Can't seem to find the thread but 5 months into ownership with almost every other day washes, the rust is starting to set in on my hubs. Saw a post before I got my car on here about how people were coating the hubs and painting it with hammerite (was it?)

Anyone done this and can point me in the right direction before we hit winter please.

There's been a lot of discussion about this ailment. I'm not sure this is the thread you had in mind, but there is a post with several related links about a third of the way down the first page.

Seems people see mixed results longer term with Hammerite, though I don't know that enough have reported back years down the road to update on how they're getting on. I bought some liquid rust remover-neutralizer and brake paint here in the US a couple weeks after buying my car but have not yet had a chance to address this, mostly due to laziness. I intend to remove the rotors from the car, so that's extra work.

Done Mine's 18 months ago with hammerite smooth they still look good

I used the POR15 as my thread linked above, over time it goes gold and I had loads of negative comments at AITP about it.

I’m going to blow the hubs dry on the RS3 to avoid painting hopefully.

I complained and they were painted as a ‘goodwill gesture’ and they have been perfect since. The car was only 3/4 months old at the time and is now a year old.

They done a very good job. I couldn’t have done it better myself.

I'm planning a switch to red callipers, so will buy some hammerite and hopefully they're not too bad that I can't get what's there now off with some wire wool, do the hubs, do my callipers and then coat/seal my alloys all in time for winter.

Ideally do the hubs when you get the car, the silver finish is primer, intended to protect the hub in storage. I did mine when new with Hammerite and three years later they were still perfect.

Don't wait until they go rusty (as they surely will) before you paint them. Be proactive not reactive.

I did mine about 7 months ago with hammerite smooth silver - still good now. Mine had just started to go rusty so quick wire brush, clean with brake cleaner etc / allow to dry then applied with a few sponge tipped arty / craft brushes - dried to a nice finish. I did my calipers at the same time with the same method and they still look great now again 7 months later. As long as you take your time the results are very good!

I’ll 2nd this.... wheel off, 2 mins with a wire brush and paint with Hammerite. Easiest, cheapest, best result mod you can do in my opinion.

Done mine 18montgs ago and still look like new.

Right, another on the list for when it's detailed.

The rust on my hubs is nothing short of disgraceful. Is there an argument this is a warranty claim? This is a £50k car with hubs that would look out of place on a 30yr old Ford Granada.

There should be a £900 option for rust proof painted discs .

Has anyone painted the hub black? If so, got any pics?
I painted mine with black hammerite. Posted a half decent thread on it with a bunch of pictures. Have a quick search for it as I haven't got the link to hand.

Thanks. Just looked it up. I'm so lazy I'm not sure I can be bothered to do it myself!

Will see what Audi say. Do we reckon they would paint them under warranty?

Mine are getting to be that bad as well. Cooler weather is near... much to my wife's displeasure, I'm going to make this remediation a priority. She can't gripe too much... I got the garage organization project done well ahead of schedule.
