How much fuel do you save when you set to 'Efficiency' mode?

Hi I am driving an A3 1.5 Petrol - Automatic and I was wondering, how much fuel would I save if I set to 'Efficiency' mode? What is the fuel difference vs Comfort, Auto and Dynamic mode? How much will I save? I set to efficiency mode when I travel to work and back and approximately takes me around 25-30 mins to get to work and I hardly go over 45MPH.

Does anyone have any stats?

Appreciate everyone's help :redface new:

None. I drove from Portugal to Italy, 1000+ miles. I tried to compare Dynamic & Efficiency. Dynamic used less fuel as it gave me more power to get up to speed. Forget the actually mpg but it was something like +5mpg using Dynamic. Mine is a 1.6tdi but I guess same applies to all models. Ill try to did up the post I started...

Here it is: https://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/2-fotos-that-shows-efficiency-mode-is-not-so-efficient.299233/

Depends on the engine though, my S5 needs no extra help in efficiency mode, even with laggy throttle and quick upchanges, 350bhp is plenty to do normal driving. I’d estimate efficiency is worth 5mpg in the S5 (which is a lot when I regularly struggle to get above 30 on a short run. In dynamic with gearbox in sport I’d be lucky to get above high teens...

In the s3 efficiency does seem to add a little on a motorway journey due to the coasting feature etc, I find it a bit unsettling though so don’t use it.

Of course! but in context I think my point is valid! We are talking about the OP's 1.5 petrol and mine is a 1.6tdi! so we need all the power we can get!!

I use efficiency to limit power during snow or icy conditions, and that's about it. You end up pressing your foot down more to make up for the lack of power so don't end up saving anything anyway.

Lauren best thing to do is drive for a week in each mode and keep your eye on your mpg so you can figure out if you getting any real saving.. the saving will be quite small on a 1.5 so i wouldnt worry to much about it .. i would just select the setting you feel most comfortable with when driving and enjoy your car. And when you want the extra power just knock the gear stick back into s mode for that quick boost of power

Personally I find that the best thing with Efficiency is that when travelling at motorway speeds the Stronic won't drop down a gear each time you squeeze the accelerator a little, it just stays in 7th.

As a rule I generally don't use it.
I've not got the same engine as you but I tried it on a 160 mile steady journey up the A9 under average speed camera conditions a year ago. Using Comfort I got 38mpg coming home but I got 42mpg in Efficiency going up. So that gives you an idea of +10% approx.
I would say though, that those driving conditions are rarely encountered by me.
I have an S Tronic and hate the free-wheeling when lifting off the throttle.

You seem to get the best economy in dynamic with manual mode. Efficiency makes no difference to me as far as I can work out, save for the odd 50 yards or so of coasting on the motorway.

Certainly doesn’t give enough improvement in mpg to compensate for the awful feeling of coasting.

None. I ran tests for months at a time in different modes and trying different fuels. But it depends on your own journeys. For me, I was doing a lot of dual carriageway driving and Auto was the most efficient, followed by Dynamic, then Efficiency was actually the least economic! But if your journey is mostly stop-start city driving I think efficiency might be better than dynamic.

Only way for sure is to try it.

Difficult to tell, I actually think it's worse in my 1.5 - with a 13 mile trip varying between 20-60 mph. I actually believe my mpg takes longer to increase and generally has worse consumption than auto/comfort mode. I generally leave it on auto and it works out well for me. On auto/Comfort I get approx 42-45 mpg on a mixture of roads over a 40min 13 mile trip with traffic. On efficiency I was getting 40? if that.

Dynamic, I don't really regularly drive on so I couldn't tell you what the consumption would be in my case.

Efficiency mode for motorways, dynamic for normal driving is what I'm doing at the moment.

Had my A3 Sportback 1.4tfsi 125 Manual since February now and according to the spreadsheet I run (yeah I know).
  • Dynamic mode uses LESS fuel than Efficiency.
  • Shell Unleaded gives better MPG than Shell ''king hell how much' Optimax unleaded.
  • Onboard Computer tracks MPG 10% more than real life.
