Hi All,

I was hoping to get myself a facelift 5 door hatch S3 however insurance seems to be insane, I always had the impression at 21 the price reduces however the cheapest quote Ive been getting is upwards of 4k.

I currently own a 2015 A200 and am paying £1.4k.

Can anyone help with suggestions of potential insurance companies to try? or any other tips how I can reduce this? When i try add a parent as second driver the price actually increases.

Probably not what you want to hear, but my suggestion is to save the money you'll be paying each month on a PCP (probably at least 400) and get a cheaper car and save up for a house! An S3 and insurance at your age over 3 years will cost you at least 20k, that's a deposit on a house! Amazes me how young folks these days are driving 40 grand cars. When I was 21 I had a 700 quid Peugeot 309 XLDT with a 12 inch sub in the boot and I was happy as Larry.

I’m 22 and pay £900 on a pre facelift. Think it’s with elephant or someone can’t actually remember.

As for tips you just have to be honest really. Does depend on where you live etc. I’ve also got 4 years no claims

This topic comes up constantly on here, you can't put a old head on young shoulders, but it's the way the car finance industry and younger folks are going, you can't live there life's for them, l have a 26 year old boy who likes the finer things in life but he's got his own house, but he could curb his spending quite a lot, it's there money at the end of the day
Anyway mate there's a few younger members on here who will hopefully advise

Mum or Dad as policy holder. you as main driver. works a treat & isn't illegal.

You’re not going to get cheap insurance at your age and 1 year NCB on an S3 mate.

I’m 34 and have 2 years NCB, had 1 non fault and 1 fault accident a few years back, my renewal last July with admiral/elephant was £1k.

How are you lot getting these quotes I am 35 10 years ncb no accident no points and had my license since 17 and I cannot get it down from £800.

Hi caner7.5 i recently purchased a audi s3 8v and my insurance price for the year was £949 with admiral car insurance. Thats with 2 additional drivers and £250 excess. Im 21 years old with 3 years no claims give admiral a call see what they say, hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice everyone I think I will try give Admiral or Elephant a ring and hopefully haggle as much I can, its just frustrating because I get im only 21 however on a completely clean license and no claims I would expect the price a bit more resonable.

4k seems far too much to me for insurance but interestingly when looking on quotes for pre facelift S3's the price difference in insurance is huge, it goes from 4k to about 2.2k. Im not sure if its because its a newer model but I didnt think the difference in power was even that substantial.

I'm 23 with Admiral (multicar) with my dad as a named driver and the S3 is costing like £700 or something a year. I've previously had my mum as a named driver, but not this time for some reason.... maybe it brought the price up (not sure, dad deals with it all lol)

Good luck :)

Statistically younger drivers have more accidents, so while you are clean and claim free now you are a greater risk and the premium is adjusted accordingly, at £4K they don’t really want the business at all so have priced accordingly.

Plus there are so many attempted and theft of cars like the S3 l, Golf R etc at the moment.

Renewed my insurance in November on my S3 (3door) and paid just over £600 with Aviva - 22 years old, 4 years no claims and clean licence. Got a discount because of the Aviva drive app which I think was about 20% so that may help (completed the 250 miles needed when I had my previous A3).

One thing that still concerns me and for you to bear in mind is if you have any accidents (even if it isn’t your fault) or pick up any speeding fines I’m pretty sure the insurance would sky rocket to the point where it would be insane to stick with the car.

Mines 600 32 max no claims. Get something with less power!

I’m 20 with 2 years NCB and an A3 1.5 TFSI.

Granted, it’s no S3 but it’s punchy enough for a couple of years until I’m older with more discount to enventually get an S3.

I did however manage to get my policy down from 1.7k to 1.1k (I do 20,000 a year on business, that’s why it’s so high) on a multi-car policy with Aviva with my dad as the main policy holder, no telematics fitted.

I’d recommend getting the normal A3 with the 2.0 (190) Petrol or 2.0 (184) diesel just for a couple of years until your premium comes down, and then think about an S3. You’d still have plenty of power.

I think where you live has a huge bearing on the premium.

The 184 is a great engine.

S3’s are brilliant cars but not worth breaking yourself for. Wait a few years and either save the money for a house or just spend it having fun, you don’t want a car you begrudge paying for.

The thing is, comparing insurance premiums is like comparing apples to particle accelerators.

No two of us on here will ever produce the same results when run through any insurance company's risk algorithm, and that's before taking into account the completely random application of discounts, most of which are thought up on the spot by customer service operatives who couldn't tell an A3 from an aardvark.

There are just too many variables.

Telling you what I pay for my car insurance would only be of any use if you were me, and knowing me, you'd probably be glad that you aren't.

Well said!

If I were you, would I have the dog in your avatar....?

Some of us young folks have well paying jobs which is what enables us to drive 40 grand cars. It doesn’t mean we don’t have houses/apartments either.

I have what I would consider a well paying job, especially for my age.. But as a 23yo for now I have stopped even thinking of a house haha. House prices in the South are stupid and by myself (nobody else to move in with) its like literally impossible unless I had a £100k deposit lol.... so S3 it is ;)

Would be nice to get an RS3, I could but an awful lot of money and someday I'll need a house so got to be half sensible ;) if I lived somewhere cheap what I just said would be a different story though!

Even though now, I couldn't justify spending even 2k on insurance. It just aint worth it imo.

House prices are flying up in south west at the moment, it’s great to see mine going up but the next step is getting bigger and bigger at the same time.

I had the same problem as you mate trying to insure an S3 at 20 it was like £4000 Plus which is silly. So I bought an A3 2.0tdi however got really bored of a diesel tractor
So just Ordered A Seat Leon Cupra 300 in mystic blue. Insurance was £1900 which is ok . Pics up when it arrives very soon :D

I'm 24 and my quote is around £600 for my facelift s3. When I was doing quotes before I ordered to get an idea I was just putting a random address nearby before my own. I found that putting a random address around 4 miles away from my location actually increased insurance by nearly £1000, I've no idea why! :wtf:

That's a good price, I paid £500 odd and I got mine before I turned 31, never made any claims and have been driving since I was 18.

I'm picking up my facelift S3 next week, insured for just under £450 on admiral multicar with £400 excess. I had quotes on confused.com and the like and the best quote i had was esure with £650 per year and £1450 excess (madness??) or £750 and £600 with AXA. I'm 23 but with 6 years no claims. I tried to add my girlfriend as a named drive, she's 22 and 3 years no claims and cheapest I can get is £1400, admiral wouldn't even quote! She drives a 66 plate mini cooper S and insurance for her on that is £500 a year, so it makes no sense!

I am 29 years old with 7 years no claims and my insurance is £820 with a £100 excess.

Let's be realistic and pretend I am an insurance broker.

Audi S3 = Will likely get nicked one day.
Audi S3 Driven by a 21 year old = Easy target for somebody to drag you out of the car or threaten you when you pull over somewhere.
Audi S3 with 306bhp + 21 year old = Ragged around constantly = High risk of accident
Audi S3 with possible unreported remap + 21 year old driver = Very liekly to be raced around and higher risk of an accident
Audi S3 value = £28K + dependant on year and mileage etc.

The above is based on the fact I don't know you, just like the insurer.

I am not surprised your quote is £4k if I am being honest.
I wouldn't expect sub £2k quotes until you are around 25 with 4-5 years no claims

Location is probably the highest factor of all this. My friend is 28 and passed his test last month. Insurance in his home town of Luton is over £3k cheapest. If he keeps everything the same, and changes his address from Luton to Bedford (maybe 20miles away), it goes down to £1200 a year.
