Basils had a S3X change :D

WD40 and a grey (finest) scotchbrite pad .
It’s been soaking for a week with a rag over it , plastic scraper to loosen the carbon , hoovered it off and lots of elbow grease .
Still got the outside to do but saving that for when it hasn’t got loads of holes all over the place , as most of the ancillary dare coming off the engine that still has n the car

Good old WD40! Good effort, looks really clean my engine is in dyer need of cleaning, PCV splits over the months prior to it coming off the road has coated everything in sludge oil muck

Heads finally back , field aren’t quick but are VERY good !
The 3 week wait was blamed on several WRC engines taking longer than anticipated and I let him off as I got a tour of the premises , some MUCHO cool stuff in there :) e.g a fully freighted BDT from an RS200
Anyway , top job I think and not expensive :D
Specs from Bentley state an unskimmed head will be 140.00mm

Cool , so never touched before .
On collection I noticed that it hadn’t been skimmed so questioned why and he said I knew you’d ask .
It’s straight as a die (even put it on his straight edge and showed me)
Winner :)

Looking nice now :D

Weirdly field handed me these and said here you go you left these in !

I had no idea they were there , discovered when they changed the guides .
There’s 8 so must be exhaust valve spring seats , which led to some concern as to where the inlet ones are as I didn’t take any out and they didn’t either .
This led to a bit of homework for me which led me here .

Number 18 on etka .

It states the only 18 is outlet (exhaust) only .
Panic over :)

tell me you have refitted the lower spring shim on exhaust valves
Bill , I have refitted the lower spring shim on the exhaust valves :)
To be truthful, I haven’t actually as I’m still lapping the valves in , only 4 to go :D
But I will be .
Thanks for the input to potentially save a massive fail though :)

Finally a day to get the engine back together !
Head on , half hours research on sequence and torques and angles .
Decided on wet , 40nm twice , 60nm twice BANG !!!
WTF was that ?

C U next Tuesday :wtf:

No Ian .
The 1st round (40nm) went well , no jerking or creaking , 60nm was going well nice and smooth , felt like it was just about to click off on the torque wrench then bang !
I double checked the setting on the wrench and was spot on , so out of curiosity tried the next bolt and that went fine !
Bolt flaw is my guess ?
I’ve come this far cost wise so what’s another £200 on ARP studs !
Or £69 less is ARP bolts , anyone know if the studs are £60 better ? Both reusable so I can’t really se what the difference is !
Lastly “yes” the bolt holes were clear of water and oil , I’d cleaned them out with brake cleaner and an air line .......
These things are sent to try us ;)

Technically a stud shouldn't twist along its length as a bolt does when tightened, which will give a more accurate torque figure. In actuality the difference is often negligible under most conditions so the bolts are likely plenty man enough, however, studs would be the final step in doing things as "right" as possible if that makes sense.

I've not kept an ear out for failure rates on these - would be interesting to hear whether the likes of Bill & Co have seen much difference, if any, between the two.

Well you're way past the halfway mark when you're at the point of getting the head back on - easy peezy from here!!!

Strange, mine went in with no problems at all. I'll check what settings were used. Could be a an issue with the bolt, concentrating the strain that would ordinarily be dealt with the bolt stretching, on that one point and then boom. no signs of damage? What do the sheared ends of the bolt look like?

It had twisted where it broke and as about half diameter of the rest of it .
I’ve checked bolt length , hole cleanliness, the torque wrench , all checks out .
Must have been a flaw !
Buying ARP in a couple of weeks

Errrrrrm I don’t know !
I wasn’t aware there were threads in the head !
The bolt has broken halfway down where it screws into the block .
I’m in Ireland (work) at the moment so will look on my return .
I blimmin hope not !!!!!
