Calling all TDI owners.

Evening all,

On the way from from work today I had a moment were I turned my music off. During this I noticed that when I depress the clutch I get a rattle from what sounds like the flywheel/clutch.

The sound it not noticeable from the outside but is from the inside. More noticeably from the passenger footwell (so bear the gearbox)

As mentioned on a previous thread the car has only done 8500 miles and I can't say i have noticed this noise on the one diesel I owned 3 years ago as I've owned so many petrols.

Can any diesel owners please check if this noise is noticeable in their cars so I can rule it out as a "normal" or non normal characteristic as we all know dealers use that buzz word for sounds.

Here's a link to the rattle. Excuse the creak. That's just my jeans on the leather seats.

Cheers
Finny

Doesn't sound right to me, not easy to pinpoint though without having had the experience/problem before.. get it into the dealer.

What a helpful reply!

Sorry, I can't help - best to get it checked as it will hopefully covered under warranty if it is a problem.

It's booked in on 14th August for a rear seat rattle so I'll get them to have a look at it and give them a copy of the video.

Funnily enough I've been out in the car this morning and it hasn't made the noise when cold and there's no noise when I rev the car in neutral so I don't think it,s the flywheeel. I did however hear it faintly when the car had warmed up.

Is rattle coming from the top right of the engine....where the turbo is ? My 150 Tdi has simililar rattle but only when its warmed up.

I read somewhere about the turbo actuator rods rattling.....but don't think its that. VAGs solution was to fit a clip to stop the vibration.

Audi dealer said they couldn't hear it....which probably means they know exactly what it is but don't want hassle of fixing it (paranoia I know).

I'd be interested to hear how you get on with this.

Mine is the complete opposite to that. It rattles in neutral with the clutch up and it's silent with the clutch pedal down. Rattle goes away after 20 mins of driving. Have had gearbox, clutch, dual mass flywheel and turbo replaced and it still does it....got bored taking it back and will get rid of it before the warranty runs out.
On the plus side, I've had zero dpf problems despite mainly doing short journeys to and from work.

Rich.

No the rattle appears to be coming from the passenger footwell. so definitely clutch/flywheel area. The rattle seems to be intermittent. Sometimes it just seems louder than others. Will keep you posted what Audi day on 14th.

That's a lot of major components change and to no avail. That's the thing that's baffling me. The noise happens when there's no load on the flywheel or clutch, the only pressures are on the clutch slave cylinder and clutch release bearing which would be flexing the clutch housing diaphragm

Bit of an update. Audi have dropped the gearbox and found it's the clutch release bearing. They're going to change it but not the clutch.

I thought they normally come as a kit and that it's better to be safe than sorry and replace the lot.
