8v Steering Wheel On 8p

I know there's a diagram in a few posts above on how to convert 8K airbag wiring to 8P but I suspect it will be different for 8W.

Do you think this can be repined just by having a wiring diagram (bentley manual or similar) or would it be relatively easy just to eyeball which wire goes where in the airbag and replicate it to match 8P?

http://www.project-build.net/chapter/834/steering-wheel-upgrade
I found this DIY even though steering wheel is similar it has a different (single staged) airbag and the guy does not explain where he got the rewiring part from.

thanks again,

No idea mate, sorry.

Hello guys,

I am new in this forum, so I apologize from now if I will make not relevant questions. I red the earlier posts and you guys got really nice skills and knowledge here .

So I got an Audi A3 Sportback, 8PA, 2.0 TDI 16v, year: end of 2005. I have DSG gearbox with shift paddles. My steering wheel came with shift paddles but without multi function buttons.
The steering wheel control module PN is: 8P0 953 549 A. I guess my airbag is a dual stage one.
Now the control module ending is A ( not F and not K how I red in the earlier posts ). I checked with VCDS and in the coding section at the helping list I could find the coding for multifunction steering wheel for radio/telephone/voice control operation.

Now my question is: could I make a retrofit with a new steering wheel and multi function buttons worikng ?
If yes, what should you suggest guys to buy.

Br.

You need to upgrade the steering control module and code it.
You will also need a wheel with mf buttons, if you choose to keep the same shape wheel to reuse the airbag you will need the airbag loom with the mf connector.

Hello,

I would like to get a new wheel with new shape, could be the flat bottom one.
Do you mean that with the current control module i cannot retrofit any steering wheel with MF buttons ?
If it’s not possible the upgrade to a new wheel with the current configuration of the car, it would be possible to buy a same steering wheel with shift paddles as mine but with MF buttons ?.... Same airbag same configurations but with MF buttons

Mf will only work with an upgraded control module
Ok I understand. Which part number of control module should I buy in order to maintain the padleshifter for DSG gearbox, and to have additional the MF woriking ?
How can I code the new control module with VCDS ?...or I just need to select the number regarding to the MFSW in the steering wheel coding list.

Thank you.

If i mind in the post it tells you what version off Module you would need to upgrade too if you didn't have the correct one but off hand i can't honestly mind

Yes that’s a good point, but in my case I have a DSG automatic gearbox with paddle shifter at the steering wheel. Or this aspect is not relevant for the version of the control module that I need to upgrade for MFSW ?

No expert but i don't think it would make a difference as long as the new module could talk to Ecu without a problem and if new module had the function for the MFSW as hopefully within the coding it would mention the paddles. Maybe worth asking around if people with an younger car than your one who have the mfsw with paddles what module they have at least then you know what module has this function but you will need to make sure your ecu would take it

Oh yes that’s would be very helpful to me. Before buying a flat bottom MFSW or any kind of newer steering wherl, at first I need to know what Part Number should be the control module to upgrade to. If there is anyone who could help me with this information....it would be helpful.

Thank you.

You need the module that ends with F as that is a high line module. Also you need a different airbag connector as ash said.

Once that’s done then you can get a flat bottom wheel from an a3 that will be a straight swap or you can get a newer wheel from an a4 or A5 but then the airbag connector will need repinning, of which all the instructions are in this thread. You can’t use a wheel from an 8v a3 as the buttons will not work.

Hello,

Ok. So if I understood correctly, after upgrading the control module to F ending, than:

Posibility 1: to buy for example a flat bottom MFSW form a newer A3 or S3 with the regarding airbag than I could do a straight swap without any modifications, just plug and play ?

Posibility 2: or get a newer wheel from A4/A5 with the regarding airbag, just need to repin it’s connector ?

Regarding to the slip ring...i can use my actual slip ring with the upgraded control module (F ending) ?

Thank you.

That’s correct.
You will however have to code the mfsw functions with vcds.
I’m not sure about the slip ring but when I did mine on a 2007 model I never changed the slip ring.

Ok, I understand. Thank you very much and also many thanks to ash for the help.
When I buy the new MFSW (the year must be below 2010 or it could be also after 2010 ?) the airbag must be dual stage one, or it could be single stage regarding to that specific steering wheel ?

there are literally loads of options you have.
your car has a dual stage airbag, I can fit the new 2018 A5 wheel into your car and have it working but its not easy or cheap.
You need the F module for the steering controller. The slip ring should be fine but if you run into issues you want the D rev slip ring
if you go for any of the 8P wheels you wont need any pinning or airbag plugs.
If you go for the A5 wheels you will need to modify the airbag plug and repin the plug. Do not buy an A3 8V (2013+) wheel as the buttons will not work.
If you want the newer A5 wheels to work message me as you will need a custom module which I sell.

I will think about it and surly I will contact you if I go for a newer A5 wheel.

Hey Guys,

I have read through this post and and wanted to retrofit the later design S-Line Steering Wheel to my 2004 Audi A3 without MFSW.

I have now bought following parts and with coding it all should be quite working straight forward right?

Audi A4 8K S-Line Steering Wheel with Lowline Buttons:
S l1600

Airbag from A3 8V Single Stage: 8V0880201CH
Steering Wheel Control Module: 1K0953549F
Airbag Slipring: 1K0959653D

You need the 8P0 control module. Also your airbag will not fit - look at the mounting holes in your steering wheel and compare them with the back of the airbag. Most likely you will need an airbag ending with L instead of CH.
Also don't forget to repin the airbag harness - pinout is somewhere around this forum.

Got that one now ordered mate

Ok, the L comes up as an Q3 Airbag - is that right? Couldn't find any guidance on the Airbag so went for the next best with the CH, but once it's here I will compare the mounts and give an update.

I have found a repin on the airbag harness on one of the first posts but couldn't find one for the single stage retrofit :sadlike:

Just noticed how dumb I was and not looking at the auction pictures, clearly different mounts, the CH having 3 Point Mount and the Steering Wheel has 4 Point Mount :sorry: so now checking for the L once or for those who have 4 Point Mount, but did all A3/Q3 Airbags came with Single Stage Airbag?

I have now spoken to @Ash187 and gonna bring it down to him to sort it out for me.

See it pays to go to the right people and have it done that way it is done correctly with no errors and looks Sh*t hot at the end , nice one

yea, so true get it done once but properly done - just thinking if to go with the A4 Sline Wheel of the B8 or the B9 and use the Airbag I have got now at home.

If your air bag fits both then if it was me i would go with the 2nd pic , but best advice to get is chat to @Ash187 and he will tell you whats the best way especially if he is fitting it for you

B8 and B9 airbags are totally different
Also B8 wheel buttons light up red whereas B9 lights up white... that’s what puts me off fitting one on my own car.
And finally B8 wheels are cheaper to fit as B9 needs the custom module on top.
If you need a B8 airbag I can source one as I have suppliers for those.

Hello guys

I got audi s3 8v steering wheel on my 2004 a3 8p , single stage airbag.

I did the repin on the airbag connector and got no airbag lights so far , all good.

Im now looking forward to get these buttons working , but ive got High line buttons ( LIN2.0) , i will need LIN 1.3 Buttons.

Will 4L0951523C work ? are these buttons LIN 1.3?

Thanks

Hello guys

Before i start i want to say sorry for my bad English . (I can understand and read English well, but I cannot write English well)
I do my best with google translator.

I have read this topic several times .

I have a 2003 a3 3.2 quattro 8P with single stage airbag . (No mfsw)

The parts that i have and going to use should work right ?

Part that i have on the car now
Cruise control 8P0953513B (installed)
Steerring Wheel module 8P0953549 (Needs replacement)
Slipring 1k0959653 (Needs replacement)

Parts that i already purchased
Steeringwheel with Lowline buttons 4L0419091AC
Audi a3 8v airbag 8V0880201AG
Airbag wiring (Audi a3 8v) 8U0971589C

Parts that i have to buy
Steering Wheel module 8P0953549F
Slipring 1k0959653D

The only thing I don't understand is what i have to repin .
The diagram on page 2 is for a dual stage and i have a single stage airbag and wiring loom from the audi a3 8v .
I want to know for sure what to repin before something goes wrong.

Thanks

Hi guys,

I got a 8V steering wheel from 2014 with a single stage airbag. I love to have it on my Audi A3 2010. So this is the thing, my Audi A3 steering is a 8P Dual stage airbag. I can buy a Dual stage airbag for the 8V steering wheel, its the 8K airbag thats fit. I have the diagram for the 8P and i gonna use the wright plug so it fits on the clock spring. If i do the pin out wright should it works? And i was wondering if the car give some issues with the airbag?

Dont worry about the buttons, i have a android radio with canbus.

I hope you can help me!

The buttons will not work at all if you get a wheel from a 8V.
Just get a wheel from an A4 or A5 and then it will be much easier as the buttons will work and the airbag will work as they use a dual airbag. If my memory is right I think they just need a couple of pins swapping on the airbag connector.
Getting a wheel from an 8V A3 is pointless

Aah oke! Me steering wheel is a '8U0419091 B' it whas a good deal, and i was thinking if i buy a duals stage airbag thats fits in it, it works right. I can buy a airbag from a A4 dual stage thats fit. And ofcourse i gonna rewired the multifunctionals that it works.

Yes if that airbag will fit that wheel you have bought then that will work fine after you’ve changed the pins over in the airbag connector but then you will have a steering wheel with some buttons that you can’t use. If you can get an A4 or A5 wheel to match the airbag then the buttons will work also as they are different buttons compared to an 8V steering wheel.

ah oke. And if i say that i not having a Audio radio but a android one, with canbus? Universal one thats fit for the Audi a3. Thanks for youre help.

That would make no difference.
The buttons on a Audi A3 8V steering wheel aren’t compatible with an Audi A3 8p. However if you get the wheel from an A4 or A5 then the buttons on those wheels are compatible with an Audi A3 8p. If you look closely and compare the buttons on those 2 types of wheels then you will see they are different.

Yes, oke thanks! that make sense. I gonna search for the right one! :)

Car is a 2007 S3 8P. Fitting an B8 A4 8k airbag and lowline wheel.

Did the difficult bit of getting the relevant pins out safely, but before I commit and go ahead to put them into the correct position as per the wiring diagram earlier in this thread - i just wanted to confirm that this plug will fit the slip-ring connector?

and that by 're-pinning', you guys didn't mean: remove all the pins and swap connector with the 8P one?

Wouldn't be possible to even attempt this mod without this thread so thanks for everyone that posted. (an example of why forum > facebook groups imo)

From what I an see in the picture your already cut the connector on the side so it will fit in perfectly. Just move the pin's that are not in the correct location to their respective locations for the A3 and plug it in , done :)

Here you go. It's not A4 B7 wheel. I used a plug from A4 B7 only (the right one on my previous photo) which I shaved to fit the A3 slip ring connector.

The steering wheel that I installed was sold to me as A4/A5/Q5 steering wheel without any mention of a car it came from. I guess it was taken off a Q5 as I never saw a steering wheel of this design (with a hole and polished plastic frame in a middle/lower spoke). I chose it because of this design. It looks better in person. However, another wheel is on the way to me and I will have to choose one of the two when it arrives.

Hello, where did you get the multimedia that is installed in your audi?
