Winter tyres?

The odd thing is that we are talking about something which is FREE!

Winter tyre cost £0 more than UHP tyres (which the car comes on). They don’t wear any faster. In fact they usually come with 11mm of tread rather than 8mm. There is an upfront cost but it equalises out by the lack of use of the summers.

Even if winters were 0.01% better it would still be worth it.

The only cost is the 2hrs or so a year to swap them over, and perhaps a small fitting and balancing charge £0-40.

I totally agree.

But I can understand cake2u’s argument that if he doesn’t actually drive in the conditions where they’re better then it’s not worth the initial outlay.

Unfortunately, living in Britain, most of us have jobs and families where we need to go to work and maybe go do shopping and things in the less than perfect conditions and that’s when I’m thankful for having them.

It’s amazing that people still argue against the actual benefit of them. They’re the only contact between your £20, 30, 40, 50+ thousand car and the road that can stop you binning it or hitting someone else, why not make sure you maximise that grip?

I’ve also heard the same people (not folk on here) commenting about the grip benefits of paying extra for different summer tyres for the grip?! So they’ll pay extra for those but not the winters? Mad.

For me it’s not worth changing to winter tyres. I average 10 months in one car lol

Winter tyre cost £0 more than UHP tyres (which the car comes on). They don’t wear any faster. In fact they usually come with 11mm of tread rather than 8mm. There is an upfront cost but it equalises out by the lack of use of the summers.

Even if winters were 0.01% better it would still be worth it.

The only cost is the 2hrs or so a year to swap them over, and perhaps a small fitting and balancing charge £0-40.

Its not free, anyone who thinks so must be blind. Not if you do it properly....

I have been doing it properly on several cars and it's free. People "upgrade" their wheels and sell their smaller wheels for very little money. They often happen to be the official winter wheel. I buy them, fit winter tyres. I then sell the complete wheels when I sell the car. I normally sell them for as much as the initial outlay if not more as it's convenient for people to have a ready made solution. And I have saved the wear on my summers.

It's about 40mins to swap but it's the perfect opportunity to check brake pads, clean the wheels properly and the wing liners anyway.

The "your car insurance is invalidated if you have an accident" sure works for me.

And "you will be fined if your stranded car blocks the road" oh, YES! I love that!

ALL UK insurance companies should apply the same here in the UK, as from TODAY!

That way, and I DO agree 100% with them that don't want to or see the need to, everyone is accommodated.

Don’t critise someone because they choose to stay indoors during bad weather, in the same way that you shouldn’t be criticised because you like going out in a foot of snow for a laugh.

I agree, but at the same time staying in when there's bad weather is a luxury that the majority of us don't have since we have work or other commitments unfortunately. I think that's more where the citisism came from, because it's not a reality for most people.

It's just the same as saying "I'm not going to buy sunglasses because I won't look at the sun". Of course you don't need winters if you don't go out.

Snow driving is awesome by the way, you gotta try it! Find the steepest and deepest road and see if you make it!

They get rave reviews but seemingly not available in very many sizes, luckily they are for our Sports unfashionable 50 profile 225/17"s

I fitted winters on my 19s and it was a bit of a pain so i fitted a new set of 19in wheels to my 19in tyres lol

Here are the new Nokians on. I find them quieter than the Contisport contact 6 and ever so slightly softer.


And the contis now mated to new set of wheels

lol that's one way to do it! I'm not a fan of the continental tyres that came with the S4, hoping Michelin will be better. Continental seem to break traction quite easily.

My old b8.5 had Conti sport contacts on them and they were horrible tyres. The car handled a LOT better on the winter tyres! They were very snatchy and tramlined horribly.

Can't go wrong with Michelins really. Though the Pirreli's the B9 came on are very good.

Winter tyres are coming in really handy at the moment! So many people are abandoning cars on roads with even the slightest gradient. I'm just sailing past with no drama! Hehe

I still haven't found a road or conditions that stop Quattro and winter tyres! Amazing combo.

Same. The overtaking lane on all roads of my commute is nearly snowed over. I was the only one in it. The ESC hasn't flashed once. Very capable.

@RaZ A4 In a word, brilliant, they have coped with the worst weather the winter has offered so far - snow, slush, freezing rain and sleet - not missed a beat at all in our B9.

Ended up caught up in a blizzard the other week and while plenty of large SUV 4wheel drives were struggling and slithering around presumably on summer tyres, we just sailed serenely on our merry way, as someone else said in the fast lane that was covered in snow which everyone else had abandoned at one point too whilst on the MWay.

Admittedly we have them on a Quattro and know how to drive to the conditions but I'd go so far as to say I'd prefer to drive any 2 wheel drive car in the snow on decent winter tyres or proper all season ones in preference to a 4 wheel drive vehicle on summer tyres.

I'm seriously impressed enough to be buying another set of wheels for these Cross Climates to go on late in April this year, as the 24month lease on our B9 is up in early May, but there is no way they'll be going with the car - I've got the worn for 18k Michelin Primacy the car came with, which still have enough life in them for the car to go back with them.

Just gotta decide which B9 to replace current 3.0TDi Q 218 Avant with though - would have rather kept this one but Audi financial services gave us a comedy quote to extend our lease, so just shopping around now.

I don't have winters on my S4. That stays at home and I use my diesel Avant instead.

I have winters on my B8 3.0tdi Avant....managed to get a full set including alloys from Audi for £500!!! Sometimes they have stupidly cheap offers.

My friend got a full set for her A1 for around £350 including alloys!

The tyres are Dunlop. Performance in ice and snow is excellent.

You’d be able to run 255/35/19 without causing any issues to your car and there’s lots more options in that size. There was a point raised as to what insurance would say with a slightly different tyre size should you have an accident but I highly doubt it’s something they’d notice or check.

I found some cheap A5 wheels with winter tyres already fitted on eBay and snapped them up and they work perfect on the S4.

Also you are better off using a smaller and thinner alloy.

My winter wheels are smaller diameter and width than my summer ones. It helps cut through snow better...all recommended by Audi.

Only issue you'll have with an S4 is caliper clearance. I reckon 18" is the smallest U can go.

It's also easier to just bolt the whole wheels on and off rather than changing tyres off your main alloys.

I am guessing the S4 winter setup will be 18" minimum for clearance and a slightly thinner wheel.

The one I was offered ran the same width tyres, I don’t know about the actual rim width though. And they wanted £1700.

Door sticker tells you what’s recommended for each model and what sizes for M&S.

Thanks... Just looking at wheels to purchase as intend to have a set of wheels wrapped in winter tyres.

However currently navigating offsets and stud diameters ... all very confusing!

Mine worked well yesterday on the way home after being away with work for a few days, I thought people had a bad parking moment then realised they were abandoned.
Best thing that grips snow is .. er snow, unless you’ve got spikes,

Nokian WRA4 on my S4 Avant and I've just helped dig a lorry out of the snow. These tyres are fantastic. Truly. 19". The people out there with summer tyres really need to re-evaluate. Coming from someone that's crashed in snow a couple of years ago using summers. Gritters are out doing their best.

Question - if I look at the tyre sticker on my door I can see that it lists both my tyre - 245/40 R18 but also lists 225/45 R18 M + S (Mud & Snow?). Does this mean if I am looking for a set of All Season tyres to replace my Summer tyres on the same 18" alloys that my Audi came with I could fit either size? If I can is there any downside to fitting the 225/45 R18? Would they look strange?

Feel like at my age and years of driving I should know this but to be honest i've always just fitted the same tyre size as the cars came with so be kind...

Always better to go with a slightly narrower and higher aspect ratio for winters. Works out around the same rolling radius, so the sidewall will look about the same.

Cheers. Would the same logic apply to All Season tyres though that I'm going to have on all the time?

What tyres have the latest S4 B9's been coming with from the factory, does anyone know?

I’ve got the 19 V spoke alloys on my S4, believe they are an 8” rim, and I’m struggling to find a decent all Season tyre in 234/45/R19. Local dealers and even the national ones seem to have sod all choice...

Anyone managed to find any / recommend a decent supplier? Haven’t touched the tyres since I got the car a year ago as I expected to wear them through pretty quick as I broke her in- i think I’ve done that well enough so time to look at changing.

Unsurprisingly the last couple of days reminded why I normally wear all seasons, my beloved Quattro laboured up the bank from like an asthmatic donkey and enough was enough when a 20 something in a Corsa nipped past me .

I’ve considered getting a second set of rims but I haven’t got the storage space and don’t particularly fancy paying to warehouse them, working away a lot I want the wife to be able to jump in the car if the weather is crap and not have to sit spinning spanners!

You'll struggle with all seasons for 19". I couldn't find anything. Only SUV spec. The Nokians are genuinely great mate. Good value, great reviews and immense grip. Might get another 2 months out of them then just shelve them until next winter.
