 minutes and reconnects and starts the car!
No warning and check oil temp and it’s showing the actual oil temp on the display!!!

For about 30 seconds then it’s back to the 3 dashes (instead of the temperature) and the warning.

Any clue why this is happening?

Street triple i have the same problem, checked everything i can check and got a new sensor and its still saying sensor defective. Its driving me mad.

Just to let you know i found my problem, the signal wire was broken where it clips into the little bracket that holds the wire before the plug for the sensor, i was belling the wires out and that was the only one that didnt, there is a 6 pin plug by the passenger side headlight that the 3 wires go to, you can test them from there. Little *******, anyway its all sorted now thank god! Hope this helps.

Mate have you got a picture of where your wire was damaged im having.the exact same problem its burning my head out ive checked everything and cant find nothing obvious with wires or any the sensors

It wont let me upload any pictures says its too large. Its where the wire clips onto the bracket. But really you need to test the wires. There is a 6 pin plug clipped to the chassis just bellow the passenger headlight, you can see it with everything in situation. 3 of those wires are from the sensor.
