What do fellow members think about buying private when the price is around the 26/27k mark? Obviously you get a lot more car than going through a dealer, and age of car means there is a good 12months of Audi Warranty left - but it obviously carries more risk and its a lot of money.

The sensible amongst us would get it HPI Checked, and probably a vehicle inspection too. But - still given that, would you part with that much money to Joe Bloggs (or whatever he/she is called)???

I bought mine privately for over £20k and dint't have any issues with doing so but it was a particularly good deal.

I think it helps a lot if you like the bloke who owns the car and whether they seem honest and genuine. I didn't have a vehicle inspection done.

Lots of people get cars on finance so that obviously makes a garage more attractive even though they can usually get a far better deal by getting a personal loan.

It's unusual.

Do your research, so that includes outstanding finance check, VIN plate checks, possible AA check, etc. Car won't even have MOT details on DVLA at this point. Also ask yourself why the seller is selling privately? Nearly new cars in the right specification are still the bread and butter of motor trade, so unless the seller has lost their licence or is moving abroad why aren't they trading in?

This is an interesting one, as I'm looking to sell my S5, and it's around the £30k mark.

Don't think I have much hope selling it privately, so looking to get a garage to sell it for me at a slightly higher cost that will offset the fee.

Thing is, the car is very low mileage, driven from new by only me and has over 16months main dealer warranty left. Seems daft paying an extra £££ more just to buy it from a garage rather than me, but I guess it's piece of mind....

Quite possibly because they will make more money selling it privately than trading it in, which means they are then in a better financial situation to negotiate a deal on their next car.

As for the original question, I would go over every piece of information I could lay my hands on with a fine tooth comb, contact Audi to get info on past history of the car, is it known for constantly being back for repair work (possible the seller wants rid of it before warranty ends and it becomes their problem to pay for repairs), is they any outstanding finance on the car, full HPI, RAC / AA inspection, possibly pay for both for double piece of mind.

The finance thing is a BIG thing to check!! As if the car has £15k finance on it and you pay the guy £20k and he doesn't pay the finance company then they have the legal right to take the car back and leave you with nothing!! If there is ANY finance on the car, even if it's only £5, tell the seller you will pay the finance company in full what is owed and whatever is left from the agreed sale price you will pay to him.

For example, if the deal is done for £25k and there is £15k finance on the car, you pay the finance company £15k directly and get confirmation IN WRITING that it's all been cleared then you give the guy the other £10k via bank transfer or the likes. NEVER, EVER trust anyone who says "pay me the full amount and I'll clear the finance in the next 2 days". If they don't clear it then it becomes your problem as the loan is secured against the car!

You could always insist after you've done the basics checks that any deal is subject to an inspection at the main dealer along the lines of a pre-warranty check (at your cost of course). If that gets knocked back by the seller you know something is up.

If Audi finds anything wrong then they can repair under its existing warranty.

If there's something that's not covered, then you can negotiate or walk.

Cheers,

Ben

Sorry to drag this up, but I am in the same situation, what did you do in the end and to what (if any) benefit?

It's up for sale at a local garage as part of a sale or return.

No inquiries yet...

How long as it been up?

Mine is in negative equity so an extra few grand would be brilliant, but Audi are offering me more to px than we buy any car, I just don't know if someone would buy it private and trust finance to be paid off... which of course it would!

Will be two weeks tomorrow.
Bit peeved actually as they haven't even put up pictures yet.

Think staff are on holiday and that, so really should have kept it and given it this weekend.

The idea was to just use my GF car and have one car, but struggling already, so don't think it will last long....!

I might put it on autotrader and sell it to a garage or something so that it is gone, I have a deal in place with Audi which is good, I just think private or different trader I can get a bit extra deposit for the RS3.

Good luck with yours mate!

I'm watching this thread with interest as I'm looking to sell my S4 October time this year

Try tootle, my 2012 S4 sold in less than 5 hours for about 3 k more than I was offered as a trade in.

Thanks mate, i'll look into it! Is it ok to sell with finance on? Smooth process?

Just put it up on there now so will see how that goes!

I think allot of people will take issue and/or knock it down a fair bit because of the outstanding finance (unless they don't know about it), I'm sure you'll sort it all but people are often concerned about potential repossession especially if they're paying upwards of 20k for a car. Is there any means by which you could pay the remainder off? Could even loan the remaining amount from a bank or somewhere then pay monthly like it is now just to make the buyers choice easier.

Fingers crossed for you pal! Will be good to know, read good reviews on the process, but mixed things on price compared to WBAC

Cheers for that mate, I think this is predominantly dealers so it shouldn't be much of an issue, I have drafted a contract for a private sale, which basically says upon clearance of funds to my bank the car is the new owners and I shall be liable for all outstanding finance, albeit the finance will be paid there and then with them.

WBAC came in at more than 3k less than the offer I accepted via tootle.
One thing I will say is that, luckily for me, my S4 was well spec'd and maintained with all of the "must have options" so the dealer who bought it knew that he would be able to shift it pretty quick (and he did)
I also think that the supercharged S4 appears to have developed a bit of a cult following which means that the good ones will sell fast making them quite attractive to certain specialist audi dealers.

Well fingers crossed my S5 sells the same when I put it on there, it is a pretty decent spec and the black edition. Never know though eh. If I can get an extra £2k I will be happy.

So the lowest I will accept is £28.5k.

Got one offer this morning for £26,250...

Think that's called chancing your arm, considering there isn't a single S5 my age and mileage and spec under £32k!

What age, spec and miles is yours mate? have you got a WBAC quote?
Sounds like mine could be similar.

65 plate
14k miles
Black edition
Sepang Blue
Tech pack
Folding mirrors

WBAC are about £27k, so still no good.

If the garage doesn't get any interest by next week and I get no decent offers, I think I'll just keep it till my deal is up in November and just hand it back...seems like they are depreciating faster than Audi realised, as my GFV was set on me doing 20k miles by now!

That's not to bad, mine is:
10k miles
16 Plate
Black Edition
Brilliant Black
Tech Pack

WBAC £28.3k I want to try and get £30k - main reason is the release of the new model I think mate.

Not just that, but the level of discount you can already achieve on the B9 is ridiculous. Completely ruining the used car market for short term sales.

I think they know the finance bubble is about to burst so trying to maximise sales before it does....

I'd deffo buy privately at the £25k - £30k price range, especially if warranty was still on the car.
The price would need to be right though, especially when I was looking for my current car, as private sales were £500 less than main dealer.
Difference being the main dealer was offering a 2 year warranty on used at that time so it made sense to go that way.

A genuine 12 month warranty extension is worth around a grand, anyone selling privately needs to be around £2k under forecourt price to attract buyers (£1k for warranty, £500 for any prep work to get the car tip top, tyres etc)
