Alright guys,

As above I keep thinking about selling the s3. It just doesn’t give me that wow factor. Just had it remapped and yes it is fast but I just feel something is missing. I very nearly got a mk6 Golf GTI but wanted the Audi as it is faster. However I don’t think faster is always better! I just want something lighter and more fun I guess. Help!!

Well I’ve spent quite a bit trying to make it better but it doesn’t seem to be working! My point is maybe I would be happier with a lighter fwd car like the gti. I’m thinking of getting some ARB’s to help with the handling but again it’s just throwing more money at the car. I guess I’m just asking for other s3 owners opinions/or tell me to snap out of it!

Why don't you just get an RS3, GTR. Or the new type F jag all these will give you the power , comfort and handling you want

Because I can’t afford them!
Ok dokie , might be worth not putting ARB's on the car if your really thinking off selling it and getting a GTI best save that money for that car you know think

Yeah I see what you mean. Just had an APR remap so not sure if I’d get a refund. However if the ARB’s help improve the car then I might not sell it.

You will miss the grip if you switch to FWD, especially in the wet, or pulling out with some lock on. Fit the ARB and get your car to a specialist to make sure it's running correctly. If you think adding a generic map is spending a bit, take a read of Alex's loooong thread lol.

Also, the mk6 Golf is still on the old chassis so only around 75kgs lighter. You need a mk7 to benefit from any significant weight reduction.

actually you can.
if you map your car and you're not satisfied in the first 30 days, you can get a refund.
so i hope you're still in those 30 days

Fair point I guess. It actually weighs 1318kg. So 137kg lighter!

You can get the S3 to be a very fun and capable car, but it will cost a not an insignificant amount. Other than bushes here and there, my sportback is pretty much where I want it from a handling/braking perspective for an excellent road car or a very occasional track, but it was not cheap. It is possible ot go further, but it is mega money for marginal return, so we're getting into an area where a dedicated track car makes more sense.

If you want fun at lower speeds, get a Mini Cooper S - poky little engine to match the handling and does not cost too much. It's no match for a sorted S3 though.

what is the current specification of your car? Maybe we can offer some ideas based on what your current set-up is?
For example,

1) Do you have manual or DSG?
2) What engine/transmission/suspension/braking upgrades do you have already?

I think anti-roll bars will be a good upgrade to make the S3 a lot more fun and go-kart like. I've read many a post on here where people were saying that uprated anti-roll bars are one of the best mods they've done on their cars. I nearly went for them, but didn't want to plunge for it in the end as I was worried about whether it would affect the ride comfort and tbh I'm not 100% satisfied with my current shock and springs set-up, so stiffening it up further would probably annoy me on my daily commute over really crappy road surfaces. Plus I was already paying for a new steering rack, so didn't want to spend any more. That said though, they are often advertised as ensuring unimpaired spring comfort and most people are happy with them.

I’ve got a manual, it’s got a stage 1 APR map on it, that’s it. I think ARB’s have to be done for me! Had an ep3 type r before and that handled brilliantly.

Yeah I love the EP3 type r myself and it's clear where that desire for lightness and fun comes from! Are you in a position to do some weight reduction to your car? Lightweight wheels are a good place to start.

I don't have an S3 myself, but I think the common route that owners go, that I've seen, entail:
  • Coilovers
  • ARBs
  • Whiteline anti-lift kit
  • Hunter alignment
As for power, that is up to you on how crazy you want to go with that. Plenty of options available for that. I think you may have only scratched the surface with respect to what the engine is capable of. But then again you may be perfectly happy with that, as it is still very capable with just a stage 1 map. I think it becomes a slippery slope when you start reading the other threads on here..........

The weight of the S3 over an EP3 alone would make a huge negative difference, so you're comparing a more focused, lighter car to a pretty porky one that's focused at a slightly different segment and one that, out of the box, doesn't have that much of a power to weight advantage.

What the S3 has is way more grip than you would need at anything below Stage 3 (hybrid or big turbo power levels) and that, budget allowing, allows for a very potent car.

@DJ_26 is spot-on as far as handling mods go. One thing I would add is suspension and engine mount bush upgrades go a long way to making it come alive when at the limit. I only have the uprated dogbone mount insert and that has made a noticeable difference to how the power is delivered.

One of the biggest weaknesses of a stock S3 are the front brakes - OEM kit is completely inadequate for the weight of the car and you can easily run out of braking ability during a spirited drive on a back road, let alone on a track. Again, many options here to fit different budgets, but cheapest and most effective mod would be uprated disks, pads and braided lines all round.

All these mods cost a significant amount of money, so what your decide ultimately will depend on what you want more out of a car and your budget. An EP3 is more fun out of the box on a dry sunny day, but the S3 is a well-rounded car that can eat up miles easily, stay civilised, but can also can be made to surprise much more 'sporty' cars if your pocket allows. The look on one guy's face the other week was priceless, after he got very embarrassed in his brand new Focus RS three times by a 9 year old shopping trolley :)

Yeah I see what you mean. I probably won’t add any more power as it’s already rapid I think. Handling mods are what is required next I feel. I sold the civic because of the lack of torque on the motorway so it’s pros and cons really. When I came back from a fairly long run recently I was impressed with the power of the stage 1.

Well, you have the right approach - most people just talk about how to get to Stage 2+ as fast as possible rather than have a car that is nice to drive. ARBs and decent coilovers, followed by 4-wheel alignment will do wonders to how it feels.

If i read the totally disguised wants here correctly you simply have to start with the base car correct and i dont think its an A3/S3 for you.
You need something light like an MX5 or a fiat Abarth

It’s ok I’m trying to stick with it! I think I’d miss the torque if I got something like those! I’m always changing my mind.

Coming from someone considering an s3 I think everything is a compromise.

I have an a3 140 tdi Quattro and I like the refinement and the way it handles, with a bit more pace I think an s3 with a few mods would make the perfect road car.

Maybe to comfortable and lack the feeling of speed for you but as a daily an s3 really appeals to me.

Maybe not be the fastest cars or most involving but as a package ticks a lot of boxes.

Maybe it's because my other cars are the other way to an s3 with a high 13 second 1/4 fiat uno turbo that will make you hold tight at low speeds, and a low 12 second pulsar gtir which you will break the speed limit every time you drive it and is really involving to drive.

A well set up s3 I think all round would make a great road car, with comfort and refinements as well as enough pace to hold its own.

Raw and involving is fun but daily is tiring, depends what you are doing with the car imo.

Fair points there!

Best A3 i ever had was the 3.2, as a fun car with some stomp its better than an S3, you really cant beat CC's over a turbo.

A om606 in a stripped out body looks stock as rock and chews 4**,5**bhp cars in black smoke know that's what am talkin about

Is see where your comin from but it does give a nice straight 6 rumble

There is a om605 aswell and that's a 5 pot

I think I’ve found the car! Golf R! Sadly I can’t afford one!

Get it to stage 2+ and see after that, it's a completely different car on a 2+ tune and often people including myself think it's the way the s3 should have been from the factory. Add a set of coilovers on top to help out the handling and you'll have a fun car.

Can be done quite cheap but cheap isn't always best.

I recently test drove a Mini Cooper S JCW and fell in love with it, looks like this is my next car!

I test drove one and they are good in the dry, but in the wet they are next to useless with all that power going through the front wheels.

Mod your S3 and invest in some decent tyres and you will never have traction issues.

Yeah I see what you mean but it was just really fun, great steering feel, lightweight and nimble. Looks like I’ve made my mind up. I just won’t drive as hard in the wet.

Its probably the only car you could have chosen that will be more expensive to maintain and will go wrong more than your S3 :) My neighbour has just had a new engine in his at 70k miles. Apparently quite normal.
