Hi all,

Just a quick one....I have to travel along the same road to work every day! And it has just been re surfaced about 3 weeks ago. In the last week I have had TWO stones hit my window. One causing a small chip and the other causing a six inch striation across the passengers side, requiring a replacement windscreen.

My questions are:

1. Is there any benefit to getting a replacement Audi windscreen instead of the manufacture on my insurance company has offered me? The price difference is unreal.

2. With the A3 saloon being a relatively low car to sit in, is the profile more susceptible to stone chips? Or am I just unlucky that I have had to chips in the space of one week.

Cheers in advance,
J

1. I think take the Audi one if you have high beam assist or any other gubbins installed. All these gubbins need recalibrated if I remember right. your insurance appointed(most likely autoglass) might not have the equipment to do this.

2. Think it’s just bad luck mate. The state of our roads is more likely to Blame

Cheer mate,

Well I would have to do direct to AUDI myself for this at a cost of 404 (125 of which my insurance would pay for). So a lot of cash. How do I know if my car has ADAS functionality? Im sure it has an auto dimming rear view mirror if that helps...

Don’t think the rain light sensor needs calibrated but if you have things like high beam assist, sign recognitions and any other assist stuff with a sensor on the back rear view mirror then it will need calibrated.
The hassle this can cause is unreal.
Other option is take the cheap one but make sure the company doing it can calibrate it or convince your insurer to pay Audi to do calibration.

I don't think I have any of that, I will try and check tomorrow, what should I look for in my car? Surely when the insurance check the REG they will know whats needed...

Cheaper windscreen does not have the tinted sunband at the top the screen

Sadly this is in the T&Cs.....think I still have a leg to stand on?

Loss of warranty if not OEM windscreen. I bought an 18 month old A4 and the auto wipers were not working correctly. Took it to the dealers and they said it was a non OEM screen and the sensor needed changing but would not do it under warranty. As Jassy said get the OEM

Thanks guys! I actually rang Audi who said warranty wouldn't be void unless it led to another issue. I.E. what you mentioned she said warrenty would be intact but if a screen got fitted and then the wipers stopped working as a result of poor fitment then they wouldnt do it under warrenty. I guess I would have a hard time proving any issues were unrelated.

At the end of the day the bigger issue is the skill of the fitter / technician . People seem frightened of the generic companies like auto glass and kwikfit .
Get an experienced fitter for either and you are fine . Same as at Audi dealers same rules apply . Autoglass are more than capable of dealing with All Audi models . Get it done , worry if theirs an issue . I think you will be fine . I’ve had several done across different vehicles.

Had mine done by Autoglass earlier this year. They said that they had all the information they needed (from the reg #)
The replacement was fine. Auto wipers and High Beam Assist work fine. And it does have the tinted sun band.
Happy days.

Had my windscreen crack after 400miles, told insurance (Aviva) I expected OEM replacement, said that was not a problem but that I would have to wait for it. Don’t think I waited longer than 2wks though

Just had a peek outside and there’s definitely no sun strip/band on my windscreen. Have I been cheated by Audi?

Mine a my18 BE too. Only had it a month and it was pretty much fresh off the transporter.
It should have it, l don't think it was option of any type like it was on the PFL S3 where you had to option the comfort pack to get the sunband

Mines a pfl 1.4 and has the band. It has comfort pack which includes acoustic screen. Has that got anything to do with it?

It’s got a square ish bit of tinted glass behind the rear view mirror. That’s it.
Had 4 audis and none have had the sun band.

Maybe I have. Never noticed it sitting inside.

I recently got a new screen via Autoglass.
The screen is branded Pilkington and doesn't mention Audi anywhere, came with the sun band and the gubbins front top for the auto sensor and my car has the comfort pack. Haven't noticed any difference in noise or anything else between the screens.
Autoglass appeared to use my VIN to source the appropriate screen.

Just an update for anyone else that is in the same situation...

Auto-glass came today after paying the windscreen excess from my insurance, and they fitted the Pilkington glass which has exactly the same features as the original apart from the four audi rings. The fitter actually confirmed they are exactly the same glass audi just put their brand name on it. I havent had the time to inspect it as much as I would like as I cant move the car for an hour, and its raining :( .......But inital inspections it looks great and you wouldnt notice the different, I can highly recommend.

Also it comes with lifetime guarantee for things like random cracks (not stone chips) and leaks.

I had a 2017 Tiguan r line before my s3 and it had 2 replacement windscreens in 6 months. Made of paper. Had to go to an auto glass centre because it had cameras that needed calibrating afterwards. Both original Vw screens without asking but most important thing for me was the fit was perfect. Not a single mark anywhere and you’d never know it had been touched. Trim, paint, everything perfect. 3 guys work at the Birmingham branch doing screens and I’d prob take my s3 there rather than having done on my drive in future. Was a guy there having his nardo grey rs3 screen replaced and looked pleased with the fitters attention to detail
