Hi all,

Long time member but last few years not posted anything :frown new:

For the odd few that know me.... Yes i still own my B5 S4 (10/11 years now  :nogarors4: ) and still love it (not that i drive it much now due to lack of time and life in general :frown new: )

Anyways on to the topic in hand.....

B7 or B8... S Line version. TDi (would prefer 170 ish Bhp +).

I would like to know from the owners of these cars what would be the best one to go for, what to look out for and what to avoid. I am aware of the issues in the early (esp B6 2.o tdi) of the oil pump issues. I am still confused on what not to go for and what to go for with regards to this issue so any help would be very greatly appreciated. I have read a fair few of peoples comments with regards to this and done a few searches but being thick i'm still not sure....

Don't have a big budget £9k at an absolute push, afterall it will be my daily. I will be mapping it (as it will be rude not too !!)

Any of you well versed guys and gals on this topic i would love to hear from you on this topic please or if you could push me in the right direction. :tongueout:

Got the B7 2.0tdi BRD Quattro manual. While it's been reliable for the last 70k miles, I can't say I've enjoyed it massively. Its not a bad car. Its good at covering big disances, but not happy doing short town trips. Grip and handling are good but I feel the standard sline suspension is harsh. Brakes arent the best but do stop you. The 2.0tdi 170 engine needs to be really pushed due to the std engine map, dpf and emission controls strangling it. Think 3.0tdi is much better overall with very similar mpg. Now its hit 100k miles I'll be remapping it and maybe deleting a few things too... Should make it more fun.

Oh and mpg is pretty pants. about 40-44 on a run sitting in the 70s on the motorway. Round town looking at low 30s..

Thanks Tut_gareth. Now you got me thinking.... Thought the mpg would be better than that!!

Was considering the dpf removal especially whilst mappinng it.

Is the newer B8 a better option to go for? I take the engine has been revised a fair bit? !

Thinking out loud would the 140 bhp be the better one to go for?

Don't mind the firmer suspension either if it holds the road well.

I thought mpg would be better too!! The non quattro's fair a bit better. But I can't live without quattro!
Dpf removal is deffo on the list for me along with egr and a remap.
The 140 is probably better for tuning as it's got the more common Bosch ecu. Though darkside developments have a good selection for the siemens ppd's too.

I'd still go 3.0 over 2.0.

As for the B8 I've driven a few and they are nice. Probably worth trying both before you decide.

Mmm think i need to get test driving the B7 & B8, looking at a couple of them this coming week (both the 140 & 170 bhp) providing work doesn't get in the way.

Not sure about the 3.0l though it has crossed my mind. Heard you have to be careful with the timing chain and the injectors (which cost apparently around £1500 to replace - not sure if that is accurate). I know all cars have their little issues with one thing and another but i just don't want to land myself with a horrendous bill straight away !!

Tut_gareth... why did you go for the B7 and not the B8 then?

Read lots to about 3.0tdi woes but know a few people with that haven't had any of them.. and tbh I've not had any of the issues that the BRD is said to suffer from either... touch wood!!. If your mechanically inclined then thing are always cheaper to fix yourself.. that what I keep saying to myself hehe.

I've had mine for 5 years now and I got the b7 because my budget was 12k at the time which didn't stretch into decent B8 territory.
I'll probaly get and A6 it when this one hits 150kmiles.

Take a 3.0 out after trying a 2.0 just to experience one before you commit.

Thanks tut_gareth.... will look for 3.0 now and see what that is like and compare it to the 2.0

Been looking online a lot and i can't believe the price differences for same model with similar age and mileage, does make me wonder why !!
