S3 Turbo issues reported

Mine is a April 14 build and the serial number / batch is one of the ones reported as dodgy.

Waiting for mine to go bang - especially as mine is driven hard when it does go out......

In same boat as you Pulp, not spoiling my enjoyment of the car though still gets driven hard.....

Just been out and had a look at mines and Ive got a 722H turbo.

That mean I can map the **** off it and it'll never blow up?? :jester:

edit: probably should have added mines was supposed to be BW4 15 car but I collected BW3 so it was likely more a BW52 2014 made car. Turbo build date is 13/11/14

Just had my turbo replaced on my S3, sliders were making an awful racket, much better now (nice and quiet)

Sorry for the newb questions here but going back to the start/stop issue could someone please confirm this is what you guys, and those over on the aussie forum have been discussing: (until I just googled it I'd honestly never heard of this technology!)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Start-stop_system

Secondly, could someone please explain in layman's terms why this is causing some turbo units to croak and finally what is the best advice to avoid problems? (I assume the stop/start can be disabled in the MMI?)

It's only supposition at the moment that S/S is causing turbo issues. I've not seen anything definitive yet.

The most likely effect of S/S is heat issues in the turbo, affecting bearings etc. but again, this is just supposition at the moment.

See post #74 on this thread for tips to alleviate this.

Thanks for the reply veeight :)

I had read the thread but not the links in your earlier post. Definitely food for thought. I'm not someone who tends to worry themselves to death over something that is pretty unlikely to happen but forewarned and all that.............. ;)

Is it best then to turn stop/start off for the time being via vagcom? I know it has a lower tax band for that reason but you can manually do it yourself in the car every time you drive it so don't really see the harm.
My car was delivered march 30th 15 so will check mine tonight and report back.

right well my turbo is 06K 145 722 H, so a 4th revision maybe?

May be a daft question but how do I find my turbo part number and revision - is it just a case of popping the hood and removing a cover ?

Touch wood but so far I don't have the rattle.

Here in Colombia we don't have the start/stop option and we've seen a few broken turbos. Most of them were 702A versions which are known to fail and on tuned cars. My car was built in October 2014 and was fitted with a 722H turbo which is working fine under high boost. Have the waste gate rattle though.

It would certainly seem that way, did any S3 owners ever see a 702A (revision 3) turbo fitted to theirs?
Also does anyone, @veeeight maybe, know the difference between each revision?

I have an A, my car is driven hard and is remapped.... no problems in 5000 miles

Thats good and I hope you continue to have no issues.
What BW out of interest? I think the original problem (for S3/GolfR engine cars) was on a small batch of revision 2 702N turbos built around April/May last year which I assume the revision 3 'A' was to resolve, but that seems to have been replaced with version 4 quite quickly?
As stated previously mine is N and dated around time of the 'bad batch' but it wont stop me enjoying my car and driving hard, am on around 5000 miles also and touch wood no issues so far.

Mine was BW 5/6 and has the 722H .... no rattles or odd noises so far touch wood !!

no idea, was built September last year i think.

Its all very well Audi saying 'don't worry, just drive it to the dealer' but when you're in the outside lane of the autobahn on a Sunday afternoon on holiday what will they do to compensate you.

Hammer, nail, head. This is *exactly* what happened to me, except it was on a friday. My car is getting repaired in Mannheim, Germany. I was on my way to Italy but that never materialized.

but what's stopping you having it recovered to home first ?

that has always been a concern of mine though. I still have a box fitted

The deal is that you can take it to the nearest dealer. When my turbo failed, the engine went into a safe mode and I could drive it to this dealer as instructed in the onboard manual. I was 400km from home though. They gave me a loaner A1.

Would this turbo issue be with my 63plate ? Or is it early 14 plate

I was worried about this but going by the above I should be clear? I picked up on 7th January 2014, built in Novemeber mainly..was worried about potential issues with this and warranty if I go the remap route in the near future!

I have a 63 plate. Was registered Sept 2013. Its done 13,000 miles now, I've had it since end of August and had it mapped the day after I bought it. 1,500miles with no issues so far. If the turbo pops, and you live close enough to the tuning company, they will remove the map so you can take to Audi for the warranty work. From my understanding, no one has had a warranty claim turned down yet after a map has been removed.

Mine was built Jan 2014, picked up in March 2014 and my turbo was replaced at 8,273 miles after it let me down on M25. Couldn't tell you what the part number of the turbo originally fitted was as mine was towed into Audi and they replaced it.

As well as fuel pump and some injectors, I seem to recall?

So would you think dtuk box better than remap as you can take it straight off

Sure I've seen a message on here from APR, that highlights that cars that have had the map removed, haven't flagged up a TD1 or refused warranty work. Looks like the cars flagging the TD1 still have the map when going to the dealer?

I'm lucky that I don't have finance on the car so no issues there. Worst case I'm buying a new turbo I guess!

Indeed you are correct veeeight, but Audi classed the High Pressure Fuel pump and 2 injectors as a separate issue. No idea why, as they all seemed to fail at the same time which was extremely odd. But (touching a lot of wood), no issues since - although I must admit since having the new turbo fitted (and after the comments earlier in this thread) I now switch off the start/stop every time I go out, especially during rush hour M25 traffic when you are constantly start/stopping - whilst not sure if that was a factor or not, just don't like it keep cutting in and out when traffic is very heavy.

See I've also had my HPFP replaced at around 10-12k. Did specifically ask about any other known issues at the time and was only informed of a recall on some LED headlight units that are missing some grommets. Some serious wood touching for me I guess..

A revival of an old thread I know, but was just wondering whether newer (late 2015/2016) S3's are still "suffering" from turbo issues or whether Audi has finally "fixed" the issue (if so, I wonder how they would react now to the "they all do that sir" that they used to say, if you got a problem on an earlier 2014 -> model S3).

Not that mines making any noises since it was replaced a year and 8k miles ago (touch wood!!!!), but just wondering, as haven't seen any mentioned for a while (which is good news of course!)

My turbo went "boom" a couple off days ago. Have read a ton of stuff allover. Here are the pics. They already shipped a new one but I'm very disappointed because the blown one is the latest revision. here are the pics......

Extremely disappointing.

Did they say if the issue was an oil starvation and/or heat issue causing the shaft to break?

Hi does any one with the knowledge Know what the process is to remove the original turbo from a 2016 Audi S3 from the car to replace it does the engine need to come out for the job?

Thanks in advance

Hi bit late but should I be worried about this I’m looking at car this weekend 2014 33,000 on clock car was first registratied 24 April 2014

It depends on which revision of the turbo you have.
This thread has the part number for the bad turbos and how to find the number on your turbo.
