Hi everyone,

Had my A4 Avant 2.0 TDI S-Line for about a year and a half on a lease and covered 12k on the factory fitted Hankooks. They’ve worn quicker than any tyre I’ve ever had and now they’re done.

This is my first lease car; does anybody know if I need to replace them with like for like? Or replace with AO (Audi Orig) tyres?
Is there certain brands etc?

I’ve had a look in my documents but haven’t found anything useful.

Any advice before I replace much appreciated!

I've found Vredesteins to be exactly the same, so soft rubber compound. Regards replacing tyres, it's definitely down to individual lease arrangements so check with the lease company. Chances are they won't stipulate a specific brand, but the tyre must meet the manufacturer's specific load and speed rating for the car.

I doubt they care. They won’t know what tyres were on it when delivered so, as spartacus says, as long as it’s on the correct load/speed rating and size I would imagine you’ll be fine.

I’ve got a mess of mismatching tyres on mine as lease company does not care! that said, I am getting some done Tuesday and they asked what we’re on it now to try and match, but that was mobile fitting so maybe pay more attention! Seems until that point it’s whatever the cheapest premium is they throw on.

I would say 12k on the fronts is around about average for a diesel, I have seen less than 7 before now. Depends upon what kind of driving conditions really. Stop start wears the hell out of front tyres as does abrasive road surfaces...

Thanks for your replies gents.

I’ve just been looking and comparing price and forgot what a minefield it can be!

So many to choose from and a vast difference in price.

Considering changing to XL tyres so they last longer.

ive had a fair few leases returned and they just look for 2mm minimum on the tread. Like others said match the correct size and speed rating and you'll be fine for the lease and insurance.

If your close to the end of the lease buy the cheapest you can, otherwise I've always found Michelin Pilot Sport lasting longest, but they do cost more so do your sums.

I’ve got another 1.5 years left on the lease. Probably doing another 12k in that time. I don’t want to be changing tyres a few months before the car goes back, so might be worth spending an extra £50 and getting tyres that will hopefully last until then!

Lease tyre replacement must be like for like. Of the same quality is what they expect

I’d imagine that so long as they are the same specifications and have a legal amount of tread, it wouldn’t matter if they’re the same tyres that it came with. Let’s face it, most people change brands anyway.

Can you link to an article/evidence?
I think he means stop start traffic accelerating braking rather than smooth motorway . Not stop/start engine fuel saving

Just thought I would add my thoughts to this for what they are worth.
My A4 is a lease (lex) arrived with Bridgestones on, the fronts were changed at 19000, to Conti's, through Kwik Fit who they hold a national contract with.
Asked for the same but was given the Conti's anyway possibly due to stock , which has we stand today have done 18000, and still have 5mm left on them, so good for another couple of thousand yet. The rears incidentally are still at 3mm, and yet to be changed and now done 37500.
Lex won't change until at 2mm.
However last week had a Sline A5 190tdi for 2 days whilst mine was being serviced and thought it a lot quieter, which may be down to the tyres , they were Pirelli from memory, 18" the same size as my A4, which the road noise was noticeably louder when I got back into mine.
Anyway all this rambling brings me to that I wonder if Lex request a harder compound ( and. I would imagine noiser tyre) to get the most miles between having to pay for new ones. Which is I guess what most lease companies would do, to keep their running costs down?

I also think that the older a tyre is the noisier it gets... maybe it’s in my head, but I think it happens:ghost:

It does as the tyre rubber becomes harder as it wears due to heat cycles, sunlight, loosing oils as they wear etc

My last lease didn't follow this line. They didn't care what tyres were on the vehicle as long as the spec was correct. I had decent tyres on it for four years but when it needed a couple a month before handing back (dammit!) they were cheap as chips and not a word said - the car was driven straight from the kerbside to auction anyway after the briefest of checks including tread depth (it was in very good condition).

Just follow the BVRLA Guidelines.

I tested a number of a4's before buying mine and the one on continental tyres was noticeably worse for road noise and was the only car to be fitted with laminated glass upgrade.

I made my comment based on the guide I just received from Audi through the post. But good to know they ain't too strict on it. I may fall into the same predicament when it comes to me returning the car haha

I’ve rang Arval this week regards new front tyres for my Avant 2.0 TDi S Line, I’ve only just ticked over 11k miles in 18 months so surprised at the wear. Currently have the factory Bridgestone Potenza’s fitted.

I pay for maintenance, both fronts are under 3mm but Arval say they will allow them to be changed once at 2mm.

They just advise to drive to my nearest ATS (Arval maintenance contract agreement) to have them changed, but no guidance on brands or budget of the replacement tyre. I wonder if I will have a say in which tyre when I do change them in a month or so.

I would like a recommendation on the quietest tyres from a road noise point of view if anyone has a view please?
