Hi all,

New on here having just taken ownership of a lovely a4 special edition

I think it's in pretty good shape although the engine temp gauge never gets above 70, gets there quick enough etc but I presume I need to get the stat checked / replaced

Heating feels warm enough - was just really posting question on here to see if 70c is 'normal' and if it's not how much I could expect to pay for fixing the issue.

Thanks in advance

Garry

Temp should rise quickly to 90 and stay dead on during running, if its reading low then most probably the thermostat, not an expensive part or diy fix.

your welcome, there is allways a chance it could be the temp sender but most cases it's the thermostat, eitherway very doable and not silly expensive cost involved.

good luck

I have had two special editions both in the 80k mile range with this fault. Bought a decent quality stat from ebay each time for around £35 if memory serves. The second one I had issues with as it first of all leaked from a connection with a steel pipe which is a push fit ( The stat is built into a housing that bolts to the block and connects to three pipes.) and after sorting that it was apparent it was still leaking which came from the main O ring where the housing bolts to the block, This stat didn't come fitted with the O ring so I re-used the old one as I couldn't get another at the time and I thought this was the problem but it turned out I had nipped it whilst fitting. Anyhow I rang TPS the next day for an O ring and was told it was a fiver or so so out of curiosity I asked how much for the stat itself which comes with the O ring fitted and it was around £25 plus vat with our firms discount. My car now has a genuine stat fitted and I have the ebay one in the garage as a backup!

Anyway, the point of the long ramble was its probably just the stat and price up a genuine one as its probably not that expensive.

Mine had this done just beffore i bought it a year ago. an audi specialist charged £153 for thermostat seal and a temp sender, its only £30 ish so worth ago urself if ur handy with the spanners lol

I have same issue audi dealership quoted me over £400 to change thermostat!! I said no thank you

Thanks so much all for taking the time to reply

I have tried a search but couldnt find anything (could be I'm trying to use the site off my phone) but is there any idiot proof DIY guides for having a go myself??.

Cheers in advance

you tube always have a good selection of DIY vids for a heck of a lot of jobs on B7's

Its a bit of a fiddle to do and you will need some spline bits for some of the bolts but its not beyond someone who knows how to start a spanner! You need to remove the alternator and release some of the metal coolant pipes from their hidden fixing bolts but other than that its just basic common sense stuff. I think my last change took about an hour but due to my afore mentioned leaks I have done it a few times now and I do work on cars for a living too.
