got my turbo back today after sending it off to be made a hybrid with billet wheel.
It looks amazing they did a really good job at the turbo shop.
Finished fitting it earlier but only had a little drive round the block, obviously I’m not expecting huge gains until it’s mapped but feels a lot stronger and spools a lot happier

A place called the turbo shop in Co Durham. Long way from me but one of the other techs at my work know him.
It’s my standard ko3 o73 il have to find the wheel sizes, I feel kinda silly as I didn’t ask too many questions lol
He said it will cope with a maximum of 300-320bhp.
I will get some facts but all I can say for now is it spools very quickly I just have a couple more things to do before the remap then I’m very optimistic of what it will do

Nice one. What was the cost and how long did you wait to get it sent back to yiu? Should you recommended recon turbo in general? Thanks

The costs he gave me were
350 straight swap
450 hybrid
570 hybrid with billet wheel
I did get a discount though for being a mate of a mate but I don’t know how much.
Yeah I’d always recommend recon the only part that doesn’t get renewed is the housings. It looked better than new

Great, nice bit of info.

Its uncommon for companies to hybrid the longitudinal K03-073 turbo. The Transverse turbo which comes on the A3 8p come a dime a dozen and you can hybrid such turbos to up to around 320bhp so really nice work and not bad for price.

Personally, Im opting for purchasing a Mamba hyrid (Brand new) for £650 all in. Its capable of 300bhp very max but i'll never get that as i'll have to port the manifold etc. ..and dont want running torque levels near max as with my luck i'll bend the rods.

Congrat and looking forward to seeing the final product.

The exhaust manifold? I can do them and I have a spare, interested? Just diy though it’s not something I do as a profession, I’ve done three before and it does make a difference even on standard car/map.

Thank you Andy. How does swap works exactly?
Also why hybrid, Billet - what's the difference?
Not planning on hp increase . Will keep my 130hp. Any reason to upgrade for hybrid/billet wheel?

Many thanks in advance

Yeah very uncommon lol I had to send my own turbo off to have to work done as he didn’t have one to swap so waited 2 weeks

The difference is a hybrid has a bigger compressor wheel so creates more boost also the angle of the blades is different I think. They basically Take your turbo and put the internals from a bigger turbo in it.
And the difference of the billet wheel is it’s one piece of stronger metal rather than 2 pieces pressed together so can take more abuse without failing

Cheers Calum, yes the exhaust manifold. I thought about this but tbh, cant be bothered with it anymore.

My final performance mod will be the bigger turbo and then im calling it a day, then start to save for something else.

Good skill if you can port them :)

So what sort of power will our standard turbos handle, must be able to take a decent increase otherwise there is an awful lot of mapped vehicles out there about to explode their turbos.:welcoming:

Ah well it depends Matt,

You're PD130 yes? A lot different from us 1.8t boys :p

On your turbo, I dont think you can crack 200bhp but @DieselJake can confirm as he would know!

Always a pro a con as I think your clutch can handle more torque than the stock 18.t petrol one.

GT1749 is the turbo upgrade you need as far as I know, think you need larger injectors etc to reach 200hp though. Diesels are hard on clutches because of all the torque. Have a look at Desertstorm's build thread on ukpassats, same engine anyway.

I’m not looking for anything near that, I have the pd 130 so a map will take it to about 170- plenty for what I need, I was just a little concerned that I would put a new turbo on then kill it with a new map. Not worried about the clutch and flywheel as the one that’s in it now has done around 130k with me so can’t have much left in it.

Like you say probably around 165-175bhp for stock turbo, BV43 off a 2.0tdi 170bhp b7 is good for around 200, then theirs other even better turbo's but they all need manifolds and oil feed/return lines. To be honest theirs not allot that can go wrong; ideally you'll also have EGR delete and no cat then clutch and flywheel just see how they go but like you say they've surved their time anyway.

Really it all just comes down to money, either way if your swapping the turbo, clutch and getting a map I wouldn't expect change from 2k unless doing this all yourself, then theirs other stuff like intercooler, exhaust, etc.

This is why I can't sell my car as it owes me too much :playful:

I have the allard EGR deletekit already and did the cat removal today, I’m just going to fit a standard turbo and have a modest map
So I can hopefully replace the smoothness up the Rev range and extra power I lost when the tunic was removed.
