Is there any physical difference between the standard fob and the advanced key?

I have the keyfob which you press in to the dash to start the car and the door handles seem to have the sensors to detect when you're holding the handle but it seems nothing happens when I put my hand there.

Is there a definitive way of knowing if they hey I have is an advanced key?

I think if you have the advanced key, you don’t need to push it into the dash to start the car, you just need to have the key with you

That's not an advanced key. An advanced key stays in your pocket and you press a button on the console to start the engine?

Maybe be happy that your low tech key might just be the safer option until the motor industry sharpens up its "anti-theft" act?

I agree

I agree totally. What is the point of advanced key, other than as a device for Audi and its dealer network to prise another £600 out of gullible people?

I couldn’t be without Advanced Key, had it on my last 3 cars. I’d also rather that my family house didn’t get broken into with my family asleep to get at the keys. If they want the car, they’ll take it whatever the security. If Advanced key means they can take the car without threatening the safety of the family that’s money well spent.

^wtf, all they need do is put a reader against your front door then they just drive off and you like that as a "feature"!

TX.

I too have and will always spec it. Great feature and the memory seats and mirrors are excellent on a shared car. Not as good as our BMW that does climate, nav, drive dynamics and radio too though!

So much BS going around on the security. Bottom line is they can smash your door in and take the keys or smash your window and code a key (the two most common techniques) advanced key or not.

Its not a feature. Let’s not be silly.

If someone is going to steal my car I’d rather they try and do that than actually break in to my house where my kids sleep. Im sure most people would. I don’t pay for Advanced Key for that reason and nor am I gullible as suggested earlier in this thread.

I would rather an advanced key. I had it on my Peugeot and touching the handle locked it which was really convenient.

Those worrying about security, Disklok is the answer. Instead of a pathetic bar it's a full on disc for your steering wheel plenty of pictures online of one that's been attacked on a defender but car still on the drive as they gave up.

Never without mine, even left engine running sometimes with it on just for ease. Soon as I get an S4 I'll probably end up spraying my lock to match.

I'd think the fix for anyone not wanting their home broken into to "collect" their desirable car, is, if you are serious about family safety don't have a desirable car on show outside? I keep mine in my garage, for many reasons including if some one thinks it is still, at its age desirable. When its out and about I park sensibly, have the OBD port blocked and fit Disklok.

@Phill_ I never for one moment took your first post to mean you select the advanced key specifically because the allegedly inferior security puts your family at a lower risk. To be honest, my scepticism over it has nothing to do with security. It's because I cannot for the life of me see what's advanced about it or what problem it solves.

I've had two lots of friends who have forgotten their advanced key was in their pocket when their spouse dropped them off and drove off. One of them was being dropped off at the airport. By the time her husband realised the car was two tons of useless metal she and the key had gone through passport control. When they were telling me about it afterwards, one of them actually said "if only there was a handy place to store the key in the car to prevent that happening....". It took all of my powers of self control not to laugh out loud.

I'm old enough to remember when all cars had an ignition key and separate starter button. Combining the two into one mechanism was considered a step forward, and that was in the 1960s.

I keep my key in my pocket all the time when I’m driving, that way if someone drags me out of the car at traffic lights they can’t re start the car once they’ve turned it off

Wouldn't think you'd need bother the OBD port with a Disklok :box:

I think that it is essential for me to make to feel better when leaving the car in some places that I might find I can't avoid when "touring", also the OBD port blocker gives me something to get really angry about when I service the car!

Can't argue with that! I can understand the justification of simply "It makes me feel safer", by that logic go right ahead! I'm absolutely paranoid about locking my car. I must press it 3 - 4 times and watch it flash, go inside and lock my door then press it once more just to make certain it's locked. If I had an S4 I'd probably be spying on it to check it's safe 24/7.

@SeanTFSI , as by your own admission, you're " absolutely paranoid " obout locking your car, make sure you're not inadvertantly disabling the dead locks by repeated pressing of the remote button - a second press of the lock button within a certain time after locking the car will release the deadlocks.

Well fortunately my doors are broke anyway so not even me is getting in! That's something I'll have to be more careful for moving forward, I never actually knew that!

Advanced key and GAP insurance - a great combination :)

Also, those who want to steal wouldn’t care whether you have an advanced key or not. They are there to do their ‘job’ and will do it no matter what. Other than that we live in a world full of ‘lunatics’ and ‘lone wolfs’ so, chilax!!!

I activated the lock beep on my S4 via VCDS a while ago so, have some peace of mind that the car is locked and therefore don’t have to press it 3/4 times. If someone tries to steal it then it’s my bad luck. I have both the insurances on the car and that’s all I can do.

While stopping at a traffic light I make sure there is enough distance between me and the car in front just in case unless it is at a place where you can’t overtake from either sides and if so again, my bad luck!

Do you mean in case someone tries to steal your car while you're driving it?! I do NOT like the thought of that.

Not so much worried about when I am driving unless off course stealers are driving a GTR . But it can happen at a traffic light who knows!

Yeah, sorry I live in an area where "driving" is actually "stopping". I'm one to keep queues to a minimum and don't really leave much space but my car and I'm sure yours too has that autolocking feature for the outside so I trust that's enough to give me space to escape
