Reading this article online and one part which says running low on your tank can damage the fuel filter and fuel pump.
Maybe years ago when cars had metal fuel tanks there could be debris in there but now most/all cars have plastic fuel tanks so very little chance of there being debris in there. Even if there was the fuel filter would catch it, that’s it’s purpose and it certainly wouldn’t damage the filter unless there was an unprecedented amount of debris in the bottom of the tank. It shouldn’t damage the fuel pump, poor reporting or scare mongering or maybe just a slow day at the press?
