2.5tdi replacement camshafts ??

Hi chaps great forum of knowledge looking for some help

I have a 2002 a4 2.5tdi quottro avant the 180 version AKE

Recently had the cam cover off after a long problem with noisy lifter tick to inspect cam lobes and 2-3 on the rear driver side bank have wear almost like something has become lodged and scored a grove in the Center of lobe ...

She s an old girl but miles are fairly low at 114k so I’m thinking of putting some money into fixing but looking for recommendations of replacement camshafts for a single bank only !!

I’m only looking to do the driver side cams and lifters,rockers etc , not both as money won’t warrant it , this car has cost me a fortune since owning 3.5 years now

I did the searches and found febi and kolbenschmit both come up as replacements for my car can anyone shed some light on what’s best to go for apart from genuine? And what brand genuine actually are? INA? Febi? Etc

Much appreciated your help guys , hoping I can sort this without cancelling this and next years holiday or remortgaging

There used to some on here who could advise .Chris in london Adamms24 was a real expert but no sign lately.I expect you know these cams were improved on later ones Chris used to say chocolate cams..I have an 04 which I believe is not prone to wear.If it was mine I would wonder whether it was a choice between leaving it or doing both cams.It has long seemed to me that the value of these has dropped to a level where its hard to justify any big bills so best to spin it out as I am retired and do little miles now.Still a nice drive and am looking forward to a trip out tomorrow with my son to look at a car for him

I’m much the same mate it’s just my toy really the Mrs has her car and me a van, but this thing makes so much ****** noise going down the road with these lifters tapping away it’s embarrassing from such a car !

Yes it was Adams and crushers comments I found in search about the febi and kolb cams , was really just after some in sight into which are best and others to look at when doing the work!

Your right too about the cost , I’m very torn weather it’s even worth doing as the car is prob work £2g at best and Iv already spent that and more in the last 3 years on upkeep and worn parts

Seems that you have reached that point where you have to choose and it cant be put off but I would do both if you can or she goes.Mines been in th family 8 years now and has just come back from a long run going as good as ever .I know i would have to spend big to get something newer that compares but prices are scary .If you have only got the cams to worry about fixing them might give you a lot more life out of the car .

What’s the consensus on only doing 1 side only when replacing cams then? I really didn’t think it would be an issue as both banks work separate head wise

It seems to me that what has been said indicates that both cams are vunerable and if you do one you are at risk of having to do the other soon.I have no idea of the cost but it seems that this is in the realm of what I fear would mean consideration of whether its worth it just like I have decided not to have the belts etc changed again after 6 years cos I havent done the miles.

There are 2 cams each side so I’d do the 2 but really not keen on doing all 4

Anyone done this before or is it a bad idea

Yes mate I want to keep the car but My budget is tight as Iv spent to much already so really just want o gauge if it’s worth doing 1 bank only or will that kill my engine quicker

Cant see how it can make any diff to the other side .Best of luck then .By the way someone in the trade said to me the new MOT is killing off a lot of older cars so I am thinking of asking my local to give mine a health check.It passed in April but if I knew it needed money to get through again I would have to think hard

Any other takers on this ?? Anyone done a single bank before and been fine? Is a camshaft a consumable item that can be replaced like a tyre or bulb !?

You can buy single cams ! Or a kit of 2 for my engine , so I didn’t even think it be an issue to just swop out one side if worn

If one side is worn, then the other most likely would be worn, too. Have you physically checked the other bank of cams? Are they all even and measure the same?
I would be weary of replacing one side and not the other, for a cost effective reason, you're already in there doing the work. But I also get your reasoning for doing just the one side (Providing the other banks of cams are fine!)
Never done the job myself, but my friend replaced both sets of cams in each bank on his 2.5tdi Allroad and it made a big difference to performance and mpg, so his must have been really worn down.

Only 1 side was looked at mate as that was the noisy side , the other was quiet as a mouse . Performance isn’t being effective either just the ticking from the lifts that stuck ....

I believe they are oil feed from that side working there way back toward the bulkhead and that’s were it’s noisy so crap has most likely blocked their path ways

I get the replace the lot comment it’s just a very big pill to swollow I’m not sure I have the funds for both banks plus with no real performance issues just the noise I’m tempted just to try the 1 side and if that fixes it , drive till it dies

Thanks for your input , I did speak to my brother who works for Volvo and one the old veteran techs there is an X Audi tech he told him doing
1 side is fine for the engine but doing both would obviously be better so that was my main worry

I will still have my guy to price up for both and see what the difference is , I’m very tempted just to sell or part ex for a 1.9tdi or newer model

I have a few options really and it’s only my toy it’s not my Dailey
