Hi all,

So I recently got a custom plate (put it on my car 10th August) brand new from a new DVLA registration (not pre-owned), and was caught speeding 53 in a 30 in a completely difference county (over 150 miles away) to where I live! The letter states the car model/colour which matches.

Has anyone had this happen before?

Thanks

Wow dude. How do you prove this to them? I can imagine it's hard to explain its not you. I have heard of this happening but the chances are slim

No idea, it's a pain! I don't know if they take Google Maps as evidence, but that shows me driving 2 miles to work and back that day :wtf:

**** do you have a dash cam by chance?

Happens to me allot... always getting speeding tickets which weren't for me... :innocent:

Nah in all seriousness I'd just tell them it wasn't you and try provide as much evidence as you can of that, also make sure any pictures of the car online have the plate blurred just to be on the safe side.

I don't really see the point of blurring plates? It's not like you can hide the plate when you're driving down the road, visible to thousands of people.

Parked somewhere etc.. I'm not even sure if blurring pics could be considered mitigating the risk.

However, that sucks! Hope you can somehow prove it wasn't you and they believe it!

Dont appear on Google search eg if you need to clone a white S3 there are 100s on there vs waiting on the street for one to pass by. Daft to reveal plates imho.

Yeah fair point. But if i was planning on fake plating my car well.... wouldn't you google the internet so you can copy a plate more easily ? I mean nobodys going to drive around looking for a identical car.

I suppose, and maybe if it was like a ferrari I'd see the point much more. And things like your RS4 apply too as they are rare also.

I was blanking my plate at first but then was like, I can't be bothered :) fair enough if you choose to though! Lucky for me there are tonnes of sepang S3s and my posts don't get tonnes of likes etc to be up there in the Google searches haha.

Too late we've cloned your plate and got the high score through a speed camera :playful:

Not sure what your arguing; Ferrari or Micra nobody wants their plate cloned with speeding tickets, parking fines and whatever else may occour.

Damn, another.

Well I just meant about the rarity. I imagine on Google there are far less I don't know, blue Ferrari <something> compared to a red Micra. So if you owned a blue ferrari something and there's not many results, your plate could easily make it up there. While if you are one of thousands of red micra, less chance to be on Google.

But of course nobody wants plates cloned :)

On the assumption you are saying you have received a notice of intended prosecution or summons you need to do the following;

a) report it to the police, get a crime reference number. I don't mean write in, I mean actually report it as a crime in person at a police station. This way, if thereis someone driving around with cloned plates, you have coevered your back. Do this now.

b) if it's a notice of intended prosecution write to the police and explain everything. If a summons (be it to Court or single justice notice) then pretty much do the same. Do this now.

c) contact DVLA, it might be as simple as a mistake their end, taking in to account you just bought the plate. Do this now aswell

d) after that obtain all the records you can showing you were not where the police say your vehicle was. This could be something from your employer saying you were at work, bank statements or receipts showing you were in a different location, perhaps text messages or work e-mails showing you were doing something else. Anything you have send it to the police/Court as soon as you obtain it. Chase them for replies if nothing within 14 days, even if it is acknowledgement of receipt.

e) do everything by either e-mail or recorded delivery and keep copies

Lots of people have an 'it's their problem not mine' attitude. These are the same people who end up facing trials, points, and heavy fines. The earlier you act and the more diligently you act, the better chance you have of this being resolved with minimal hassle.
