I currently own a 3 year old 2.0 diesel sportback black edition plus with Quattro and i am thinking of upgrading to the new model

I can’t decide between diesel or petrol given the current uncertainty around diesel

I also cannot decide between adding either the Auto box or the tech pack (each around the same price)

I do 7k miles a year but a lot of it commuting in city traffic so the auto and the virtual cockpit would both help with the boredom of this each day

Help !!!!!

I have tech pack and auto and wouldn’t be without either to be honest.

I had the same dilemma with diesel v petrol and went for 2.0 190bhp petrol in the end and it’s a good engine. Get average in high 30’s MPG and it’s a nice smooth engine. Not as torquey as a diesel but plenty fast enough for A road overtaking.

Don’t regret my choice one bit. I came from a 2016 C Class C250d and the build quality on the Audi is way better. Always had Audi before the Merc and will not make the same mistake again!

Whichever you choose it will be a great car but with you doing such low mileage the petrol makes more sense.

Only problem is that i want to keep quattro and think you can only have this with the more powerful 252 petrol engine, which makes it too expensive

Yes if you want quattro it’s the bigger engine which is expensive.

Interestingly if you are financing on PCP the S5 works out cheaper I think due to higher GFV.

At 7k diesels pointless for starters.

I went for the automfor similar reasons. Out of the two auto wins over tech pack in real usability terms.

On low mileage then yes petrol. Alex sense but the TFSi engine on a Quattro was only pennies from an S5 when I did the same pros/cons and the 8nsurance was also high.

In the end I went for 2.0 TDi Quattro with the auto box. No regrets.

Also have the 2.0tfsi 190 with tech pack, cover about 8k miles a year mostly A roads.
If careful can get mid 40's and on one occasion got 50mpg following traffic at 50mph.

I wouldn't change my spec has everything I need!

If it's a case of one or the other for you auto or tech pack then personally I would go with the tech pack and carry on shifting gears.

This is my first auto car and although it's smooth and an easy drive I do feel sometimes it takes away from the joy of driving also the console is what you spend most of your time looking at!

This questions a little **** about face.
I know i know. Each to their own but since it's been asked.

Petrol/diesel. This decision should be based solely on mileage. Nothing else.

As for the autobox/tech pack. It should really say autobox/manual. If the auto is your preferred choice then the tech pack should be irrelevant in this instance.

Thanks all for your comments. It seems that if i want petrol and quattro then i HAVE to also have Auto, have to go for S-line spec and the higher output 2l engine, all of which price it out of my budget so diesel it will probably have to be

Will then decide between auto/manual and tech pack depending on the quotes that come back for these

Carwow is your friend for pricing.

Yep. I went for the 252 Quattro Sline plus tech, plus sound packs. Oh and a few other bits just because .

Was going to get an S5 but the deal I got on the A5 252 thru CarWow and haggling was too good, and the PCP rate better

Saved just under £10k off list

I came from a 2.0 177 2.0 diesel black edition coupe and went for the 252 Quattro Sline plus tech , all I can say is cant keep the smile off my face every time I drive it :)

Oh....now that sounds good. Current car is an a3 sportback sline, 64 plate. So, it’s time to look and I was considering the a5 sportback sline .... but s5........

To be fair. I switch between Fwd and AWD constantly and even with a fairly heavy foot I'd be hard pushed to notice any difference.

I have the B9 S5 SB and don't regret having one for a second. The only downside is it is VERY thirsty therefore expensive to run (and insure). I do not do many miles at all (8k max pa) and spend around £60 per week on fuel.

One of the reasons I didn’t go for the S5. Also coming from an S3 Saloon after 2 years, and still having loads of tread on the original tyres, I realised my boy racer days might be over . So why pay the premium for something I probably would rarely use, nice though the S5 is.

Just found out my car has arrived in the UK. Only got to wait until September to get it now

You think owning an S3 or S5 is akin to being a BOY RACER!!???....you really have the wrong concept about cars and driving in general then.

Chill out IJB. That was said with tongue firmly in cheek.

I am 50 ***, done load of track days, had numerous ‘performance cars’ so hardly in the demographic as a boy racer. .

My point was I wasn’t using the S3 to its full potential in the real world. Hence I couldn’t justify the additional cost of the S5 especially with the discount I got on the 252 Quattro, or fuel economy, tax etc costs. In real world driving, I think the 252 will be quick enough. Nothing against your choice of S5, sure you love it and aren’t a ‘boy racer’ either .

I originally wanted the A5 Quattro 2 litre, or the S5, but as it's my first car the insurance would have been bonkers so I went for the 2 litre FWD auto and It's awesome, so much nice technology with driver assistance tour, parking advanced, Matrix LED etc. it will hopefully keep me busy until the MBUX is available on the E/S Class :)

Did you find the fuel economy got better though? Mine's pretty good but it already had 5K on it when I got it. I mainly got the S5 for the extras it came with as standard, and the nice petrol engine :icon thumright:

ISTR there wasn't all that much difference in price between a S5 and a 2.0 litre Quattro with similar specification (tech pack, 19" wheels, etc)

On a good day I get 36mpg from the S5, on others it can barely reach 20

And on a very fun day less than 10 :racer:
