Noob question :)
As the title suggests, not sure what happened to my paint. I've got a stone chip but then around it there is like a "mark" a few cm around it, the camera doesn't pick it up great but is quite noticeable..

Assuming that you can see it, any suggestions what I could try to deal with it? Don't think if it needs polishing around it or something? Waiting on my touch up pen to deal with the chip also...

So note to self, park under cover at all times for the future

Usually bird **** is wiped off as soon as I am home using an Autoglym Bird Droppings wipe, what can be done though? Or not a whole lot..


Go buy yourself a da polishing kit....there mug proof...it will transform your cars paint, full kit for around £150

you will be surprised how much damage you can do even with a DA... I get customers all the time who've attempted it themselves and then come to the first wash realize they have buffer trails and still got swirl marks in the paint making it look 5x worse than it did before.

in fact i have an Audi a5 in black next week in for this exact situation :p i will post the before and afters :)

Haha I could imagine this would be me... though I do try to wash carefully I by no means am a freak about it and I know the car has swirls, though I'm more concerned about it looking clean and getting rid of visible scratches and chips.

I know people post before and after polish pics under a bright light and you can see the difference, but when seen at a distance I wonder how much difference the paint looks.

So not sure if its in my interests to buy a DA as I'm not really patient enough to spend hours polishing, I would do the bonnet to fix this problem but then wouldn't have much urge to do any other part of the car lol.

Jassy is a bit of a salesman though ;)

Don't be scared by a DA they are very good and do make a massive difference. Obviously, you can make it worse by using the wrong stuff but that's because people don't look in to it enough or start with some mad compound and harsh pad to get it over with in the first 5 minutes. Lack of experience and gun ho attitude is where the trails and damage come from. Start low and work up is the best way to get results and spending time to do it right. The best advice is to go to a scrappers and pick up a bonnet, door wing, whatever is cheap, to practice on. This way you can balls it up on purpose and then spend time correcting it. By the way spending hours would be for the whole car. A good diminishing compound like the ones Jassy mentioned wouldn't take hours to do a bonnett. If the rest is in good condition you could fix that area in minutes. :)

I only bought a cheap DA but it has served me well and I've done no damage with it thus far, but I have been really happy with the results. I could easily spend loads of money on a nice one if I had the spare cash. :)

Done nothing about it yet, still umming and ahhing about buying a DA (and if so, how much to spend on one). Need to wait till I touch up the dent anyway with some paint I imagine before I touch the surrounding area anyway.

They must be total morons ...... Buy the correct pads and polish and most of all don't go mad with the speed settings and you can't fail to succeed piece of cake it is .... I only started using one in February and l have fully detailed 3 cars 2 with dark metallic blue paints and my very own.. And not one buffer trail or defect to be seen afterwards

That M4 Cp l haven't seen a gloss like that on any car mate, prior to starting the paint correction it was full of swirls and marring, as my son had used them migrant car washes for months, it's now up for sale at £64k or something like that, it looked absolutely stunning as he drove away afterwards, it only had some done and dusted sprayed over it no wax or Sealant

Picture probably doesn’t do it justice, but what gloss and a lovely deep blue. Hope you charged Or take a cut of the sale proceeds

I agree, I was sh**ing myself the first time I tried it...but once I had there is nothing to worry about, just start with the softest pad and lowest cut polish and it will be fine :)

Some difference hey!

Should/do people bother with using clay before polishing? or just a normal wash.

Use a G3 Clay mitt before - dead easy.

Some difference hey!

Should/do people bother with using clay before polishing? or just a normal wash.
No claying for me l spray a fallout remover over the area's required and if needed a tar remover that's on a new car though, not a fan of claying at all as you can inflict serious marring on the paint

£144, so like 50~ cheaper than the pro plus, which came with another pad and a bag I think but whatever. I'm sure this will do the job as seems highly rated anyway.
So yellow pad and start slow with the speed and work my way up while using the Meguiars ultra cut compound and then once "done" (whenever I decide that is), change to white pad and the ultra finishing polish?

I've got some other areas of the car which have some quite deep scratches, will need a different pad for those I imagine. Albeit I'm not even sure if polishing will make them come out, so I better look at it first before attacking it more :)

Fantastic mate use the speed setting 4 for paint correction and speed 2 for polishing you'll do good and your confidence will grow and grow but do not machine polish in bright sunlight always in the shade,as the polish will prematurely cure and you'll get dusting everywhere,ps clean yer pad with a toothbrush after every pass as it clears the pours and stops the pads been clogged up with polish and makes them easier to wash afterwards

The idea is to move up in strength. So I would start with the least abrasive pad and compound and see if that gives you the finish you want. If not then move up a pad and see what you get. Still no joy, then back to the least abrasive pad and up the compound, etc, etc. Not much point in attacking it with a harsh pad and compound and then having to refine it if you could have got it out much easier in the first place. The usual way to go about these things is to try to remove as little as possible of the top coat each time you work on it. To be honest, I'd be surprised if that didn't come out with finishing polish (obviously hard to tell on the pictures though). JMHO

Agreed, but Oli has Meguiars ultra cut and ultra polish. For something like the patch he has I think I'd start with the polish as he's not experienced yet and it doesn't look that bad to me.

Also it depends on how the paint reacts. Everyone says Audi paint is hard, but my previous brilliant black was really soft and it would mark just looking at it. On that I used Scholl S40 and it came up a treat. On the my current glacier white, so a metallic rather than the flat black, I had a few swirls and light scratches on delivery. These were addressed with a black hexlogic and Menzerrna final finish (3800), which is very light and shouldn't really have touched them, but they still went. Hence my start with the lightest touch first approach. Obviously, I could have gone in with a heavier pad and diminishing compound and I would have got the same finish but I would have removed more lacquer in the process. The same as most things in detailing though everyone has their own way of tackling something, and there isn't always a right way and a wrong way just your own way. :)

S40 with a soft to medium polishing pad will remove light to medium swirling and marring its great stuff mate

Absolutely agree, I love the Scholl stuff. I was just trying illustrate that you don't have to hack at something with a chainsaw if a scalpel will do, even if you have the chainsaw in the shed. :)

It isn't really that bad, only can see it from certain angles really and depends on the light. So I might as well try the ultra polish first I suppose.

The kit arrives tomorrow, but still not received my touch up paint stuff for the chip...need patience for that to arrive...

Well the good news is the weird paint is gone... the bad news is I messed up when using the touch up paint, the clear coat anyway and now theres a few rather visible blobs of paint on the bonnet :(! Not sure how I can thin it down.... looks rather silly....
 
1500/2000 grit sand paper and a pen, tape the sandpaper on to the pen, turn the pen gently on the blobs til there reduced/level then bring it back up with a DA and a compound polish
