I've got a 2015 S3 8V. 20K. Manual. Can the clutch realistically cope with a stage one remap. And if it can, which is best? Ive seen from £199 to circa £800 for quoted stage 1. Would rather not have to upgrade the clutch at this point.

If you goto a good tuner they will tailor the map to your specifications. Somebody like Rick at Unicorn @Rick @ Unicorn Motor Dev. provides maps of varying performance for the same car dependent on the owners requirements. With clutches it's not so much how big the headline torque figure is, although of course this does make a difference it's how that torque builds and whether it's delivered in a smooth way.
Have a look at Ricks Facebook site there are several newer 7R Golfs mapped with various levels of tune.

Audi provide a good margin on the cars capabilities and although any remap will impose extra strain on a cars mechanicals sensible tuning certainly mitigates any potential issues.

There needs to be a little caution with the manual and tuning.
Mechanically all the evidence suggests the motor/gearbox/drive train etc are easy strong enough to take a bit of tuning but there are a decent number of cases where the manual clutch cannot hold a standard stage1........in fact look on this forum/VW vortex etc and there are plenty cases where the standard clutch appears to have failed early without any tuning at all so I think the OE clutch is questionable.

Given yours is at 20k (mine is at 24k) without issues probably suggests either you or your use isn't causing the clutch any problems. I have toyed with the idea of stage1 and would either be going for a plug and play JB1/4 with a soft spot until after 3k rpm or a custom tune which considers the manual clutch e.g. steady as she goes until maybe 3-4k rpm then onwards and upwards. Unicorn definitely appear to one of the better ones and will be on my list once the OE warranty runs out.

I’m in the same situation now, undecided on weather to get it done. Would have to be a low torque map at first to see how long the clutch lasts. Heard good things about rick@ unicorn, would defiantly go there. However fast the car is, we always want more I guess

Price of a remap

Plus a clutch.

It's the only way on these chocolate clutches. I have my parts to go stage 2. Even stage 3 if I buy the turbo, but I have to factor in the clutch before I do anything to it.

What's the going rate for a non chocolate clutch?

Between 500 and over a thousand.
Me personally, because I plan to go stage 3 will get a 4 paddle which is in the higher price range from what I can find.

Echo as above really. I have an APR Stage 1 and its fantastic, noticeably quicker but the clutch is starting to slip after about 1000 miles or so on the map. Similar mileage to you, mines on 18k.

The only other thing, which i think they fixed by 2015 is the early ones had a poor turbo and the shaft was snapping...

I'm running the Sachs 4 paddle clutch and is fine. The standard clutch will slip that's for sure but once it's done your good to some strong torque figures around Stage 3 possibly higher.

It's the 4 paddle I'm interested in!

Did you fit it yourself?

No got it fitted by a local Audi specialist all in for £800.

Well I'm sure VRS Northampton thave them or had them for £550 ish then £300 for DMF if needed and labour and there quote last year was £830 without DMF and £1200 with. I didn't change the DMF as it was fine and had only covered 8k.

I will contact them.
Cheers.

Glad I logged back in to the forum.. I am considering Stage 1 and some upgrades to my S3..either that or a new car but I can't justify it for driving 7 miles a day. ha..

I had my clutch replaced under warranty at approx 17k miles..I am still dubious if the new one will handle extra power. Any recommendations on which type to upgrade too? I am only going stage 1. don't need any more power than that. :)

I've gone for the sachs organic rather than the 4 paddle. There isn't a massive cost difference so decide now!

I'm sticking stage 1 so just went for the standard sachs one.

The stadard one will handle the power initially but will eventually slip. I had 18k on my standard clutch, felt fine standard power but only lasted about 2000 miles before starting to slip with the stage 1. To be fair it was only just starting to slip but wanted it sorted before it got worse.

My clutch didn't last long at all and changed at 8500k. I was running low torque map at the time but I did have all the supporting mods and more for stage 2. The biggest difference was the CTS elbow pipe, it was giving it more torque and slipping.

Mine lasted about 5 miles after a Quantum tune then it started to slip with 16k on the clock, but my trying to do launch starts might not have helped it. I went for the Sachs organic high performance clutch which behaves like the stock one but is harder to push the pedal.

mine started to slip badly with a DTUK at 3 + 3

so i know it won't stand a chance on stage 2!

Mine slipped on the DTUK and standard with the CTS elbow and forge carbon intake.
