Today I attempted to change the reverse light switch and brake switch......brake switch nice and easy like the clutch, reverse light switch....what a pain.
Unless you have tiny hands its a real pain to get at , even less room to get at the stupid locking audi electrical plug....arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
So in case you need to do it, you'll need small hands to start with or remove both exhaust downpipe mounting brackets, then struggle to get the plug off , then you'll need a 22mm ring spanner or deep socket, apart from that its fine....

All done , went out for a test drive and 100 yards up the road and the ABS failure light is on now.....and wont clear even after restarts, what is it with this car now....
Seriously looking at off loading it at the present rate of problems that are growing daily now.

Rob what i find strange is how all these parts seem o have just failed at once. The other thing is i know you look after the old bus extremely well, i find it so odd.

I know dani, it's all a bit bonkers.
The only common connection is that I cleaned the MAF sensor on Friday afternoon and didn't use the car until sat morning.
first thing when I started up was parking sensors bleeping and reverse lamps were stuck on., had an ABS lamp flash once.
So changed both switch's today , only to then get ABS & ESP lights stuck on.
Removed the brake switch and refitted it and that cleared the ABS but not the ESP still on, but the ESP is working.
All very odd frankly , I do know that the ABS, ESP and brake switch are connected along with a shed load of other bits, possibly just an oddity.
I've run vcds again and nothing showing but ESP is still on , not sure what's happened to the strange transmission error either.
Another odd one is that as soon as I drove the car on sat morning the fuel consumption dropped massively , so possibly the maf is knackered , cant see how the maf would influence the other issues though but i'm open to any answers to help clear things up.

and now there's oil from the back of the valve cover.....its been one of those week's dani.

The thing is Rob the 8e isnt best know for its quality electronics, just looking at the door looms for instance or the fact that if 1 parking sensor is faulty it takes the whole system down.

Regarding the maf cleaning, id say the maf is dead, that fact that your fuel consumption has dropped is a sign of a dying or dead maf.

What did you use to clean it?

You dont have to tell me mate, just look at the issues im having haha, ooh and the parking sensors have started playing up again for me haha.

Yep, totally agree Dani, just gets all a bit depressing really but I suppose I could go out buy another used german car tomorrow and get just as much grief, sometimes better the devil you know .

I used halford electical contact cleaner on the maf.

Is your charging system ok Rob? Lots of odd and unrelated electrical faults can sometimes point to a battery or alternator fault. Especially around this time of year when it starts getting cold.

So today has been productive!

I changed over my cam follower (the car sounds like it’s running quieter now), changed the clutch switch to resolve the Rev hanging issue on gear change (thanks justrob!) and installed an arm rest - woohoo

Beer time.

Well today the S4 got a new Valeo rear wiper motor to stop it randomly parking all over the place on the rear window which was driving me mad. The old motor was already a replacement of the cheap variety and some chuff bag has ruined the washer pipe which I've done a temporary repair on but will need sorting properly when I've decided what to do about it. Then I decided to see what terror was lying in my scuttle panel under the battery as I returned to a heavily misted window in the middle of the afternoon the other day so as its impossible to use the reach around method to clear the drains on a V8 I stripped out the battery and covers and cleared them properly. One is under the servo so I had to just get my hands in there and scoop out the crud and give that bung a fingering to clear it, Its now also Got a new steering wheel with alloy radio buttons and tip paddles. I've also located two annoying rattles/ creaks which came down to a cd resting on top of the cd changer in the glovebox which someone must have mistakenly forced into the gap above the changer and the rear load cover was creaking like mad when closed which was sorted using some cloth insulation tape wrapped neatly around the posts that locate in the trims in the boot when its pulled closed, Audi use this method on other parts of the car to stop creaks so I'm happy enough with it.
I also have a pile of tyres to go on and a pair of new rack arms and track rod ends as its been advised on a few recent MOT's for inner joint wear but apparently it cant fail for it????? I'm hoping that will be the source of a noise I get over rough ground but we'll see.

Happy to get some small jobs done though!

Yeah, think I uncovered more jobs than I sorted but you've got to focus on the little victories!

Im glad you've sorted the rattling luggage cover as mine is driving me crazy! Is your new wheel the same as mine?

Yep its a much better place to be without the creaks and rattles. The wheel is a B8 S4 item so similar to yours with the buttons and silver stitching but smooth leather all the way round which kind of fits better since the auto shifter is smooth too.

Today I tackled the leaking PCV delete plate , I was aware that is was leaking along the top edge near the front but upon removing it today it seems to have been leaking in several places, which is not ideal frankly and very disapointed with it really , and worse still R-tech never replied back to my contact to them about the quality of the plate, it looks spot on but fit is terrible, the seal is about as good as a hole in a ship's hull.
Working on the basis that its a sealed system , if oil can get out in several places , then so can air etc thus lower effective vacuum to draw spent oil laden air around the setup.
I've made a temp fix with some instant gasket , but will be refiiting with some a new custom plate that will actually work properly now.

checked all my plugs again and they were all normal colour etc, nothing abnormal.

inner cv joints changed, this was the better side, grease came out like oil. did these to find the outer cvs and bearings are also shot . . . . . . 170k though on the originals

Did you ever get around to checking out that Vac pump leak Rob?

Not taken it off yet but had a good look and oil is seeping out from around the joint but I have a plan organised to solve it.

sun was out again today so a chance to wash and blow dry the old bus, an she cleans up very well for an old girl....
Ran a full vcds check and all is good , so that's a relief, also did some data logging for the MAF so will upload for anyone interested in the result for a BUL stage 1 tune.
