Hi guys. Hope all are well. Been away for a while hence my A6 b6 1.9 TDI wasn't giving a trouble. Despite having 160k on the clock. Until recently.

Since few months I've noticed an oil leak. Took it to the garage, changed the oil sensor - didn't help. Garage said it could be turbo feeding pipe, but were not sure. nevertheless left it is to see what's exactly the issue is.

Today garage suggested to have the turbo change with an aproxa cost of the whole adventure getting into £900.

Wow.

I guess the whole car is of similar value now. But I like the car and I know the engine is bullet proof, so want to keep it.

Guys any ideas how could I minimise the cost of repair? It is still has to be solid and relatable repair though.

Heard something about possible turbo refurbishment?! Is it worth it? How much? Any other options you could suggest please?

Many thanks in advance

They don’t sound very good if they can’t find an oil leak.
If it does need a turbo I certainly wouldn’t pay that much, reconditioning is a far better option.
First of all I would try to determine where the oil is coming from and go from there.

Yeah. They dindtd sound too convincing, but that a type of the guy I think. Softy.

Anyways, they didn't recommend recon part. Is thar really that bad? I've seen many recon companies around but is it worth it?

Frankly not a big fan of spending £1000 .

Thanks

Speak to Andy in this post who recently had a turbo refurbished (and upgraded) and ask his opinion of the process and quality of work.

Thanks all. So far seem the recon part is the option I'm gravitating towards. Now I need to find one reputable and reliable company close to London. Not sure how to turn the whole process around as I drive to work every day with No possibility to keep the car in bay and waiting for the part to be sent back and then installed. Can't even take the part off the vehicle to be honest. Hmm. Any of the turbo shops could do turnaround service within day or two you think? Thinking of driving there and sleep in the hotel whilst the car being repaired.

I’m sure there will be a company that will supply and fit a replacement turbo and taking your old turbo in exchange. I’d expect it to take around two/ three hours to do.

So you'v got an oil leak and a garage are saying to replace the turbo? Thats crazy. Unless the central cartirdge of the turbo has cracked I highly doubt the source of the leak is the turbo.

Much more likely to be turbo hose or EGR. The EGR on my 1.9 has a small leak and it dribbles down making it look like its coming from the turbo area but it isn't. If I were you I'd get a second opinion from another garage, suggesting the turbo itself is the source of the leak would be my very last thought.

Just to add though turbo refurbishment is a good route to go to avoid costs so long as its from a reputable company. I've fitted 3 refurbed turbos in the past, all 3 got daily abuse and all 3 didn't fail. Why they would suggest that refurbed turbos arent any good sounds daft to me.

Thanks lozzy90. Second opinion is what I m now seeking to get. They mentioned hose first time when I brought the car in. Now changed for turbo itself. Didn't remember exactly what they say but apparently there is plenty of oil dripped down under the hood somewhere.

Recon turbos. Where you were getting those from? Any shop recommendations?

Thanks

I use a place called Midland Turbo in Nottingham if there local to you. If not I'm ure other members here can recommend someone closer.
