2.0 TFSI Known Oil Consumption problem - 2015 ongoing thread (2009-2011 models)

It's very possible. It's mostly the early services that have been missed and it's unusual for someone to go for the first two years with Audi serivicing then just... not at all? I hope that's the case and will raise it if they say anything.

The other issue I'm thinking I'll encounter is that this year I asked the garage I go to for a bit more tougher oil that'll stand up to a fight. I hada 3 week road trip including a 'ring visit, had minimal space (car camping) so didn't want to carry oil and the like. They went with 10W40 which worked great, oil in the UK dropped by .5L but after that even on the 'ring didn't have a single drop loss. Just curious if to them 10W40 would be an issue, but the car has been running better on it for sure.

Update - I'm now taking part in the initial oil consumption test - They gave me a courtesy car yesterday and I picked mine back up this morning.

Was hit with a bill of £80 for the oil they used, the Diagnostics and insurance on the Courtesy car. Little bit steep but if I get it signed off for repair I don't mind too much. (although me putting a litre in 3 days ago made me a little salty)

I'm a LITTLE sceptical that my oil level is now showing as FULL - which when I normally throw a litre in doesn't - so hoping they've not put more than a litre in like they say they have. Might just be past dodgy mechanics giving me the jitters though

Will update when I send it back in ! (My light has been coming on at 640 miles consistently)

Why did they charge you £80? I was told over the phone that there won't be any charge for the test or courtesy car. They told me "any costs will be informed before any work is done". If they tell me that I have to pay I'll be telling them to stick it where it doesn't shine!

Hi,

First time here, although been signed up a while.

Just came to see if there was a B8 S4 Avant buying guide and saw this. Currently have a 20092.0 TSI Scirocco, which must be the same engine, and the last few months it’s used a little more oil. Then tonight I noticed an oilly smell, and the CEL came on with P1071 (lean code).

I’m guessing this is all related, I haven’t had a good look yet but guessing the PCV needs replacing but after reading this looks like it’s a bigger issue than that.

Has anyone had any luck with VW at all? My wife’s manager’s husband is the workshop manager at the local Audi so wondering if they could solve the issue FOC?

Dunno tbh. I was expecting to pay for the consumption test anyway

I can now confirm that mine failed the test and I'm now awaiting a response from Audi UK on how much they'll cover costs wise.

The guy at the dealership had done several of these in South Africa previously, and said it was WAY easier there. Once the issue was confirmed, it got fixed. In the UK they have to jump through all kind of hoops.

Hi all, I have a 2011 A4 premium plus S-line and it is just over 150K kms and using more oil. It has had stage 1 of the oil consumption done before I bought it as I am a second owner. They told me stage 1 replaces some parts and I am booked for stage 2 of the testing this week. The dealer told me there is a "known" issue, and that Audi has extended its warranty to 130,000 kms, and while I was in contact with Audi Canada, they said get the testing done and we will go from there. I am paying $320 plus tax for the second test andI have read this article and searched online and found that some have gotten a good will from Audi and 100% of the costs covered. This would be awesome if it happens to me. We have had an oil change at 151,1947 kms and since then added 3 litres of oil and are at 155,ooo which is in my opinion excessive, I am supposed to get 1000kms per every .5 litres topped up. The engine light is one with piston 3 misfiring so we changed the spark plugs and ignition coils and now are getting multiple piston misfires. Also noticed some oil residue on piston 3 ignition coil and in and around the piston ring.

Here's hoping!

Lads, as previously mentioned pages and pages ago, before going to the dealer with your oil usage grumbles, phone audi UK first and get them on board.
This way, you shall not be mucked about, because the boss is on your side!

Hey @CHEZ

Interesting point, Although I'd almost be cautious now of ******* off the guy I'm dealing with at Audi Oxford if I was to appear to go over his head?

He's now contacting Audi UK on my behalf.

I'd welcome your thoughts though !

I can see where you are coming from but I am sure he is a big boy and handle being told what to do lol.
I went down this route when I was having oil consumption issues, contacted audi, they done everything on my behalf and ultimately I got a brand new engine fitted.
That's just my version, other people have varying degrees of success and work carried out as the many pages on this thread can testify.
I just wanted to go the full on method to obtain a result as I know how much of a ball ache it can be trying to get a dealer to act on a warranty claim, (previous experience with trying to claim for rust on my old B7 A4)
Good luck by the way

I had bad luck in my case, wasn't able to have the test done on my car. Unfortunately, I have a couple oil leaks (which I kinda knew about but thought they were just drippage from poor top up) so this would apparently give a false reading, which I suppose makes sense.

Took it to my local garage who said not to bother, leaks are minimal and worry when it's on my drive.

So i got charged for the stage two test as the first stage was done prior to me owning the vehicle. $280CAD and I've travelled 638 KMs and the add oil warning came on.

Going in tomorrow as this definately is excessive oil consumption. Im not sure what the gauge reading is similar too, when topped up 100% from the dealer to add oil warming light of a max of 1L oil. Even if the gauge is based on 0.5L i still should have travelled 1000KMs. And if its 1L difference from full to add warning then I should have travelled 2000KMs based on the 0.5L top up for every 1000KMs travelled.

I am confident AUDI CANADA is going to assist us, they were willing to work with me from the start despite being over the warranty and extended KM due to the known issue.

Test shows 1.52 litres per 1000KMs over three times the regular amount. Now its all up to AUDI to save the day!

So, good news on my side.

I took the advice of a fellow forum poster and contacted Audi UK directly to chase up my case (After a full calendar month) and got myself a contact there that started to chase things through.

After sending them and Audi Oxford my service history in full (which had all but one full audi services - The other being a service on time just not with a red Audi stamp) - I have now had full confirmation that they're going to pay the full amount for the repairs which also include the Chain link and tensioner!

I couldn't ba happier tbh. They've taking it in on November 13th and want it for a full week for which I'll have a courtesy car.

Really pleased with the result, Audi UK and Audi Oxford have been awesome all the way through

Very good. Happy to hear that. I am in the court process with Audi Turkey. Opened a file last month. Still chasing. Regards,

Audi Oxford and awesome. You mean Oxford Mississippi, right?

Jokes aside, glad you are all sorted. Looking at getting a 2.0tfsi myself and it gives me hope.

Hey @CHEZ

Thanks :) the only reason I didn't call you out specifically on that last post was that I was posting on my phone and couldn't find the damn original post. But yeah, your advice was SPOT ON. REALLY appreciate that dude. Huge thanks.

Audi Oxford has been absolutely awesome, but having Audi UK chasing up missing things seemed to really bolster my whole case and get it sorted much quicker with a perfect end result.

Confirmed that it's all booked in for Nov 13th for a full week.

Make sure they refund your £80 for the oil test ! Also the fix is a new engine or a rebuild. In my situation photographs were taken of the engine once stripped down and sent to Audi uk who decided based on condition what the repair would be.Mine was a full rebuild, but sometimes the damage is so bad that they replace the whole engine.

I have now driven 2k since repair without any movement on engine oil gauge, previously that would have used 3-4 litres!

Got the car back this morning and drove the ~50 miles to work.

All good except the car is now pulling heavily to the left.

Minor gripes, after having the car for a week, they haven't washed it (Which they normally would), didn't adjust my windscreen washers (I asked them to specifically) and I'm currently reading oil at half. Which is odd considering they fixed an oil issue! You would have thought they'd fill it up ! They've also not resent my service reminder. Hoping a service isn't necessary after a full engine rebuild.

Still, I'm very happy that it's done and I can relax - once they get back to me on the car pulling to the left that is.

Eurgh. Scrub that.

Car broke down yesterday with a failed fuel injector. Audi Oxford recovered me thankfully and it's back with them for the weekend. The fuel injector isn't part of the rebuild apparently so I'm waiting to see if they'll do the £500+ work as a good will.

Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Got an A6 S line as a courtesy car, silver lining :)

Hey Fellow Forum goers

I could use some advice if you're willing

Looks like my case has been passed on from the Audi UK Oil Consumption specialist and therefore they are unlikely to cover the cost of my Fuel Injector replacement as they've deemed it unrelated. This means they're now speaking to Audi Oxford to see if there is a good will gesture they would be willing to do in my case. which I doubt there is, afterall, it's why I escalated to Audi UK in the first place.

So, to the advice. My current situation is above, but in summary - Engine rebuild done at 100% comp (During which a faulty water pump was found and charged at £220) . 4 Days after getting the car back it died on my way home. Recovered back to Audi Oxford (Their cost) and given a courtesy car to go home in. Diagnosed as a faulty fuel injector, cost to replace being £771. Audi Oxford have given me "warranty" pricing for it due to my circumstances and reduced it to £551. Escalated to Audi UK and have waited 1.5 weeks for a response (which I got this morning by calling in myself as it goes). in the meantime Audi Oxford have GONE AHEAD with the repairs despite a call AND email stating that I planned to escalate to Audi UK and to not do anything without my go ahead.

So with all of the above, does anyone know where I stand legally ? I assume if I wanted to play hard ball, I could tell Audi that I want to go elsewhere to get the Fuel injector done to save money and therefore they need to reverse the fix? My worry there would be that they could then play hardball in return and charge me for the recovery of the car, plus other charges they've clearly waived during this whole process (Courtesy car insurance excesses, Water pump is still not paid for or mentioned etc.)

Would be great to get some advice on this from anyone who knows where I stand legally.

Cheers!

a quick google brought up the AA's site:
"If the garage has done extra, unauthorised work, they may remove any unauthorised replacement parts fitted provided the old parts are properly re-installed on your vehicle. If this is no longer practicable, the garage should bear the loss."
https://www.theaa.com/driving-advice/legal/car-repairs#authorise

if you're goign to stay w/ that garage i don't know if it would be worth trying to keep them sweet and say offer to pay half of it ~ however, given they had calls and a mail [good job you have that for evidence!] i find it really odd that they went and did that work, it almost sounds like they're trying to sting you for some extra costs and you'd be better off telling them to stick it and go find another Audi dealer.

Thanks @wolfie138 - Appreciated.

I guess it's one of those "play it by ear" type situations. I get the feeling that the service manager at Audi Oxford is very much on my side (He was the one who called me to tell me they've done the work without authorisation, so I'll see what he has to say later today.

Ok I've opted to pay the money and get my car back (As much as I'm enjoying the A6)

Delved into more detail on the whole case, and it turns out Audi Oxford actually paid 10% towards the full rebuild and have discounted the Fuel Injector too. So I really shouldn't complain too much.

They also fully recovered my vehicle when the Injector failed which I haven't charged for.

I've requested all paperwork on the rebuild as well as ensuring they have fixed the tracking and stamped my service book and disabled my service due light.

I think, all in all, £557 for all the work that has been done is ok. I'll live with it.

Good luck to all of you, hopefully, my case has been at least interesting to anyone going through this in the future. Overall I'm very happy with how Audi UK and Audi Oxford have dealt with it all.

Given the costs involved it is not a massive financial hit. Glad it is all sorted for you mate. As someone living in Oxford who has to use Oxford Audi it gives me some hope!

@Tashfeen Yeah I've found them OK.

TBH I would steer clear of dealers like this as a whole mainly because I always find they're too keen to fix issues that might not need fixing, if you know what I mean. I do have several friends who've dealt with Audi direct (not Oxford specifically) who have had these issues too.

Would like to give you guys my story so far, given I have a 1.8t there’s not much diffrence..

I started having oil problems early this year but being 6 months out of warranty I decided (as any normal person who didn’t do their reasearch) to go to my local VAG garage who i’ve used for years.. It all started when my car went into limp mode, one new cyclinder and she was good to go.. 1 month passed, 3l of castrol got burned, went back and they told be i had a leak top end, so had the head removed and timing chain and cam belt parts replaced and resealed... This cost me just shy of £1000 at this point we believed the problem was sorted, no leak from around the cyclinder heads so I had a remap... laughing!! the car was sound a great increase in power and tourque.. A few days passed of relativly hard driving and my heart sunk when she went into limp mode again.. and cyclinder and 1l of castrol... End of the line, i took my car off the coilovers, returned it to standard, the garage payed for my cyclinder and the coilovers as good will because they saw how much distress I was in and we together went on with the process pf selling my car, as a perfect running car, for which it was, if you didn’t mind paying £500 in cyclinders and oil... So i came to the forum to see if this was comon, jesus, every man and his dog had it... One phone call to Audi UK reported my problem, week later I was down Audi Stafford under going a oil consumption test for which I told them, it’s going to miserably fail so they booked the car in the following week regardless of the actual test.. lo and behold the light came on the Sunday night before she was meant to be going in, Monday was a long day.. I got the phone call at 5pm with the “do you want the good or the bad news” question.. bad news please (to much heart ache had been had to this point i felt numb, pride and joy was all down to this) ... we can’t do anything until Thursday (tomorrow) good news.. I’m 100% covered, Audi have told me the repair is £7.5k so a new engine... Turn around is 2 days and the boys in the shop will be working till the last hours on Saturday to get it back to me before christmas.. To say christmas has come early is an understatement, i’m one happy chap, although I’ll say one thing, don’t be affraid to go back to a dealer like I was, kinda wish I could get all those repairs refunded, but you live and learn and hopefully she’ll be a perfect runner for years to come! Merry Christmas

Phil, far be it from me to suggest your garage is stringing you along, but....i find it very odd that they did cylinders and stuff w/out suggesting the big known oil problem, especially since a 2nd cylinder failed so quickly. secondly, "Turn around is 2 days" - well if it is, they're working like mad basts, cos the work on mine took 5 days, and as far as i know i just got new pistons, not all the extra other stuff some others here got like tensioners etc.

anyway, i guess it's of little interest to you since [i hope] you'll have a fully functioning car back at no cost to yourself, but there's just somethings about that tale that don't ring true to me, given my experiences. but maybe i'm maligning them unfairly...?

Afternoon all - am new to all this but as the owner of a 2010 A5 211 TFSI have been avidly reading all the posts - thanks all for the great info.

My car has recently been through the 2-part Audi oil consumption test, which I booked before I was even aware of a broader problem. This week I had completed the 620 miles and took it in for the second part - on the dashboard oil gauge it was showing half full when I took it in. Hatfield Audi has now asked me to drive a further 500 miles and then bring it back in. When I got the car back it is still showing half full - so they haven't topped it up, and they've been a bit cagey about their explanation.

Has anyone else been asked to repeat the test and if so, what does it mean? My guess is that I am a marginal case and they want to test again before Audi coughs up for the repair. But why 500 rather than 600 miles this time? Any advice gratefully received.thanks

GB

So my ride is finally back and fixed. The whole process took about 6 months with the bouncing around back and forth. They told me at the dealership it needed this and needed that, and I almost said enough keep the car we don't want it, but then they put my mind at ease. The estimate after testing and all that was 8900 plus tax, and with all the extra small fixes after AUDI Canada paid its 70% I ended up playing 2350 plus about 500 for the tests. 3000 for a new engine is not bad!!! Just stay on top of it and tell them what you want! You are paying them with your hard earned money so be persistent!!

Winning!

Updated complete story to date.

In Sept of 2017, I contacted the manufacturer of the vehicle (#AudiCanada) for assistance in repairs to the engine, as it was experiencing a check engine light with misfire codes of P0300 and P0303. The agent there was very helpful and recommended testing for the vehicle to be done at the dealership (#SouthgateAudi) who also confirmed the known issue of excessive oil consumption for the vehicles of this make, model and year.

Through the testing of the engine for excessive oil consumption ordered by @AudiCanada, it was determined at Southgate Audi the vehicle was consuming 1.52L of oil per 1000KMs traveled, over 3 times the maximum allowable amount of 0.5L per 1000KMs as recommended by the manufacturer.

Audi Canada agreed to pay 70% of the repairs to the vehicle and I paid the remainder which was fixed in January of 2018.

I picked up the vehicle and was told by @SouthgateAudi that "it is basically a brand new engine" and "good to go" with 1 year warranty on the repairs.

After two weeks of driving the vehicle the check engine light came back on, and in speaking with southgate audi they said if the car is driving fine, not to worry. I advised him that there was a slight shake in the car, and maybe it was due to snow and road conditions with it being winter. This was over a few calls and lastly that there was a slight intermittent vibration at idle. The check engine light disappeared and then reappeared over the next few weeks.

We finally took the vehicle in to Southgate #Audi, where the repairs were made, and had to pay another diagnostic fee of $169 to determine that the same cylinder in piston 3 was still misfiring(intermittent faults). They then advised me it was too bad they were not aware of the misfires at the time of the repairs for excessive oil consumption they performed in January 2018, and that it would cost more labour and more work to fix the problem, and that the misfire could be from anything, even a third party business (B*R* Automotive) who performed the final oil change before the check engine light initially came on in 2017, or the aftermarket spark plugs and coil packs which were installed.

I have all the paperwork and invoicing for the repairs, however Southgate @audi is claiming that the repairs to the piston for the misfire, and the excessive oil consumption issue are not linked, and that they are separate issues requiring separate work, namely more money from me.

The initial issue I had is still ongoing, and I was expecting the vehicle to be repaired.

During the time of repairs and prior to payment, I was advised by southgate audi of all extra separate issues with the car, including transmission leaks, clutch liveability at 30 - 40%, bolts that their mechanic broke off and needed replacing at my cost due to them being fused to the engine. I decided to let go of the car as it was going to be too costly to repair. They advised me that the work is almost complete and that they want to keep me and my wife happy and in the Audi family, and even gave me breaks on the repair parts and labour.

Now that the initial problem persists, and after payment for the repairs, Southgate Audi is denying knowledge of the piston misfire issue at time of repair for excessive oil consumption.

So I have had a 2010 avant for two months, with the 1.8 TFSI engine. In that time I have had to completely refill oil twice. Seems to love the oil.

So is there a fix? Or is just put up and shut up?

There’s plenty of info in this post. First thing to do is alert your local garage.

My head hurts after reading 36 pages!

It seems some dealers charge a contribution if it fails the test. I’ve booked in for 6th April for an oil consumption test. I have a nigglying doubt it will fail as I have to do some motorway miles (approx 300 miles) during April, and apparently its best to avoid them?

I bought the car mid January from a independent non Audi dealer with a 3 month warranty. They won’t be interested, so hopefully Audi will pay if it fails. It does have Audi Service stamps, so will see.

I knew mine was going to fail so just for good measures I drove at least three junctions of the M4 in fourth and fifth gear. That sorted it out!

Stage 1 done. Now need to drive 600 miles or so.

Bit concerned I have to drive 300 motorway miles, and it won’t use the oil like it does. Will see what happens.

congrats, you've probably just put a load of needless stress and wear on other components.
