Hi all.

I'm having a bit of a nightmare with Audi main dealers at the minute regarding the above service.
The car is now at 46k miles and 6 years so I want to get the belt replaced.

All other service work is done myself however I always like belts done by dealers. So I've rang my three locals and all are miles apart with two not even knowing what belt it was.

1st dealer emailed straight back saying the S/C belt, parts, labour and VAT was approx £124. Can't remember the exact figures.

Second said I had to speak to parts as it wasn't on the service system. Parts quoted £310 for the belt, labour and VAT (1.5 hours labour I believe).

Finally the third I had to speak to a service manager as her computer was showing only a V-belt at £114 parts labour VAT and she couldn't confirm if it was the right belt.
The service managed finally got back and quoted now £418 for the charger belt all in.

Can anyone confirm which is right? Considering the engines been about for severally years now I can't believe they don't know what they're even quoting.

Thanks.

The supercharger belt is part number 06E903137AB. Also known as a 7PK 1270 belt. It's dead easy to do yourself when the car is in the service position. I paid around £35 from tps for the genuine belt

Ginge247, I keep thinking about replacing the belt on my S4, but never got any further than just thinking, yes I know that the front needs pulling out, that should be possible for me and I've had the front bumper off to retro fit front parking sensors, so almost half way into the front being moved out.

Parts, I thought that you needed a new belt and a new pulley bolt, then while in there I'd think that it makes sense to replace the auxiliary belt as well, which needs so other parts removed to fit it in?

Good advice on what the service life of the S/C belt and auxiliary belt seems to be a bit vague, but in both cases, I'd rather replace them both before 8 years or 60K miles has passed, with the knowledge that I would have moved the car on before it had got to the next belt change point in its life.

jdp1962, it sounds a lot like Fontain do this work without moving the front of the car into the service position, I've considered trying to do it that way, but then that would still leave the auxiliary belt needing doing in the near future to avoid it breaking up and costing a lot of money.

Edit:- another frustration I've had when dealing with my VW main dealer is, if I have a task that I want them to carry out on my car, and I've worked out that the parts required will not normally be stocked by them, I get them to order these parts in in advance, book the car in for maybe an MOT plus extra work as outlined by me, the normal reply is "yes we can carry out a diagnosis which we will charge you for, and if the parts are not stocked the car will need to be kept in overnight or longer, then we will repair your reported fault" - in that event I said that they will work to my instruction using the parts that I had ordered in via their parts department, it was only a gear linkage oil seal! The job was done while the car was in for its MOT as requested, but only because I pushed the point.

Edit:- I think that you will find that if a requested task is not on their service menu list, then it does not exist in as much as you have no power to request it, stupid, but there you go.

corythorny, I think that you will find this is typical of VW Group main dealerships wrt some model variants, remember that the S4 is just an A4 and one that they do not see very often, they possibly know more about RS models. It is not good to discover that they lack the ability to answer your question easily though, I'd think that quote that included 1.5Hrs labour is the right one and adding the auxiliary belt change in at the same time would make that cost look a lot better, though even a bit higher. Just a story from my experiences of owning a 2000 VW Passat 4Motion which in reality had mainly B5 A4 drive train parts - I booked it in to get its cambelt replaced, service reception, backed up when I complained by a service tech, told me point blank that my engine had a chain and has never ever been fitted with a belt, I explained that that was rubbish as it was fitted with the wide angle Audi 2.8 30V engine, they still would not accept my booking, so I when to a local VW Group Indie specialist who was also on the VW UK website for VW Group local servicing, they accepted the car and did that job for me! Once again, to a VW dealer, a Passat 4Motion was a rare car - though maybe not as rare as a Passat W8!

£85 is great but they’re also just over 1.5 hours from me.

I did ask one about then aux’ belt and tensioner but they said they don’t recommend it. I expect to keep the car maybe another year. They said if I have had any issues or noises and I’ve not. So it’s one I will keep an eye on.

I’m in Rutland and unfortunately the only Audi specialist I know of near me aren’t great at all.

I agree. I changed both belts, water pump, idlers, tensioners and crank pulley. May as well go it all whilst in the service position. Again it's all easy to do yourself if you have a basic understanding

Hum, I forgot about the water pump, should give the crank pulley a look-see as well, as well as idlers and tensioners.

I have now found another specialist (Quattro-tech) who seem to have good reviews so I’ll give them a ring too.

Well it's the same part number as the B8 so I would say yes.

Thanks. I know dealers don’t like talking issues like that so I’ll have a good chat with the specialist Tuesday when I’m off work and see what they recommend.

I got my S4 at around 70k and I was keen to change the crank pulley asap. I had one fail on my A5 3.0 tdi at 80k. Luckily no damage as the car was just idling but could have been so much worse as I'd just come off the motorway!

Yeah I appreciate that.

I can see me owning the car for another year or two.

It’s on 46k. I only do about 5k a year and drive pretty steady, garaged without fail too. So doubt I’ll pass 60k in it. However it’s stage 1 from MRC of that matters. However I do drive pretty steady.

Obviously driving it harder will stress it a bit more, especially hard gear changes if it's a manual. It tends to be the heat cycles they go through and road conditions (salt and wet) that deteriorates the rubber between the 2 parts

I drive like miss daisy most the time. Car doesn’t come out in the bad weather so hopefully will be fine.

Like I say will speak to the specialists and hopefully get more sense out of them than the dealers and a bit better input.

Whoops, another fair weather S4 user, just like me! Also never used on short journeys, got a small car for that stuff!

This is true but it's no anymore difficult to do in the 'non service position', with the right tools.
I'll be doing mine along with changing out the crank pulley later in the year. There's a good video over on Audizine which goes through changing the crank pulley and superchager belt without having to put the car in the service position.

Got no chance of changing of the idlers and tensioners of the belts unless it's in the service position. There's no point in just changing the belt and leaving the rest. My belts where the originals and still in decent condition, however the tensioners where rumbling and felt like the bearings had dried out. I agree though m8 if it's just the belt and you don't mind losing some skin on your knuckles then don't bother with the service position haha

Yes true but, Audi won't change the idler nor tensioner as part of their schedule.

You just need the right tools. A serpentine tool, Torx bit and wrench and a set of ramps and bingo. Robert's your fathers brother!

Here's the 'how to' from Audizine.
