OK bear with me , i know this has been covered a dozen times already but i haven't found my symptoms elsewhere on the forums.
2011 S3 58k miles, all oil services up to date.
I have a whine from the rear, its a mid range octave sort of hum.
It comes in at 35mph and fades out by 45, it comes in again at 70 mph has gone by 80mph and doesnt come back up to the redline in 6th.
strange thing is the pitch doesnt change with speed and if it comes in at 70mph, gentle acceleration stops it like flicking a switch.
It doesnt change on cornering, it doesnt vibrate like tires and doesnt change on ruff smooth or concrete surfaces.

I have read that pulling the Haldex controller fuse might be a pointer, pulling the hand bake on a couple of clicks disengages the 4WD ? Fuel pumps can hum but wouldn't that be constant all speeds ?
Diff oil is not a service item ?

Its been doing it now for 6k miles and has not got any worse. I am pretty deaf having spent 40 years Ducati motorbikes but this is a smooth hum that drives me mad at bang on motorway speed.

Thoughts ?
Cheers
Paddy

Haldex was done at 50k and this started about 3-4k later.

well i will have to try another set anyway now, will be interesting to see what the others are like once they are off the wheels. You just never know do you, cant believe the speeds i was doing on these on the motorway last night... Sure its not the whine though.

Try changing haldex oil and filter

Agree. I had a whine from the rear diff area that came in at about 70 mph and went away at just under 80 mph. Also had a " grumble" from
the Haldex unit when turning tight. Changed the Haldex oil and the filter (which was filthy) at the weekend and seems to have cured
both noises.

Is it really your Birthday :yellowrs4: ?

all the best and i will book it in for another haldex change and filter, cheap if it fixes the problem.....:expressionless:

It is unfortunately. Thanks anyway. When you get to my age you try to forget such things :whistle2:. Good luck. I wish I'd
tried the cheap fix first. I went out and bought a second hand controller, and another diff.:concern:

Ha ha 58 for me but who's counting. Guessed you would be near me with a 240z in your profile, i had to settle for an MGB GT in those days :)

Yes, that was in the pre kids days. Mates had MG's but I wanted something different. Complete rust bucket!! However, wish I'd kept it. I paid £2.5 K for it
would be worth a fortune now.

I had an MGC Gt in the early 70's, bought for £495 and sold for £700, prices had just started to rise then.

Ha ha by the time i got my BGT it was 1980 and the MGC was way out of my price range. Up till then i had a Ford corsair with a 1500cc lump and a bench seat it was C reg 1963 but my BGT was cutting edge being E reg 1967 :)

Bought my little 1275 Cooper S (in the signature) in 1978 for £180 !! Had it restored in 2007. Sold it in 2015............. Nice little investment:whistle2:
When you look back you see the opportunities that you've missed. I was offered a Sunbeam Tiger in the late 70's for £600 !! ....but said no.

I think its always been the same, i make my living now in the classic italian motorbike world. I remember a few years ago thinking £30k for a ducati 750 was a crazy amount then i saw one go at Bonhams this year for £130k !! hindsight and all that...

when i was a very young kid my uncle had a cooper s and he would take me to Goodwood in it where he would race it, then drive home in it again :)

It's all gone a bit silly. When I sold the Cooper S my son said "why would anybody pay that for a Mini !! You could buy a half decent Ferrari that sort of money". Italian motorbikes Ducati and Moto Guzzi always sound fantastic. There seems to be money in old stuff even a BSA Bantam that I started out on and bought for £50 are selling up to £5K now.
