Hi Ladies And Gents

Is it worth getting the r8 coil pack for my s3?

Being a electronic engineer what's the difference between these and the standard ones.

Tia

Mike

They are cheaper (apparently) and have slight differences, but for the most part they work fine and are RED.

Ok you can’t really say ‘slight differences’ - this is a man of science he dreams about uncovering slight differences. Slight differences could give him 1bhp extra and that gives him the edge on all the other family hatches on the road. Lay down the readies, test em both and let us know ...

Do I look like a car parts tester?
I'm aware that there are differences but I do not know what they are, or how to test them. I would suggest that the person wanting to change them should find out for themselves, rather then me being expected to replace perfectly healthy coil packs with a new set for someone else's benefit?!

It doesn't need to have R8 etched on them, they are RED to distinguish them.
Huh? But if I’m sharing pics of my engine bay on Instagram only those in the know will know - and that’s no good! I need to let everyone know my family hatch as a super car inside ... well 0.0001 of a supercar ...

TBH your Coils will be covered up with a engine cover

Use the hastag #R8coilpacks and then everyone who doesn't care will know, and those that already know won't really care.
Everyone is equally non impressed.

what about the people who don't know what #R8coilpacks means? Think we need another hashtag for them: #Ifittedsomeaudipartstomyaudibuttheyweresuppiosedtogoinamoreexpesiveaudisomyaudiisevenbetterthanyouraudiunlessyoursactuallyisamoreexpensiveaudithenyoursisstillbetter

Really....

You got the actual answer, then a few people ran with it and had a bit of fun. I honestly can't see a problem!

Would be a very boring forum if Admin did as you ask "sort this out!!!!!"

Chill your beans mate, if you don'y like our answers you can always ask an Audi dealer.
There is a slight difference. They are red in colour. They do work in our cars. They are apparently cheaper.
What else did you want to know?

That's the problem with new members, they don't ask specific questions and get shirty if people don't provide the answer, or have a laugh.
Admin need to sort this out!!!

Or we could all just get along and play nice?

@MikeStrachan - Mike, there is mention that the R8 coilpacks have a slightly stronger spark but other than that there is no real performance gain. Most upgrade to them (including me) for cosmetic reasons.

Of course a stronger spark is on advantageous if the std spark is inadequate :) I thought you had a TT engine cover Sam :)

not to bust anyone's ball but if you sport the red coils then at least try and switch out the oil dipstick and the bottle cap. go big or go home...
the red ones come standard and this engine don't need no dipstick or cap as most cars are eating its dust to need to show it off.

I have read that the red coil packs are more reliable than the standard version. So where the originals may break down in time causing a misfire this seems less of a problem with the genuine R8 version.

I followed an old R8 today down the Roman road at Five oaks, didn't seem much quicker than my S3 TBH :) whatever colour his coil packs were :)

My coil packs are 7 years old and not broken down yet, probably get the r8 ones though when they need changing, you just expect Audi to Chuck their best ones in their best motor???

Once someone has found a definite answer to the question posted, me thinks i will stick with the more expensive coil packs and that ain't going to be the R8 ones .As they say, you only get what you paid for :thumbs up::thumbs up::thumbs up:

Would the r8 coilpack be any better with a bluefin stage 2 tune? Anyone got experience with this?

A coilpack is a coil pack, whether it’s red or black just make sure it’s genuine, not eBay crap.

If you have stg2 you should look to change your plugs to NGK BKR7EIX.
