Depends what gap you take out. You can get 'return to invoice' gap which will payout the full amount you paid for the car when it was brand new.

RTI is to cover the gap... That you owe on the car that's above what your insurance pays it tho though isn't it?

Otherwise everyone would be getting their cars nicked a week before lease end ?

That's called fraud.....

Gap does indeed cover the difference between what the insurance pays out, and what you paid for the car when new.

Sorry to hear about your ordeal mate. These people are vermin, and should be expunged as such. Likelihood is you probably won't get your car back, as police resources are so low right now.

With regards to to what the police do, it can be very limited.

Officer numbers are incredibly low and it is unlikely that swarms of officers would be out looking for the car as forces can be carrying hundreds of live calls for service at anyone time.

In this type of event the thieves know what they are doing. They will be wearing gloves, so no fingerprints, hooded up so if in the event someone may have CCTV they won't be seen.

A false number plate will be on the car in a matter of minutes, so it won't be picked up on ANPR cameras.

It is unlikely in these incidents to ever catch who is responsible.

The car is probably stolen to order and will end up in a chop shop and stripped within a day or shipped off abroad in containers.

The main thing is the original poster is safe.

Ultimately the last thing these thieves want is to be caught.

Home security is of importance CCTV, lighting, steering locks to act as a deterrent to make it to risky to do.

However, if ever faced with this situation simply hand the cars over and do not chase. Your life is more important than a car.

You've hit the nail on the head there. About time HMRC and Trading Standards got on the case regarding these illegal and illicit 'chop shops' which are likely not paying tax and dealing in cash only, laundering money through a number of outfits. That is their job at the end of the day, and they have a bunch more resources than the police do right now.

Sorry to hear this, sad times but glad you and your family are safe. Afraid CCTV won't stop this sort of thing. My friend had his 6 month old Golf R stolen off his drive last week. 4 men broke into his house through the back door, took the keys, pushed it off the drive then drove it off. Car used to get to his house was on cloned plates. All this on CCTV and of no use in preventing the theft. However the CCTV proved it was a real crime as he was questioned as to whether it was an inside job.

It's happening all over the country, and has been happening for quite a while. There's a crime ring operating, but clearly our authorities don't give a **** about catching them. Probably because they get more income to the treasury through the taxed IPT when it goes up as a % of increased premiums.

Ok sorry to derail the stolen thread with Gap ********! .. That's a double kick in the knackers then if it expired.. :( my understanding was always that Gap will top up the missing part to what you owe on finance. I'm still amazed it will pay out the fee for getting it back to new price. That is in the favor of the buyer and that just doesn't happen now a days

That's what I have, and it wasn't actually too much to procure.

Gutted for you OP :( Was it a 5 door or 3 door? Seems the 5 door's are more at risk I think?

Definitely worth getting GAP insurance, but just typical yours ran out only a matter of a few weeks ago.

To wade in on the key debate - mine are out of sight of windows etc, but easily to find once you're in the house. If someone breaks in wanting the car I'd rather them just take it than come upstairs looking for the keys.

Not trying to promote anything over hear and just trying to make it informative

I'm a software developer and working for TRACKER Network UK, they've got bunch of products which could help some of you guys from such incidents happening again...
I'm sure if you Google it you'll find more about it

One of our best products is called "Stolen Vehicle Recovery" or SVR which could track down your stolen vehicles and the technology isn't jammable or anything because it uses VHF technology and it's almost impossible to thiefs to get away

TRACKER is UKs number 1 so they know what they're doing guys

Again I'm NOT trying to sell anything over here, what I'm trying to do is let you guys know of such services that exists

Go and read more about it yourself
I was offered one of these from my company and I couldn't any happier and can track my car on my phone using the app that we have been developing in-house and me as one of the developers

Also my insurance has reduced by 300 quick which is a good thing

Cheers

Tracker is top notch, we find a lot of cars with them and most within hours of being stolen. However, even with my discount, it's still a lot of money

I should get my company to be one of the sponsors with some good discounts, but it's not in my hand to be honest as I'm just a developer over there LOL

May I ask how much does it work out for you if you don't mind?

If I'm correct Tracker is the only company which uses VHF, all the others use GSM and GPS therefore it would appear to be the superior product.

The VHF signal can be tracked underground and from within shipping containers.

That's great. When I did a quote with Churchill years ago, they actually quoted me more for having a tracker on my A3 at the time, LOL!

Another one fairly local to me. Sorry to hear it and I hope your family are ok.

Never made any difference to any of my policies tbh.
I would still recommend the tracker locate though as it could give you the chance to get the car back....thats if you want it back!

I am firmly in the camp of not wanting the car back (in the case of mass produced motors).
I am not sure whether a tracker would prevent somebody breaking in & taking the car which for me is the fundamental issue which unfortunately will now never cease. People without things will always be after other people's things.

Years ago theft was a much bigger problem (i.e. taking cars without keys) but the current security levels of machines have created a world of invading personal space and the potential conflict scenarios.............really difficult balance to make and there is no right answer. Perhaps we will eventually follow a Texas model whereby the home owner has all sorts of legal standing when it comes to challenging bad 'uns but that hasn't stopped theft in Texas either! If everybody bought a gun then bad people would buy bigger guns and so it continues.

Bad ***** happens to good people every day.

It all depends on the package, I think it was up to 10% off, but this was a couple of years ago when I last looked. Haven't decided whether or not to put anything on my S4, it's a 2010 model and not the most stolen

I'm firmly in the I would want it back camp.
Mainly because it would eat me up inside that some scroat had just taken my pride and joy to fund his lifestyle. Get a proper job, contribute to society in a positive way and earn the right to have something nice
It took me a long time to find my car and it's perfect to me and I don't want to have to start again and be punished by my insurance company for the next 3-5 years for what isn't my fault.

I'd be interested in this, using CobraTrak on the S3 and haven't been that impressed. The cost is absolutely horrific and I'm considering not having one on my next car and going for a better immobiliser instead.

I took out £20k 'complete vehicle replacement' GAP cover on mine. I got just over 10% off the car which made it about £28k receipt/invoice price. If my car were to go missing tomorrow I'd get the GAP £20k (max) plus what my normal insurance pay out (let's say a low £14k, so added together I'd have £34k to get another 3 door facelift S3 with the same spec as mine, without having to haggle on price.

If I had only done return to invoice, then I'd only have £28k to buy another car, so I'd have to haggle again.

Oh and with gap123 you don't have to buy the same car, so I could get a BMW for the £34k if I wanted to.

Same here, back to invoice is fine in some ways but if you get a good discount or the car goes up in price (as is the case with the S3 - it went up not long after I ordered mine) then you could still end up with a shortfall.

Vehicle replacement basically does just that, replaces your vehicle like for like. Not 100% how it would work if the model had been upgraded in the case of the PFL vs FL or say when the new A3/S3 comes out and the FL is no longer available.

If a new model were out now they would still pay to put me in the new model S3, as long as the £20k gap payout + £?? insurance payout took me to it. That's why I went with GAP123 as they will do that where other companies will not ;) Like I say you can also switch to another make entirely if you wish.

Just double check your policy, you can also get cover that will just pay the difference from what your insurance pays out and what you have left to pay on the finance. EG. You bought your car for £20k, after 18 months you owe £16k and the car goes missing, your normal insurance pays out £15k, then your gap will just pay the difference of £1k to pay off your finance. The good news is you'd have no finance left to pay, but also no money to buy your next one.

3 types of GAP:
1. Pay off finance.
2. Return to invoice.
3. Complete vehicle replacement.

Good thing is, if the car is burnt out or stolen, from what I remember - the insurance pay out as if the car was in pristine condition as there is no car for them to view. In the event of a write off, they're pretty critical about the condition of the car!

The Tracker locate is a great product imo.
You get the ability through the web browser to see where the car is at any time and it tracks all your journeys keeping a record of your mileage.
My partner uses the car through the week so it's out of my sight a lot, I can always find out where it is lol.
The new app is a nice addition, needs a little work, but it's nice to set up a quick geofence around the car and also check the crime stats where your about to park up.

How does vehicle replacement work with Finance?

Here you go mate.

Basically reads that you'd get what the car would cost to buy now, you'd then pay off the finance and have to order again I guess, hopefully get a good discount which means you'd have a decent deposit.

ALA GAP Insurance said:
What is Vehicle Replacement Plus GAP Insurance?
POLICY WORDINGPOLICY SUMMARY
A Vehicle Replacement Insurance policy will, in the event of a total loss (accident, theft fire or flood damage) pay the difference between the comprehensive insurer’s settlement and the cost of replacing your vehicle new for old (or with a vehicle of a similar age to the one originally bought, if it was not new at the time of purchase)* or the outstanding finance, whichever is higher at the time.

As well as depreciation, it could be that a vehicle matching the one you bought originally costs more – you might have had a discount which is no longer available or the manufacturer might have increased the cost following a change to the model.

With Vehicle Replacement GAP you are protecting against this possibility. Any settlement is paid directly to you, so if you have finance, this can be paid and anything remaining is yours to use as you wish. If you own the vehicle and have no finance, the full settlement is yours to use as you wish.
