Hi guys,

I've owned my A4 for about 18 months now and I LOVE it. Having seen the recent prices of an S4 B8, they're falling into my bracket and there's one at £12,700 that I'm test driving tomorrow. Same year and rough milage as mine so as long as the engine feels fine it should hopefully be just as good and way more fun!

A couple of things I'm interested in, I never knew about the TFSi issues which affects my car and don't want to be caught out, if I went for an '09 S4 Avant, does anyone know of any issues that I should be aware of?

3L TFSi model.
 
Early (pre 2011) S4's had S-tronic reliability issues,

Other than that the engine itself seems pretty solid. With your's being mapped I wouldn't expect the S4 to feel much faster (or any faster at all) due to the way the power is delivered via the supercharger rather than a small turbo giving a big kick of torque. A remap will soon sort this out though!

Is it a manual or S-Tronic? Manual the tax is £££.

As above, early cars has issues with the S-Tronic gearboxes, namely the mechatronic unit. There is another user a few threads below this who is currently having issues with his 2010 S4 S-Tronic gearbox.
 
It's not just the mechatronics that can go (a few grand to replace), the whole thing can need replaced. Mine needed done and luckily I had an All Components Warranty as the previous owner bought it from Audi and the warranty was transferable. It's £7.5k just to buy the gearbox and closer to £10k for the whole job.

+1 Take the time to read about s-tronic gearbox failures and then assess the risk for yourself.
Another less expensive failure is the crank pulley.
 
I have read on here of there being issues with the post 2011 box but it was inferred not as many. I've also read of there being 2 revisions to the original S4 gearbox.

From what I know the S-Tronic is an auto right? Although tax is horrendous on the manual, that is the one I want.

I test drove a V6T yesterday and it wasn't great as an example. 09, sunroof wouldn't close, boot wouldn't open and when I floored it at one point the exhausts created a massive white cloud.

The rotors were painted red (badly) and this makes me think it wasn't looked after at all.

I'm sure test driving a different one will amend my first impressions.
 
Don't let that put you off bud. I get that Friday Feeling every time i drive mine. A car of that nature has to be well looked after though. I'd be getting the AA or RAC premium Road check as well.

S-Tronic is auto that's correct. Doesn't sound like a great example you saw. Keep looking I'm sure one you like will turn up.
 
I've been thinking like crazy on this and it seems keep looking is the best advice. I found a 2010 at 40k but just out my budget. Logically though, I've decided to wait until that one is within my budget so I'm not getting one on its last legs.

I'll be using it as a daily so I'll be revisiting this in July when I've got some extra funds to get a decent specced, low miles version. Since its not a run around, I should do this the right way.

Glad to hear there isn't really a common issue with the S4 as there is with my A4
 
I'm thinking that the OE crank pulley is more of a risk than we have been thinking it was. Plenty of reports of failures on Audizine. On here @CharlieSAudi has just had one fail at 79K miles. Depending on how it fails it can cause collateral damage to ancillaries.

Yeah mine started with a knocking noise and gradually got louder, you could see the pulley almost wiggling !. luckily I made it off the motorway before it went. It’s when you think about it actually scares the crap out of you what could have happened these are not nice to move with no power steering Lol. Literally 10 mins from my home from a 30 mile journey of the m20.

Half the belt tore of the alternator belt and shredded everywhere but caught mine just before.

Def worth having a look into / changing sooner than later imo.
