Morning all,

So in the next few weeks I'm putting a deposit down on an S4, so needless to say I have taken a lot of interest in the S4 posts on this forum over the past few months.

Why is that it is full of:

"You don't buy an S4 and then think about economy"
"You don't by an S4 for comfortable ride"
"Why buy an S4 and then put it in economy mode"

Do people think you buy a 'fast car' and then should just drive it lie you stole it for every second?? Should you only drive long distances if you have a diesel? Actually what I want is an understated car which when I want power i.e. overtaking slow lorries or tractors I can put my foot down and it over in seconds. Along side that it will be my daily driver for work and pleasure, so actually I want a car that I can drive normally and would be happy to get 34 - 38mpg and then when I want a bit of fun.....25 mpg will do me any day!

And i've test driven 3 S4s now in 3 different dealerships, with different specs. All of them were more comfortable than my 2.0TDI S-Line A4 Avant. The ride was smoother, and the one with the adaptive suspension was so noticeable. So the whole 'you don't buy an s4 for a smooth ride' is rubbish.

Oh and on those test drives, the cars were all set in economy mode and it is a beast anyway... then all 3 dealers suggested changing the modes to experience them. Dynamic as with my current A4 is fierce, fast throttle response, and a harder ride, but the S4 opens its exhaust note.

Ok so I may have got out of the wrong side of bed but come on people, we drive on pot-holed, speed camera ridden roads. So if I'm cruising on country roads following behind traffic, do you know what I'll put it in economy mode so reserve that fuel for when the road becomes clear.......

Rant over!

I'm better now zippster lol! As I said it was a little rant...

Haha, that certainly is a rant for first thing in the morning! :)

I think on the economy front, I agree that I think about the economy but I don't expect miracles. It's something I worry about but I'd alter your quote slightly to say 'You don't buy an S4 FOR the economy', and then I'd agree.

I can't remember anyone saying that you don't buy it for road comfort. It's not a bad ride, just that you have to bear in mind that it's not going to ride like an A8 on air suspension or something. That's maybe what people are getting at. It's designed to be a little more sporty and will therefore be a little stiffer sprung as a result, that's all.

I agree about using efficiency mode though. I leave it like that 80% of the time because, like you said, I don't drive it like I stole it all the time. I'll pop it into Individual or Dynamic mode when I want to have a little play though. And then I won't be worrying about the economy.

Glad that you'll be picking one up though, I think they're great all-rounders!

Fair shout but I would say that if you're coming out of a Diesel that the fuel consumption could be a bit of a shock in the S4. No it's not terrible, and with the power available and then quattro chewing up a bit more than a 2WD I think it's a good balance. But even for me coming out of a 335d there is quite a step change. I knew it, I don't mind, but there is the fact I get ~250 miles from a tank vs. 350 in the BMW.

I do agree on the ride. The S4 rides really quite nicely, and coming out of a BMW with RF tyres it feels like a limo!

I personally don't bother with the Eco setting, but the nice thing is that you'll feel a mighty step-change when you knock it into Dynamic if you do! I'm just not sure how much difference Eco will make on the miles per tank and honestly - I want it in Dynamic or Individual with most things wound up - just down to personal preference.

In the end there'll be guys that buy an RS6 and never put their foot fully down. ETTO!

Haha, hope you feel better with that off your chest :welcoming:

I’m on your side though in that I also wanted a car that does everything, comfortable, fast, build quality and a step up from my previous S3, the S4 is all of these.

I do 20k per year on average so probably a diesel would be the sensible choice, however I enjoy my driving and the S4 is a great mile cruncher and gives plenty of those smiles per mile. I’ve had my share of diesels but you just can’t beat a petrol for performance.

I’m sure most others on here that own an S4 are the same with appreciating all this car has to offer, using comfort, eco mode at varying different levels, I’ve used it in eco mode a few times and impressed by the mpg when driven sensibly, however dynamic/sport just begs you to select and forget about the economy and just enjoy the damn thing, individual mode just gives you a personal blend.

So just chill mate, get in that S4 and enjoy it, those few weeks will soon fly by and hope you enjoy the new whip as much as I do with my S4 :icon thumright:

Cheers guys.

Daggerit sorry I meant “you don’t buy an S4 FOR the economy” - fingers were typing on all cylinders lol!

I bought a diesel as in my previous job I had diesel company cars and was doing 30k + miles a year, a lot of it motorway. I changed jobs and had to get my own car but though my I would do 20k Miles. Turns out I did 13k and not as much motorway as planned. An a decent motorway run I’ve had 67mpg but generally I get around 50-55. That side the price of diesel is set to increase......

I turn the big 40 shortly and I always promised myself another M3. However this was my first Audi and absolutely love it. So as I don’t do the mileage and I’m getting near the top of the hill, I thought I’d get the S4

Drive it how you like, its your car but if you wish economy and performance the the 3.0l v6 diesel is a better bet.
You can't blame us for giving you our opinions though...

Completely agree. Everyone is entitled to their opinion cuke2u, just frustrates me when people think that performance means you sacrifice comfort and economy and it is simply not the case any more.

Well mpg is way down on my list anyway, but these modern turbo engines have pretty impressive mpg and for the performance they give. If the 1.4 tfsi is equated to a normally aspirated 2.0l it is amazing in terms of performance and mpg for example.

The s4 is just about nudging on supercar performance, but with comfort and good mpg so you've made the right choice for yourself.

The problem some have is that they look at the manufacturers figures and when they can't achieve them they go off on one.

All I say to them is drive a mk1 focus rs for week then come back and tell us what the mpg is because bog standard cars are literally thrashing them now and that's even before we get into a s4...

Haha its funny how 'hot hatches' from 15 - 20 years ago are the performance of a standard family car now. E.g MK1 Golf GTI etc.

"Why is that it is full of:" .........that is one of the aspects of a forum.
Me...........economy??? I'm an ex-warmed Subie man. Yes, It did also have an 'economy mode', which I used, I think, twice in 8 yrs. S4 = 0.
Tick [1] for Sports Diff. But, don't be lulled into thinking quattro so superior.
It is comfortable, and dare I say, even better with the Eibachs.
Thought you would have included 'initial acceleration lag'. A sensational Bang for Buck 'pedal box' fixes that.
'RS4 with Eco mode'.....Seriously! Any driver using that would have to have their pulse checked.
40... you poor 'whippersnapper'. So far back I can't remember, but apparently happened at the turn of the century.
So, buy your S4 Avant, enjoy, and :). If you don't, trust me I am.

I drive my s4 like I stole it because I have my dirty diesel for my daily mile munching. I prefer individual mode with it set to auto except the exhaust noise, so it is ready to go a little more than eco mode.

But my favourite mode is dynamic with the traction control switched Into sport.

I don’t find the ride terrible it’s the roads you drive on that makes the ride difference, that’s why people should test drive it around the area they live.

Mpg figures are in a controlled environment and like cuke2u said people moan when they don’t hit the figures in the book.

Lifes to short to moan about 5-10mpg or how rough the roads are.

Completely agree with the sentiment of the post, when I look at buying a new car I go onto forums and ask whats fuel consumption etc like because the official numbers are a load of rubbish. Everyone has a budget, I suspect the 'if you have to ask its not for you' brigade would be a lot thinner if you only got 10mpg on a good run.

I think the great thing about the S4 is it can do what ever you want it to do, in any weather with 4 people + their bags sitting in comfort.

For the record, Eco mode is actually pretty good at adding a few more MPG to a boring motorway run on cruise control

The 'S4 is nudging on supercar performance' comment above made me chuckle a bit though...

This made me laugh - thanks SMI77... I have a feeling I'm going to enjoy!

Thanks ub7rm, if nothing else the post has created some excellent conversation, lifted spirits and ive got lots of good advice from owners who live with them on a day-to-day basis! :thumbs up:

Imagine you bought a P1 and then the new McLaren 720s comes out, much cheaper and just as fast.

It’s like everything you buy, 2 years later or even a month later there is something better for cheaper. It’s like the episode of top gear where they had supercars go around there track then put around some fast everyday cars which beat them.

So to think in 5-10 years time most cars will have a 0-62 of around 2.7-3.5 seconds, especially with people going to electric and hybrid engines.

Leaner drivers in Tesla model 3s using ludicrous mode at the lights onto a duel carriageway haha.

If you bought a P1, then McLaren are offering the 720S to you with bells on. First drive, tour of the factory, meet the designers, nice hotel and food with one of the big boys in the company and then enjoy speccing your 720S... :)

The s4 is incredibly comfortable especially compared to the m135 before it. Did a 8 hour round trip yesterday. 4 of those hours in my Bwm to px it and my back was in agony by the time I got to dealer. However 4 hours back home in s4 and I felt great. Back was fine and I was a very happy chap Get one. You have one life so if you can afford it then do it

you can't beat larger cars/saloons/suv's on longer journeys. I did a 8 hour round trip to Harrogate and back a couple weeks ago in my Q5, was a breeze and very comfortable. A few years back was loaned a fiesta whilst waiting for a new S-Max (had small kids :) and drove 3.5 hours to Dartmouth for a weekend, and whilst the fiesta is a great supermini, I was k*ackered and my back killing me
