Looking at swapping my manual s3 for a new DSG Golf R and wondered if anyone had any opinions of the difference. Obviously DSG is the major one

My son has had both and he prefers the S3/TTS engine and the fact the engine seems to pull better from lower revs. The DSG gearbox will be less of a headache if you have the car remapped. The newer cars respond better to a remap with 360bhp being available with just a stage 1.
You are having a new car but the early 7R suffered from turbo problems in case you decide to save some cash.
S3 gives you genuine sound whereas the 7 R has piped in sound.
Lots more to play with on the 7R regarding settings.
Some people, myself included prefer the driver involvement with a manual. With a DSG you just sit there and push the accelerator unless you fancy manual mode. So everyone can have a go at Santa Pod with a DSG.
The manual 7R can get through a clutch in 7000 miles as my son found out. Not good news and he did not use the car for drag racing.

Thanks for the reply , I prefer the s3’s looks wise but I think with options they are just to expensive now. I am going to test drive both anyway to make certain. I like the fact the digital dash is standard on the golf . Good to have the info in my mind for when I go test drive so I can ask relevant questions .
With regards to the manual , I have had a few loans cars from Audi and they have been DSG , I haven’t driven a performance based car with my be so will be interesting to see what is like

Been thinking along the same lines but......how does it compare with an S3. Mines stage 1 and think I might miss the grunt.

Well I had stage 1 on my s3 and I don’t miss it really. The mini handles so much better and the turbo kicks in early. Also, sport mode is mental! I think because it’s lighter it feels rapid. You should definitely test drive one, great fun
