Additional battery for dash cam

I've ordered a BlackVue 650 2ch, as I wanted the parking mode feature. However the Power Magic Pro doesn't look like it'll be capable of lasting very long, as I'll be leaving the car for 24 hours sometimes.

I've noticed a few people mention Cellink Battery B - but these are rather pricey on Amazon. Then it struck me. What about using a power bank like Anker with 20,000 (or even higher capacity ones).
As long as they have the IQ charging feature to provide the camera with enough juice, is this a viable option?

Logistically, is it even possible to integrate this into the dash cam setup so it can be used for parking mode and then charge the bank whilst the car is running?

On a good car battery the power magic will last 24 hours or close to it. Remember the camera isnt rolling 24 hours but in park mode and fired up to record on movement etc.

The magic pro can be switched on/ off, so most people have it off ( so it just switches on when car started ) then only flick the switch on for park mode if they pop to the shops or park somewhere not knwon to them. That way battery isnt constantly being drained.

If you want longer recording then yes you will need another battery source and your suggestion sounds fair and viable.

Our resident expert @Rob2k68 has the blackvue like me but also has a battery.

I think the Lithium battery technology/type used in the Cellink (lithium Iron phosphate) is much more tolerant of the extraordinary temperatures you can get inside a car in the sun (or indeed a bad winter), compared to that in a phone recharger pack like the Anker. You risk significantly reduced service life or worse...

Having just changed from a Koonlung k1s to a Thinkware F770 (installed a few for customers and been impressed) I have been looking at the Thinkware iVolt... but am thinking to order and test the Iroad pack:

As jungle says above parking mode is motion based which is great but all you need to do is park in a busy location or near a tree and the constant movement will eat your battery.

I leave my car parked up for days at a time, and when I do drive it's typically too short to allow a full charge of the battery to get any reasonable time in parking mode with my PMP.

I did look into the Celllink-B, but from what I read it would mean continual charging, which wasn't ideal?

One idea I did have was a solar trickle charge solution for the car battery. So I could keep the car battery above the threshold (11.8v) using the solar panel, which would mean the PMP wouldn't shut off?

Don't think I have quite fully thought about what the install would look like though...!

Slightly OT, but the 'right'/future solution is dashcam technology that's not so power hungry in the first place... Maybe using components like this if/when they're at a sensible price to do the standby motion detection and then fire up the main high res camera when needed... Dual camera setups are all the rage on phones these days

. A car battery isn't the "limitless battery power" some designers seem to have in their heads, so we get products designed will all sorts of kludgy add-ons :frown new:

The Cellink B battery is not that bad value given its capacity, which is much higher than the Anker would be. The Anker wouldn't last long at all.

PMP is a good solution, but it will wear your car battery down, as it did with mine. Had to replace mine after 3 years at a cost of £175 (needs an AGM type because of the stop/start feature). Cellink-B is well worth it to avoid that.

But the Cellink-B costs about the same as the car battery then, right? So really you're comparing extending the life of the car battery to x years compared with the service life of the Cellink-B which will also need replacing at some point/every y years?

I’m a big fan of the Cellink as given the 45 min journey each way to work it’s always fully charged and gives me pretty uninterrupted recording with zero car battery warnings on the DIS. The PM Pro did neither think 6 hours was the most I’d get from it on a regular basis ......

Packs like the Cellink are designed with constant discharge in mind so will last longer than a standard battery, besides a replacement battery for an A3 is more than just the standard unit cost. You need to set aside time for fitting or monies for someone else to fit + for a proper job it will also need coding, which unless you have VCDS or alike will add to the overall cost.

My blackvue with magic pro lasts 24 h0urs; it usually powers down when I get in the car after an extended period of time and then powers back up once the car is on again.

Hi mate, did you ever manage to connect a powerbank just for parking mode? If so any problems/ recommendations on a powerbank, etc?

There is a video on Youtube which express the reasons you shouldn't use Powerbanks. There Li-ion tech isnt the same and wont stand up to the scrutiny.
